The Date
In the evening, just as they’d both planned, Elaine and Xavier arrived at a fancy restaurant in the evening. Elaine peeled Xavier’s hand off her thighs when the car finally stopped in front of the restaurant. She held onto the new flowers that he got her while he took off her seatbelt and asked her to stay still. What was with Xavier and the flowers these days?
If he gets used to giving her flowers, it would be done for her then because he wouldn’t stop until she gets flowers every single day. She watched with a smile settled on her lips as Xavier got out of the car, and walked around to the front passenger side where she sat. Like the gentleman that he wasn’t really, he opened the door and stretched his hand forward for her to take.
Letting out a giggle, she took his hand and he helped her out of the car. “So much for being a gentleman, huh?”
“Anything for you baby.”
Hand in hand, they began to make their way into the fancy restaurant, one that Elaine knew was top-notch and expensive in the city. They were like newly wedded couples as they strode in, their hands locked together.
He led her to the reserved seat for them and dragged out a seat for her. “Everyone here now thinks you’re a gentleman. They’re going to be talking about it all week.”
“That’s why I suggested that we book the whole place.” But she’d refused. She preferred having dinner with people around, perhaps.
“And we can’t just be like normal couples? Normal couples have dinner with everyone around. We shouldn’t have to be so different.”
“Normal couples have normal money.”
“Forget it. Why don’t we talk about the scenario of this place instead? I haven’t been here before.” She looked around the place and couldn’t help but want to give it a five-star rating even without tasting their food. The interiors alone were enough to steal her heart. It was as they say. First impressions are everything.
Soon, a waitress dressed in a red body con skirt and white shirt stepped up to them and placed the menu on the table. “Please place your order, sir, ma’am.”
Xavier gestured for Elaine to place an order for the both of them. She picked up the menu and began looking through it, her eyes scanning the foods that they had.
“What are you having?” She raised her head to ask her husband.
“Anything that you’re having.”
“Fine then.” She placed her order and watched as the waitress walked out on them to go do their bidding. “Their food is going to be as good as the place.”
“You seem confident.”
Before Elaine could reply to her husband, a gasp from behind her caused her to pause. The gasp was followed by a shriek of surprise before footsteps hurriedly walked in their direction. She swiveled around, her eyes falling on the women who made their way toward them, their heels almost impossibly too hard for them.
“Oh my, it’s you, Elaine. It’s been so long.”
“Margaret,” she let out a lazy acknowledgment.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you here. How have you been, dear.”
“I’ve been superb.” Her eyes darted to the woman beside Margaret who hadn’t stopped staring at Xavier. And it wasn’t the normal stare. She was openly flirting with another woman’s husband.
“I haven’t introduced you both.” Margaret pulled her friend closer. “This is Elaine, my brother’s wife. Elaine; this is Arla, my friend and Xavier’s favorite ex-girlfriend.”
“You flatter me,” Arla smacked Margi on her arms lightly.
“Ex?” Elaine couldn’t help but exclaim. When was she ever going to stop meeting Xavier’s exes randomly? Just how many exes did he have in the past? Her man was something else.
“Yes, Ex. We broke up a year and six months ago.”
It was after then that Xavier and Elaine met. Elaine couldn’t help the urge to scrutinize the woman. The woman was nothing like her. Tall, confident, redheaded, older, and most importantly, she was gorgeous as fuck. Her dark brown lipstick was the perfect shade that fitted her most and her hair was long and silky that Elaine almost touched hers for comparison. She looked out of a vogue magazine.
It was something about Xavier’s exes. They were gorgeous as hell. In such a way that would make anyone wonder what sane man would break up with them.
“Oh, nice meeting you then.” Definitely not nice.
“If you don’t mind, we’d love to sit with you both and you know, talk. I haven’t talked with Xavier for like so many months now.”
Before she could nod her head and say that she in fact did mind them joining as they were on a date and wanted their time to themselves, Arla and Margaret both pulled a chair out from the other tables and set them on each side, sitting beside the couple.
“Xavier, you didn’t bother to give me a call. Anyway, congratulations on your wedding.”
“Thank you. If that’s all you have to say, I suggest that you leave. My wife and I were busy together.” Elaine had asked him not to make a scene nor get angry or ruin their date and it was the only thought that was keeping him from yelling at the security men to throw them out of their table.
They needed to thank their stars for the promise he made to his wife.
“Don’t be so harsh. We had quite a good history, didn’t we? Marriage shouldn’t stop it. You didn’t hear that I got selected for this year’s fashion show. That means I’m gaining more fame as usual.”
“Good for you.” He looked around the restaurant. Why the fuck was the waitress taking heaven’s eternity to bring in their order. He was becoming impatient as fuck.
“Margi, do you remember the time years ago when Xavier came to my workplace and begged for my forgiveness?” Arla’s perfectly white teeth were on display. “We used to be so much in love.”
“Of course. He was madly in love with you. Even now, I’ve never seen Xavier so in love. That time with you was magical.”
That was the end of it that Elaine could take. Plus the waitress was taking longer than expected. Perhaps she got confused as they were now four instead of two? She grabbed her bag from the table and leaned into Xavier’s ears. “I have to pee. I’ll be right back.”
He shook his head. “You can’t get out of my sight.”
“Just give me five.”
This time not waiting for his reply, she stood up from the chair, and smiled at her husband’s ex-girlfriend and sister before making her way to the restroom, her footsteps increasing when she got away from them.
As she got to the basin in the powder room, the first thing that she did was splash water on her face and stare at herself in the mirror. Arla better be the last ex of Xavier that she meets because if she meets with another ex of Xavier’s she would be forced to get a full list. Because why were they so fucking much?
“He was one hell of a playboy, wasn’t he? Because tell me why everyone is on the edge with him. He’s dated half the models in this city.”
Arla better be the last because Xavier would get a lot of explanation to do if there were others.
She brought out her foundation from her brand new handbag, one that Xavier had gifted, and began to apply it to her face just in time for the door of the restroom to push open, and to her surprise, Arla walked in.
Elaine didn’t need to act like she was fine with her around and she just ignored her and continued applying her foundation.
“Nice foundation,” Arla began. “I should get this brand.”
“Thank you.”
Arla stood before the basin and just like Elaine, she began applying a small touch to her makeup and lips stick. “I didn’t think that Xavier would get married one day.” She stared at the large expensive stone on Elaine’s finger. “That’s a nice ring you have.”
“Thank you. He got it for our wedding.”
“I can tell. That’s what happens when a man like him settles. You’re one lucky girl though. He’ll usually go for better-looking girls, not someone so…” she looked Elaine over. “I don’t know if simple is the right word.”
