The Day Of The Fashion Show

Finally, it was the day of the fashion show, the most awaited day in the city. It was the biggest fashion show that Elaine was organizing and also the most talked about in the city. She was more than prepared to get her show to become the talk of the city for the rest of the month.

“You have to put your best faces out there. If you want to climb to the top, you have to work hard for it,” Elaine lectured the runaway models behind the curtains of the main show and prepared each of them as they took their way to the runway.

“Put on a poker face, remember,” she continued. “Pretend like there is no one watching and make sure to kill every anxiety you have in you. If this show becomes a success, you all will be sought-after models, trust me.”

“Yes, ma'am,” they replied in unison.

She gestured at the first model in the line to make her way to the show. The girl fixed her expression and started the walk to the main show.

Elaine stared at the other models, male and female combined. Yes, males too. She'd signed the contract with Fred and so they’d collaborated and named the show with a mix of the company’s names.

After helping the next model to arrange his dress, she gestured for him to move.

To the next, she spoke. “Fix your face. That face would make it nowhere. You want to give them the hard stare that makes you come up as intimidating. I'm not a model but if I try to be one, you all are in trouble.”

And she wasn't bluffing. If she does try to be a model, she'll be the most sought-after as everyone would be unable to resist her charms then. She would dominate the industry and keep everyone on their toes.

Well, not now though. Maybe after she popped the baby out of her. She was starting to look twice her size.

“Yes ma'am.”

“Thank you. Please go.”

One after the other, she assisted in getting the models to be in their best state with poker faces.

“Elaine.”

A call from behind made her swivel around, her eyes sparking as they came in contact with the man who made his way toward her.

“Fred.”

Once he got to her, they engaged in a friendly hug. They'd become a bit of friends during the planning of the show. Fred was a total sweetheart. He was good at what he does and Elaine liked that about him.

“You look stunning.”

She blushed. She wore a red-sleeved dress embroidered in diamonds. It hugged her body and stopped after her ankles. Her employee, Joe, had made the dress and had offered adjustments when needed after the show got postponed and she added weight.

“You look good yourself.” He does look good in the blue suit that he wore.

“I can see the show is going very well. It's all thanks to your hard work.”

“Don't flatter me. Everyone is working hard for this. We're doing great.”

“That is for sure. I commend you.”

“You did a great job too. Everyone is satisfied.”

Before they could continue with their conversation, Elaine’s eyes caught sight of Beth walking toward them cladded in a cream-colored sleeveless gown. She held two drinks in her hands and when she got to Elaine, she handed one to her.

“Don't worry, it's nonalcoholic.”

“I can tell. How's everything going.”

“Perfectly. The models are simply the best. Although some are newbies, they're doing so well and I'm glad we picked them for the job.”

“I'm glad too.”

“Anyway, guess who's here.”

Fred stepped out when one of his business associates came up to him, leaving Elaine and Beth to themselves to engage in their conversation.

“Who?”

“Your husband. He's in there.”

Elaine’s eyes immediately popped wide. Xavier? Did he attend? She'd sulked when he told her that he wouldn't be able to make it to her fashion show of all days but after much persuading and kisses on his part, she'd agreed to let him be even if she got disheartened.

So it turned out that he was trying to surprise her. Letting out a squeak of excitement, she pushed the blue curtain aside and bit and accessed the show. Like Beth and Fred said, the show was going perfectly. The models were giving them the walk of the century and good lord, the chairs were filled. Everyone she invited made it to the show and they had their camera up while they nodded at each model that passed by.

She could tell that they were satisfied with the smile that settled on their lips and the way they diligently took videos of their favorite runway dresses. The place was beautifully designed as she wanted and only the sight of everything playing out almost made her let out the tears she'd been trying to hold.

It wasn't her fault that she cried for every little thing these days. Finally, she saw her husband amongst the crowd. He had his phone up, taking pictures and videos while ignoring the people who were also taking photos and videos of him. She flinched when he caught her staring at her and she quickly let go of the curtain, letting it hide her once more.

“You saw him, right?”

“I did.”

“Everything is going so well, Beth. I can't believe it.”

“Me too. Don't forget your promise.”

“What promise?”

“Promise that after the show, we'll party hard. Maybe not today but tomorrow or any other day in the week.”

“Of course. We’ll party hard. Every one of you is involved in the success of this show. I can already imagine.”

She was surely going to party hard after the success of her biggest project. Nothing was stopping that. Not after she’d made preparations for so many months. She planned to take her employees out to party all throughout the night.

“Your man is here.”
