Back At The City

It was just as if things were planned because as soon as the call with Emily ended, her phone began blaring again almost immediately and this time, it was their mother. Elaine’s eyes widened as she stared at the caller ID, blood draining from her body with each second that passed with the phone blaring in her hand.

Before the call could end, she tapped on the green button, and with shaky hands, she brought the phone forward and apple into it. Fuck, she’s never been so nervous to answer a phone call before. One from her mother after just hearing that her father was back in the city.

Somehow, she felt like something was wrong back at home. “Mother?”

Soon enough, a ruffling sound reverberated from the other line followed by a muffled scream that caused her to rise from the bed, her eyes widening in panic. “Mother, are you okay? Mother, say something.”

“Elaine… you have to help. He’s going to kill me,” she heard the shaky whisper from her mother and her heartbeat immediately increased. “He’s here.”

“Father?”

“Yes, Elaine,” the older woman cried. “He’s coming closer to the kitchen. He has a knife. Ahhh.” After the scream from the woman, the line went off leaving Elaine frozen and confused.

“Mother? Mother?” She called severally and groaned in frustration, tears beginning to stream down her cheek. She needed to save her mother. Nothing must happen to the woman who was her mother and so, she stormed out of the room, racing to the living room where Beth sat and Rigel stood, his left hand on his hip while he spoke to the phone.

“I need to leave this place immediately,” she announced.

“What is going on?” It was from Beth.

“Mother is in danger. He’s back in the city.”

“What?”

She blinked back the tears that threatened to fall. “Let’s just go. It is urgent.” Without waiting for them to say anything, she began to race toward the door of the penthouse but before she could get more than a few meters away, Rigel’s hands came around her arms and pulled her backward.

“It’s unsafe and against the boss’s order.”

“My mother is in fucking danger,” she yelled. “What your boss says or wants doesn’t matter to me at the moment. Wait.” She paused and it was as if a bulb just lit up in her head. “Is this the reason I was sent here? Y’all knew he’s in the city ever since? Fucking answer me.”

“I’m sorry, it was the boss’s order.”

How pissing it was to Elaine to keep hearing about Xavier’s order over and over again. She threw her head backward and combed her fingers through her hair in frustration. She was even more than frustrated.

“I can’t believe this. I’ve been here all the while and my family is in danger? Do you know what that means?”

“The boss has been searching for him. Be rest assured that he’ll get to him on time. I have a duty to protect you from him this time.”

“Take me back home,” she deadpanned, not leaving any room for opposition.

“I’m sorry.”

“I asked you to fucking take me back home, didn’t you hear me? Xavier asked you to do anything I said, didn’t he? Now I’m asking that you take me back home this instant.” Her voice was absolute. “I don’t want to hear any excuses.”

Seeing how angry and stressed her friend was for the first time in a long while, Beth stepped in between them and held Elaine to herself, patting her shoulders and arms. “Breathe, Elaine. Breathe.”

“I don’t want to.” Her tears began spilling. She was scared, so damn scared of the outcome of her father’s return. Last time, her baby was hurt. This time, it might be her mother or anyone else or even her husband for fucks sake. Surely she would finish the man off if she saw him first. She would make sure he dies for real this time. How dare he show his face to them after all that he did to her.

“Mr Romano is already on his way to put things back in place. We can’t disobey.”

“It’s an order from me, Rigel. I didn’t ask.”

After some hours, Elaine finally arrived back in the city with her friend. Her words previously had done the trick with Rigel and he’d immediately call for the private plane which came in a few minutes.

Getting into the car awaiting them, Elaine ignored her blaring phone and just kept her gaze on the road, her heart beating so fast at the thought of her mother being hurt. She’d tried to contact her sisters and the family’s servant but none of their numbers went through.

“You should pick up the call,” Beth advised from the side. “He’s not going to stop calling.”

“He has to. I don’t need him now.”

“You and I know that you do.”

She ignored the rest of Beth’s words and looked outside the window, her fingers tapping against the window in nervousness.

After what felt like forever, the car pulled over in front of the rock mansion and Elaine wasted no time in throwing herself out and racing into the mansion, pushing the security guards out of her way, overly desperate to get to the house immediately.

In her quest to get to the main door, she didn’t realize the man from the other side. It was only after they bumped into each other and after the strings of gunshots that slammed his body did she realized who she had on her arms and her eyes almost popped out of their sockets. The weight of the body sent her to the floor, the body of the man on top of hers.

She almost let out a scream of fear when a drop of blood from the man dropped on her face and streamed down her cheek. It was a depressing realization that the man was no other person than her very own father.
