It Was Ria

Elaine quickly scrambled to the bed and grabbed a blanket which she wrapped around her body before stepping back to them. Her head felt light and her eyesight became blurred as she stared at the dress pooled on the floor. Who might it be that had planned to harm her, to kill her even and in such a cruel way? How did anyone even think of something so evil just to get rid of another person?

She’d known from the very start that people were evil but this right here was something else. Someone had fucking killed her, to burn her to death, and the thought alone was enough to make her feel like puking. It was a disgusting act.

“You see for yourself,” Xavier said pointing at the dress on the floor. “I heard that you asked that this dress be sent to my wife.”

“I did send a dress.” She stepped forward to the dress and picked it up from the floor, staring at it from the top to the bottom. “This is a beautiful piece. Why the hell did you destroy it? Goodness.”

“Did you send that dress or did you not.”

“Speak to me like I’m your mother that I am, boy. Do not raise your voice at me. We’ll talk this out like adults.”

“Mother!”

“I did send your wife a dress but not this one. It’s almost the same design but not this. I even wanted to ask her if she didn’t like the dress that I sent.”

At the woman’s confirmation, Elaine stepped backward, dejected, the woman’s answer proving her thoughts right. She clasped her hands around her mouth as the truth of the situation washed over her, drowning her in grief. She still was having a hard time believing it.

If Xavier hadn’t smelled it on time and detected what was in the dress, she would’ve walked into the kitchen and would’ve gotten burned in the process. And it might also affect the other people in the kitchen.

“What is wrong with this one?” Margaret stepped up behind her. “This is pretty too.”

“The fuck is wrong with y’all nose. Don’t fucking tell me you can’t smell that.”

“Language, Xav.” Mrs Romano glared at him and brought the dress to her nose. She sniffled, her eyes growing wide with each sniff that she took. She gasped and passed the dress to Margaret who had the same expression on her face.

Their mouths fell open. “Oh, my world. Is this what I think it is? Does this really have…”

“If I hadn’t smelled this on time, my wife would have stepped into the kitchen where foods were being made with fire and she would’ve exploded with the amount of chemicals in this.”

“Who would have done this? Elaine, dear, tell us everything. Who brought you this dress?”

But her head was light as fuck and she could barely see the people before her at the moment. She took steps backward as her legs began losing grip and just before she could fall backward, Xavier’s hands shot out and grabbed her, pulling her into his arms.

“Are you okay?” He asked, his fingers caressing her cheek.

She managed to pull herself forward and faced the women. “It was Emily. Emily brought the dress to me but trust me, she would never do such a thing. Emily would never try to harm me.” Although she was with Ria and was Ria’s ally, she knew that the oldest of them all was sensible and wouldn’t harm either of her sisters for anything.

She knew that Emily only acted on what Ria said. Ria was a big manipulator and knew how well to make people sympathize with her and be on her side.

“What makes you say so?”

“Because I know her. She’d never tried to harm me before.”

Xavier wasn’t convinced. He pulled out his phone and made a call, ordering Emily’s presence in the room.

In no time, Emily walked into the room with her eyes staring at each one of them, confusion laced in them. She frowned as her eyes fell on the dress and just like everyone else when they first stepped into the room, she asked. “What is going on? I was called here.” Her eyes raked through Elaine’s appearance. “Why is the dress on the floor? Do you not like it?”

“Did you bring this dress to her?” Xavier locked gazes with her, his piercing gaze caused her to look away. She shrugged and replied,

“I did. Is anything the issue? Honestly, I loved the dress but since I couldn’t have it, I had to bring it to the rightful owner.”

“There is a fire reactor in the dress,” Elaine let out. “We need to find out how it got in and who put it in there?”

“What is that? A fire reactor.”

“It’s a chemical mix I guess. Xavier said that if I’d gone close to the fire, I would have exploded with the dress.”

Emily’s gasp echoed throughout the room and she clasped her hand around her mouth to silence the rest of her surprised sound. “What the fuck? Is that even possible?”

Xavier stepped forward to her and grasped her arms. “You will do the answering and I’ll do the question. You brought the dress to her did you not?”

“Of course I did. But I was unaware that there was something like that in the dress. It was a really pretty piece.”

“And why did you decide to gift Elaine this dress? Start speaking now or else.”

She flinched when his hold on her arms tightened even more. “I didn’t gift her the dress. I was asked to present it to her.”

“By who?”

“It was Ria,” she cried out, trying to pull away from Xavier’s hold. She said that it was from Mrs Romano and since she was a little bit busy, she asked me to do the job of delivery instead.”

“So you’re saying that Ria asked you to bring her this dress?”

Emily nodded, letting out a sigh as Xavier finally released her. He turned around and dialed a number on his phone, placing it close to his ears.

“Get me Ria, right now.”
