Albeit’s Death
In her quest to get to the main door, Elaine didn’t realize the sprinting force of a human from the opposite direction. It was only after the obnoxious weight bumped into her and after the strings of gunshots that followed did she realize who she had in her arms. Her eyes almost popped out of their sockets. The weight of the body and the shock sent her to the floor, with the body on her.
She let out a scream when a drop of blood from the man dropped on her face and trickled down her cheek. It was then that it hit her, the depressing realization that the man was no other person than her very own father.
At that moment, she felt her whole life flash before her as the trickle of blood streamed down her face to her neck. She felt a bile rise up her throat, a desperate need to puke out everything that she’d eaten for the past weeks. As she cocked her head slightly to the side, she saw the lifeless eyes of her father open, staring at her but not staring at her. God, she needed someone to get him away from her.
Oh, his face alone was enough to make the events of that day resurface in her head, it was enough to make her scared to her bones. She needed nothing as much as she needed to get him out of her body, out of her face. The trauma that he gave her was resurfacing again. She needed help.
It was as if the heavens listened to her inner cries as the man was soon pulled away from her and tossed to the other side of the floor. A gentle hand helped her up with her arms and pulled her to her feet, the hand ransacking her body for any trace of injury. “Fuck, Elaine. You okay?”
She raised her glossy eyes to stare at the owner of the familiar voice, a reflexive sigh of relief escaping her lips. “Xa…Xavier?” She called, her hands darting forward to touch his face as if to confirm if he was real or not. “Are you real? Are you really here?”
Xavier threw the gun in his hand to the floor. “It’s me, baby. Did you get hurt? Tell me you didn’t.”
She turned her head to look at the man on the floor, her legs instantly losing their balance at the sight of the man whose eyes were opened, bullet holes all over his body. She wasn’t sure that she was ever going to recover from the shock that came with the sudden death. Yes, she knew that there was no way in hell that her father was still alive.
“Fa…father, he’s dead.”
“He is. He’s not going to ever hurt you or your family again. I took care of him.”
As her legs finally gave away underneath her, he pulled her into his embrace and wrapped his hands around her shoulder and head, his hands patting her hair slowly. “Don’t stare at it anymore.”
Xavier’s men soon surrounded them and he ordered them to pull the body away from their faces before he scooped her into his arms and began to carry her into the mansion. He fastened his steps when she became unable to keep her eyes open and her body became limp in his hands. “Elaine,” he called. “Don’t fucking close your eyes.”
“I…I feel like I’ll die.”
“You’re not going to. We’ll be there in no time.”
True to his words, they arrived at the living room of the Rock mansion in no time and he placed her on the couch, Elaine’s eyes immediately catching sight of her mother on the other couch with the servants around her, wiping her wounds and eyes. “What the hell, mother? What happened to you? You…your head is hurt.” She noticed the slight trail of blood on her mother’s forehead.
“I’ll be fine, don't worry. It’s only a matter of time and I’ll be fine.”
“No, you’re not. Oh my God, did he hit you? Are you sure that you’re fine?” Just as she was about to rise from the couch and rush to her mother’s side, she ended up falling into Xavier’s waiting arms again and letting him lay her again on the couch. He fished his phone out of his pocket and dialed a number, yelling into it.
“Get me a doctor, immediately. I want it in a second.” He caressed his wife’s hair and ended the call. “A doctor will be here soon, okay?”
“My head hurts,” she cried.
“I know, baby. Just hang in there.”
“I need to know what happened, right now. An…and did you send me away because you found out that my father was in the city.” She needed to address the topic there and then and perhaps get a closure for it. She needed to know if he truly sent her out of the city even though he knew that it was unsafe for her family members.
“Can’t you wait to be fine before we say all of these?”
“Let's say it now. Did you or did you not.”
“I’m sorry.”
That was the answer that she needed. “I wanted to protect you. He was fucking dangerous. It was all to protect you.”
“Why do I always have to be protected?” Despite the pounding headache that she felt, she still yelled at him, forcing back the tears that threatened. “Why can’t we deal with things together like every other couple out there, huh?”
“Fuck, I’m sorry. I promise I won’t keep things next time.”
“What would have happened if you hadn’t come here to save Mother. What would we have done?”
She clamped her eyes shut, trying to calm her racing heart when the door of the mansion flung open and Emily stormed in, followed by Ria. They both rushed to their mother’s side and checked her body for any trace of injury. “What happened to you, mother?” Emily cried. “How did he come in here? I made sure that you were secured.”
Bianca was finally able to talk and she shook her head, wiping the corner of her eyes with her hands. “This is his house and he knows every corner of it. I didn’t expect that he would return to corner me in the kitchen while I was making dinner.” She was still traumatized from seeing her former husband arrive in the kitchen all of a sudden after everything. She’d thrown all sorts of things at him but he’d been relentless.
If Xavier hadn’t come to her on time, she would have been strangled to death by the man. “He saved my life.”
It was only just then that Emily realized that Xavier and Elaine were behind them. She stood up from her mother’s side and strode to Elaine, wrapping a hand around her palm. “Are you okay? Did he hurt you a second time?”
“He’s dead.”
Silence enveloped the entire living room after her words. She knew that although Albeit had been a form of destruction and sorrow to them, he was still their father. He was still the man who was there at their birth and the silence that followed after announcing the news to her sisters was loud enough to make her heart shatter into pieces. “I’m sorry,” she couldn’t help but mutter.”
“No, I don’t care if he lives or dies. Such a man shouldn’t be allowed to live. He killed your baby and had no remorse for it. It’s such a shame that he couldn’t repent.”
It was at that moment that the middle-aged doctor strode in, his briefcase heavy on his hand. He walked toward Elaine on the couch and checked on her. “Mrs Romano will be fine after a while of rest.” Afterward, he made his way to the older woman and checked on her.
“Would you like to go home?” Xavier asked her. It was as if he knew exactly what she wanted and she nodded. Almost immediately, he scooped her up into his arms and carried her out of the mansion, heading toward his car that was parked outside. He placed her gently on the passenger seat and walked around to the driver's side. The car sped away from the Rock mansion, heading to the other side of the city where Xavier’s mansion was located.
Immediately they got to the house, Elaine wasted no time in getting out of the car. She didn’t bother to look at her husband as she walked into the house, climbed the stairs to their room, and pushed the door open. But before she could get to the bed, she felt a hand pull her backward.
“What do you want now?”
“We could talk if you’re angry.”
But she peeled his hand off her arms. “Please just leave, Xavier.”
“Fuck, I’m sorry. You can’t sleep angry.”
“Just leave for a while. Please, Xavier, please. Just go.”
