Boardroom Votes

In the large boardroom of the Romano company, sat more than twenty largest shareholders of the R enterprises. At the end of the table sat Xavier Romano, by his right was Margaret, and behind him stood his personal assistant.

At the other end of the table, the boardroom speaker stood with a large piece of paper in his hand and a small mic connected from his head to his mouth. Xavier Romano had a forefinger between his teeth, his legs crossed as he stared at the shareholders, a disinterested look settled on his face. All he wanted at that instant was to leave the boardroom.

The speaker cleared his and began.

“Thank you, everyone, for voting for your choice of candidate for the CEO position amongst Mr Xavier and Mrs Margaret. The results are ready to be announced.”

The shareholders all braced themselves in their seats, getting ready to hear the announcement that might break or make the company. Everyone had a tense expression on their faces except Xavier who looked uninterested in whatever it was that they were doing. His sister beside him had decided to compete against him for the post of the company and like she wanted, he’d let them conduct a majority vote amongst the shareholders to decide who was to be the CEO of the Romano family company.

If he wins, he will continue his reign in the company and if he loses, he will have to step down for his sister and do whatever she asks. It was quite audacious for his sister to dare go against him. Shocking too, to anyone else but him. He’d expected it to come. Margaret was power-hungry.

“Announce it then.” He let out a sigh as her voice reverberated in the boardroom. “I’m sure we all know the answer.”

Mr speaker nodded. “There are a total of twenty-two votes. I read: 2 voters decided not to vote for any of the potential candidates. That means that they aren’t satisfied with the choices of candidates.”

“That’s okay.”

“I’ll continue. Three votes voted for Right hand Mrs Margaret and seventeen for…”

Margaret stormed to her feet, slamming her hands on the table. “How is that possible?” She roared. How do I have such low votes?” Her eyes glared dagger at the shareholders whom she’d paid huge amounts to get them to vote for her but they avoided her gaze, looking everywhere in the room but her. “That can’t be possible. Crosscheck.”

“I’ll just continue.” The speaker ignored her outburst and continued. “Seventeen voters voted for Mr Romano and so we have a winner. The winner of the votes is Mr Xavier Romano who is the current CEO. His position remains.”

At the announcement that he’d been waiting for, Xavier stood up from his chair, arranged his suit, and announced. “The meeting is over. See you in the next meeting, dear shareholders.” Passing Margaret a cocky smile, he walked out of the boardroom with his assistant behind him. He headed toward his private elevator that led to the last floor but before he got into it, he heard Margaret’s call from behind him.

“Xavier Romano!” He stopped. The clicks of her heels became closer and soon, she stopped. He turned to find her in front of him. He scanned her from her head down to her white two-piece suit and then to her matching white heels. Why did she look like an Angel? A fake one of course.

“Sister.”

“Don’t fucking call me that, you cheater. This is why no one loves doing business with you. You’re a cheat and a cunning bastard.”

He raised a brow. “I didn’t notice that I am. After all, I’m not the one who paid the shareholders huge amounts of money to vote for me. I’m not the cheater here but you, Margaret.”

She looked away from him in embarrassment at her already-opened secret. But soon enough, she masked the expression on her face and barked back.

“You’re no different. Didn’t you offer them a larger amount to vote for you?”

Xavier’s lips curled upward and he leaned into his sister’s size so that he stood face-to-face with her at the same length. “Money? I didn’t even offer them a dime, trust me.”

“Th…then how?”

He straightened, dipping his hand into his pocket. “That is something you should’ve known before thinking of such a trick, Margaret. I’ve been in this game long before you and I know of ways to make people dance to my tunes, just like you would very soon.” She took a step backward at the intimidating looks that he passed her. “I’ll tell you how I got those men to my side if you surrender to me. My tips are expensive.”

“Got to hell with them then. You’re going to fall very soon, trust me.”

With his smirk still on his lips, he raised his hand and patted the hair of his sister before walking into the elevator, his eyes fixated on her, ignoring the look that she passed him as the elevator closed in on her.

With his assistant, Xavier strode into the parking lot, heading toward his brand-new blue Rolls Royce. He stopped in front of the gathering of the shareholders and scanned every one of them. They stood at the side of the lot, discussing a topic he already knew about.

“You all should return home to your families. We don’t do after shareholders meetings, do we?”

Mr Romano.”

“Mr Romano.” They greeted in unison.

“Good jobs, you all. I’ll do well to look into your files.”

At that, he walked out on them to his new baby, his eyes glinting in amusement. How he got them to his side? It was pretty easy. These men were the easiest to deal with. He just had to blackmail them with their dirty businesses and they had immediately agreed to do whatever he asked. Obedient little fools.

As he settled in the back seat of his car, he couldn’t help but throw his head back and burst into laughter.
