Family’s Holiday Week

“Those are really pretty,” Helen complimented as her eyes fell on Elaine’s heels. Her eyes were fixated on them as they walked to the side of the mall. “Is that a red bottom?”

“Yes.”

“Newest edition. You're really doing your best at using Brother Xavier’s money. He must be really generous.”

Elaine laughed. “Of course, that's why he’s my husband.”

“You got married to him because of his money?”

“That is so not true. Connection included.”

Elaine watched as the fake smile that had been plastered on the girl’s face dropped all the way down. When she sees a bitch, of course, she’ll know them and this time, she wasn’t pretending to be nice to them. It never gets her anywhere after all.

“I should have gone home sooner and gotten together with him before you came into the picture. I know I'm a better choice than you, gold digger.”

Elaine continued picking up the items that caught her interest. Ignoring the girl who walked behind her like a lost puppy.

Helen continued, “But he should not worry, I'll be going back home soon and I'll rekindle our love again..”

“Rekindle?” Elaine raised a brow.

“You heard me right. Xavier has always been mine. We’d liked each other right from when we were kids and a little girl like you won't come between us.”

Right, a little girl. Helen looked slightly older than her, maybe a year or two older but whatever. Who talks about someone’s husband in such a way?

“Come between? He's my husband.”

“I met him first and I know that he loved me first.”

“Well, good luck with that then. Let's see how much this love is. Nice meeting you, Miss Helen.

At that, she whirled around making her way to the counter lady just in time for Xavier and the salesperson with her shopping bags to join her.

“You're done shopping.”

She nodded. “Here, yes. Though I also heard that there is a fabulous Hermes shop in this city too, I'd like to go there another day. There is a new Birkin that I want to collect.”

“Anytime.”

Xavier handed his card to the salesperson and after the checking, he carried the bags in his able hands and made his way out of the shop, Elaine behind him. She stared at the bill written on the paper, eyes wide. He didn't even flinch.

A whopping $500000. Truly, she bagged a billionaire.

As they got outside the shop to the car where Xavier laid the bags on the trunk, her eyes caught sight of Rigel who she hadn't seen since the day at the private jet. He was smiling at her from the car behind them.

“Rigel?” She squealed excitedly, waving at him. He was going to wave back at her busy Xavier being Xavier, he hurled her into the car immediately, getting in and closing the door behind him.

“You didn't have to do that. I only wanted to say hi.”

“And why?”

“He's Rigel.”

“And Rigel is not your friend.”

Rolling her eyes, she stared, her eyes fixed on the road determined not to let the grumpy man beside her ruin her mood. She was over-excited because of the new things she bought.

“Your mother called.” Elaine found herself coughing loudly at Xavier’s words, her head snapping at him in surprise.

“My mother?” She asked, her voice loud.

“Yeah. She's inviting us for the family’s holiday week as per your family’s tradition.”

She chuckled in disbelief. “We just got married, she can't expect us to come to her useless family week for the holiday.”

“It’s happening next week.”

“I know, still.”

Just imagining the presence of her extended family for the year’s so-called family tradition, she could already feel the distaste. Those times were the worst times of her year. Meeting with her aunties and cousins. Can her mother stop doing it already?

“I heard it's compulsory.”

“Mother is so frustrating. I don't want to be there.”

“I guess you have no choice, doll.”

Throughout the ride, Elaine isolated herself at the other end of the car, almost fitting her body into the car’s door, her expression showing her displeasure.

Just as the car stopped in front of the hotel, she didn't wait for anyone to open her side of the door before she stormed out of the car, making her way into the hotel and the elevator that led her to the penthouse.

She swiped the door open with the card Xavier had given her and stepped into the house, fishing out her phone from her bag. She placed a call to her mother.

“Elaine,” Bianca greeted from the other end of the line.

Elaine brushed past the greeting. “Mother, what makes you think you can talk to my husband without my permission?”

“Slow down there, Elaine. He's only been your husband for two days.”

“That was not the question.”

“He's my son now, just as You're my daughter. Why is it wrong if I call him?”

“Look mother,” she began. How on earth did her mother even have Xavier’s number in the first place? Did she take it at the wedding? “You're going to speak to me about things and not him. I'm still not over the fact that my own mother took sides with her favorite daughter.”

“Are you trying to say that Ria lied?”

“I don't care anymore. I called to tell you not to call either of us anymore. We're on our honeymoon and I don't think it's appropriate to ruin it with your wrong energy. For you notice, we're not attending the family’s week or whatever.”

“What?” Bianca exclaimed.

“You heard me.”

“Then I should tell you that Xavier Romano already promised to be there and mind you, he doesn't go back on his word.”

Like that, Elaine’s phone made a beep beep sound indicating that the call ended. Taking deep breaths, she rushed toward the room, to the bedside drawer until she found her inhaler which she placed on her mouth and pressed.

She could already feel her anxiety rising at the thought of reuniting with her extended family. They were of no good.

After stabilizing her breath, she searched through her things, until she found her books. They would serve as a proper distraction for her both from the thoughts of Xavier and her mother.

Picking up the first book her hand could touch, she made her way back to the bed. She took off her heels and settled on the bed, her back on the headboard.

She began reading through the pages, eyes trailing each word, her worries pushed to the back of her mind.

But just then, she realized the kind of book she picked, her eyes widening.

“A…a dark romance?”

Just then, the door of the room pushed open and Xavier walked in.
