I’m Not Your Servant
Xavier’s lips twitched as the men took a step toward him. He cast them a glance and with just a look from him, they froze in their places, their feet coming to a stop at the look he passed them.
“What are you doing? I said take him out.”
Xavier raised his hand. “I’ll go out by myself. See you at home.”
She brought out her tongue from her mouth, mocking him with her expression. “You might not even see me.”
Passing her a last glance, he walked out of her office, his footsteps loud and fast. Halfway to the elevator, he stopped turning around to walk back into her office, the security guards not daring to stop him.
Elaine, who had slumped on the couch in her office, immediately sprang up, staring at him in surprise. Didn’t he leave? Why was he back again? She straightened her back.
“If my security officers are too small to chase you out, I’m afraid I’ll have to get the police involved.” She threatened.
Xavier walked deeper into the room until he was standing before her again. “You don’t need to do that.”
“What?”
“Fine. I agree with whatever bullshit you’re pulling.”
“I don’t understand what you’re saying. Be specific please, what exactly are you agreeing to?”
“To let you do whatever you want. You can resume your work and do whatever the fuck is it that you want.”
Her eyes sparkled immediately. “Really? You’re not joking?”
“Do I look like I am?”
She cleared her throat, wrapping her fingers together at her back and walking to her table. “That’s good then. If you agree, it would save us the fight.”
“Right. But on one condition.”
She swiveled around. What was it that he wanted? She almost face-palmed herself. The man was the hardest to deal with, he could give anyone a headache just by letting a word out of his lips. She’d managed to get him to agree and now he wanted something in return?
“What do you want? It better be something I can stand.”
“It’s simple. You’ll close two hours early and will not overwork yourself.”
She looked at him, waiting for him to continue but he didn’t.
“Just that?”
“Just that.”
“Deal. I’ll close two hours early.”
Xavier nodded, staring at the security men behind him. “Can they leave now?”
Elaine cleared her throat. “Leave us.” The men lowered their heads and retreated out of the office.
Xavier stepped closer, settling on the chair astride her and crossing his legs together.
“You can continue your work. I won’t bother you.”
Elaine nodded, flipping a file on her desk open while trying her best not to look at the man astride her who was continuously staring at her. Too blinded by rage, she’d failed to admire the man’s looks when he walked in.
Just like always, he was breathtaking, in his white shirt and black pants and with the first three buttons of his shirt unbuttoned. She could imagine her employees swooning at the sight of him. He was always stealing the show here and there with those features of his that made her want to nod to his every word every single time. Wasn’t he doing too little to charm her yet she was charmed?
“It’s okay to stare, you know,” Xavier spoke.
“Ehh?”
“Your files are facing upside down.”
Her eyes immediately widened as they fell on the files before her. True to his words, the file she was staring at was facing upside down and the words were barely readable to her.
Her cheeks reddened, a blush creeping up her face.
“Whatever. Don’t you have a company to run? What are you doing here?”
“Unlike a certain someone, I have a spouse to take. More important.” He’d shown up in her office with the aim of taming her and forcing her back home but he ended up being the one who was tamed instead. His little wife turned him speechless. Right. He’d been speechless at her outburst, totally became immobile when she didn’t let him speak and scolded him for trying to run her life.
“You should go back to your own place of work and leave me to mine.”
“So you can keep reading files upside down while thinking of me?”
She flushed. “I wasn’t thinking of you.”
“The expression on your face says otherwise. Anyway dear wife, shouldn’t you offer your guest a cup of coffee? What would people say when word gets out? You treat your guests so badly.”
“If you wanted coffee, you could’ve just asked. I’m not scared of what people say.”
Elaine rose from her chair and walked toward the coffee maker, abiding by his request and making him a cup of coffee, her back facing him. Once it was ready, she brought it to him, placing it on the table. “Here is your coffee, sire.”
“Good madam, my phone is on the couch. Will you help me get it?”
She groaned. Was this a punishment for fighting with him? Turning her into a servant? She dragged her legs to the couch, retrieved his phone, and walked back to place it before him. How did it even get to the couch?
“Thank you.”
“I’m not your servant. How did it even get to the couch?”
“I threw it there.”
Her head snapped to him. “You threw it there just to have me get it for you?”
He nodded with a smirk on his lips. Elaine’s fist tightened the urge to wipe the smirk off his face with a slap of hers surfacing. Mounting a ‘bastard’ at him, she returned to her seat.
Xavier’s hands shot out to get the box of cookies on the table, his eyes examining the softbox.
“Where is this flimsy thing from?” He asked.
“Beth made it herself and besides, it’s not flimsy. It’s delicious. Hand it over if you’re not interested.”
She stretched out her hand to retrieve the box but Xavier did something she didn’t expect. Her eyes widened as he matched the waste bin close to him which opened and threw the box of cookies in it just in time for Beth to walk into the office to watch the scene.
She froze. Elaine stood up, rushing to the side, staring at the bin with teary eyes. “Xavier, what did you do?” She groaned in anger.
“You shouldn’t eat things from other people that aren’t authorized by the government.” Glaring at Beth, he spoke. “Knocking is simple etiquette.”
With anger brewing in her, she walked closer, dropping the files she brought on the table. “I knocked. Maybe you walk with your ears.”
At that, she stormed out of the office, her hatred for the man spreading all over.
Elaine passed him a death glare. “Why did you do that?” She spent hours making it.” She bent to pick the box of cookies from the bin. Luckily, it was empty before the box.
“What are you doing?” He grabbed her arm but she pulled it away from him.
“Let go of me. You don’t know how much effort is in this. I loved it too. Why did you speak that way to her? She did nothing to you.”
“What? She fed you with ideas and taught you how to be stubborn.”
