Almost Death
“Did I just get stood up for the first time after I decided to return to work?” Elaine grumbled as she stared at her wristwatch, the time glaring back at her without any ounce of reluctance. And looked outside the glass window for the last time, her eyes scanning the surroundings for any trace of the man whom she’d arranged a meeting with and when she didn’t find him, she grabbed her bag and stood up down the chair, beginning to make her way out of the restaurant.
It had been three days since she resumed work again and she couldn’t help but admit that it was a good decision on her path, probably one of the best. Each time she spent in the company and in the presence of others caused her to forget whatever it was that had been bothering her. There were new stories, new gossip, and even a few new employees that she got to catch up with.
Unlike when she was alone by herself, the hours ran by quicker than expected and she soon realized that she was going to get out of her shell and be ill soon. Her company would be the right help center.
Elaine stormed out of the restaurant and looked to her left and right, waiting for a taxi to pull up in front of her. She’d agreed to set up a meeting with Fred only for him not to show up at the last minute. She’d spent the last hours thinking of excuses to come up with for her lack of appearance at the company and after finally getting the perfect alibi, he still didn’t show up.
Just then, her phone pinged, indicating that a text message had just come in. She brought the phone to her face and clicked on the message, realizing that it was Beth.
Beth: How was the meeting with Fred? Don’t fall in love with him, you know you’re still married. Just texting to remind you that.
She scoffed and without wasting another minute, typed back a message.
Elaine: You must be a joker for he’s nothing like my type.
She didn’t know what her type was except for the fact that it was Xavier. Only Xavier was capable of making her heart thump so loudly In her chest. There was no other person who could compete with him in her heart. It was too bad that they were getting a divorce.
Well, that was true. She’d sent a divorce paper to his mansion a few days ago but was yet to receive a copy that contained his signature. She was sure he would sign it soon and sever any ties that he had with her. And they would return to being strangers all over again.
Beth: Just saying. Your heart is crazy sometimes. I know that man is sexy but you’re married and you should keep your eyes away from the singles.”
Elaine: They’re humans. And besides, all we do is admire and compliment. Nothing more.
Their conversation continued. Deep in her conversation, she didn’t notice the white sedan that was speeding in her direction. She only realized when her body was suddenly pulled to the side, crashing into a hard surface and the white sedan brushed past the exact same spot she’d been standing and got lost in the busy road.
Elaine gasped, her breath increasing in sound and pace and she found her legs trembling with each second that passed. What had just happened? Did a car almost run her over? Feeling the hard surface on her face and the hand that wrapped around her back, she raised her head slowly to meet with glazing brown orbs.
The first word that rang in her mind when her eyes locked with the brown orbs was ‘Pretty.’
She pulled away from him immediately and stepped backward, maintaining the proper distance between them. She pushed a few strands of her hair behind her ears. “Th…thank you so much for that. I…I..”
“You should pay attention next time. There might not be anyone to come to your rescue next time.”
“Of course. I was just a bit distracted. I’m Elaine, Elaine Rock.” She decided to go with her maiden name. After all, she was a Romano no more and Xavier was soon going to sign the divorce papers and send them back to her. She knew that it would be the case soon.
The man took her outstretched hand in his and nodded. “George Mill. Nice meeting you.”
“Nice name. Thank you once again. Umm, would you love to have a meal with me? My treat. I mean, you help me, it’s only fair that I treat you to a meal.” She wouldn’t want to leave and start feeling guilty like she wasn’t supposed to get help from anyone for free. It was true though. These days, everyone helps each other just because of the benefit they can get from them.
“No bother. I’d have done it to anyone else?.”
“I’ll feel indebted for life. Please let me. We’ll be out in no time.”
After a few minutes of trying to convince the man to have a meal with her in the fancy restaurant that she’d just walked away from, he finally agreed and entered the restaurant with her.
“Did you come here for a date?” George inquired as she scanned the menu book, reading through what to order for them.
“Oh no. For business.”
“Gor stood up?”
“You’re right. How about you?”
“For business too. But unlike you, I didn’t get stood up.”
Elaine chuckled. “I get it.” She placed their orders and decided to have a little conversation with the man before the waiter came with their order. She was still shaken from what had happened a few seconds ago, and the thought of something happening to her if the man hadn’t shown up was scary as hell. Just treating him to dinner would not satiate the gratefulness that she felt.
She could treat him to a thousand dinners if he wanted.
As the second tickled by, a single thought settled in her mind. What would have happened if George hadn’t saved her on time? Who was behind the wheel of the white Sedan that had almost crushed her to death?
