Why Are You Sending Me Away

Elaine had no understanding of all that had occurred a while ago. Even as Ria’s truck disappeared into thin air, she still stood in the same position, her eyes on the bundle of dollar notes that lay pimply in her hand. How much was it? It looked 10k or 15k but that wasn’t what bothered her. It was the fact that Ria had to return it without saying something like she’d expected even after her words and lecture the other day.

She’d expected Ria to stop acting like a kid and reconcile with her. When she’d seen her just a while ago at her office, she’d felt her heart lift in joy and she’d expected good words to let out from her mouth.

Sighing, Elaine turned around and began to make her way back into the company, ignoring the weird stares of her employees who’d seen her chasing after Ria. She made her way into her private elevator and soon got to the first floor, her eyes immediately catching sight of Beth pacing around the hallway.

“What the hell is that money? Did you make a withdrawal?” She asked, facing toward Elaine at the sight.

“It’s from Ria. She said that she came here to repay her debts.”

“You expected something else?” Beth asked when she saw the expression on her face, the frown that settled deep on her forehead.

“I expected something else. I fucking poured out my heart to her that day at the beach and…and I’m way more than disappointed seeing that she took none of that into her head.”

Beth sighed and rolled her eyes. “You should’ve known Ria by now. That girl will never repent, it’s not an unknown fact. Do you not see how she looks like her whole life’s energy is vested in envying others? She’s never going to change.”

“Well, it seems like I just learned that. I tried my best to bring her back on track. It’s such a shame.” It was a last trial to make her sister see reason with her. But now that she saw no reason and continued bitching around, she couldn’t help but give up on her. After all, she had better things to do than chasing after a stray cat, one that was determined to stay in the rain.

Glaring at the money in her hands, she shoved them into Beth’s arms and wiped her palms. “You can share that amongst the employees. Tell them it’s a bonus from me. I don’t need it.”

“Accept our thanks,” Beth lowered her head.

“It’s no big deal.”

Scratching the back of her neck, she walked back into her office.

“What took so long? What’s wrong?” Xavier rose from the couch he’d been sitting on, scrolling on his phone and he strode toward her and pulled her into his embrace. “What made you so sad? Did she say something mean to you?”

Elaine only just locked her arms around him and pushed her chest into his, wanting to be one with the only person who could give her so much peace. She laid her head on his chest and breathed in his scent. She shook her head as a reply to his question.

“Then what’s wrong? Tell me what she did, doll?”

“What will you do?” She managed.

“You don’t want to know. I’ve been lenient on her all this while. But if she dares try something stupid again, I won’t hesitate to write her away.”

A smile rose Elaine’s lips and she pushed away from the man, smacking his arms lightly. “Nothing like that is going to happen. We just had small talks.”

“What was she here for?”

She shrugged and began walking back to her table. “To pay off her debt. 15k. I didn’t ask for it but as always, she wouldn’t listen and insisted on paying me back. She didn’t even say a word about what I told her the other day.”

“Now, I’ve told you to give up on her.” He followed after her. “She’s a fucking lost cause. Don’t stress over her.”

“I won’t anymore. Can we just eat the cookies Mother made, already? I’m starving.” She grabbed the box of cookies that she’d been given back at the Rock mansion. She had plans to bring it home to him but since he’d insisted not to leave for his workplace and go home with her when it was close time, they’d better consume it here.

She placed it before them on the table but just as she picked up a cookie and brought it to her lips, she saw Xavier push a paper between them on the table.

“What is this?” She gazed at it with a frown on her face.

“A ticket abroad.”

Her eyes widened.

“To where?”

“Paris. For a vacation. You’d love that, right?”

She squealed as she picked up the paper, shot out of the chair, and laughed in excitement. How on earth did he know that she needed a vacation so desperately? She needed to get away from everything that had been going on for the past weeks, including work and Paris was just the perfect place.

“When are we leaving?”

“Nah, I’m not coming with you.”

Her smile immediately disappeared as quickly as it had appeared and she found herself sitting back down on her chair. “What do you mean? I’m not going anywhere alone.”

“You have Beth. Rigel too would come with you for protection.”

“But why can’t you come? I’m not leaving without you?” She argued. As she gazed into her husband’s eyes, she felt like something was wrong. There was something that he was keeping away from her. What was it?

“Just do as I say and leave the city for a while, Elaine. I’ll follow after you before you know it. You’ll be leaving tomorrow,” he announced, his voice laced with absoluteness, one that left no room for arguments.

“What the hell? Why all of a sudden are you sending me away? What’s going on?”

“I have unfinished business here and if I’m not done with it, you can’t return.”
