Your Sisters Are At Fault

“If that is what you're worried about, I’ll sort it out and make sure the bill is paid under your family name.”

Ria bit her lips at his words, her head lowering, wondering how on earth she was going to get Xavier to write a cheque for her. She looked behind her, at Emily for help but it seemed Emily was in the same thinking state as she was. What was the man? Writing a goddamn cheque for them shouldn’t be that hard, right? He had the money so what exactly was stopping him from writing the check? Did he perhaps see through their plans? She shook her head, an idea playing in her head.

“If you don’t have a chequebook, wire transfer is a good choice too.”

“If you want money from me, you know where to find me and how to get it.” To be found in his office and how to get it? Jimmy would have to work his ass off of course. “If nothing else is to be discussed, we’ll settle the bill.”

Xavier grabbed Elaine’s hands and together, they walked away from them. Halfway, Elaine stopped him.

“You can go pay the bill. I’ll go see my mother.”

“I’m not leaving you with them.”

“I’ll be fine okay. Give me a few minutes.”

She released herself from his hold and began making her way to the ward their mother had been transferred to. Outside the ward, she met with Emily and Ria. They were deep in conversation, probably scheming their next plan. Their faces raised the moment they felt her stepping toward them.

Ria rolled her eyes at her. “You’re lucky he was here to save you. Besides, something tells me that you and your husband aren’t as rich as people believed. He couldn’t even write a cheque of just one million naira for us. Who knows, he might be settling the bills on account of his name at the receptionist.”

Elaine folded her hands under her chest. “You were the one trying to defraud us while Mother was fighting for her life. One million my ass.”

Ria stuttered. “Th…that’s not true. Just admit that your husband is broke.”’

“You wish.”

At that, she made her way past them and opened the door of the VIP room, her eyes immediately falling on the woman who lay on the bed with her eyes closed. She walked close to the bed, sitting in the chair beside her mother and taking her hand in hers.

Her mother fought for her life in the ER, her palms cold and her body pale as hell and it was all because of her. She should’ve reassured the woman that she never hated her but she’d been so blinded by her anger to understand her mother’s situation.

She’d only been angry that everyone listened to Ria all the time and never cared about her. The betrayal that day caused her to have a different opinion about the woman.

Elaine placed the woman’s cold hands on her cheek, leaning into the feel as the tears she’d been holding since Ria said those words to her finally streamed down her cheek.

“Mother,” she began. “What made you think that I hate you? I never for once hated you okay? So you have to come back to us. I’d only been angry that you choose Ria over me all the time, I don’t hate you at all. Please forgive me,” she cried, her breaths coming in her pants.

“While growing up, didn’t I confess my feelings for you time and time again? Didn’t I tell you how much I love you? It never changed, and I love you just as much as I did. When you wake up, you better tell me that you forgive me and that you love me too. I’ve been dying to hear those words from your lips again.”

Elaine quickly wiped her tears immediately she heard the door of the room push open and the voices of Emily and Ria. Slowly, she stood up from the chair, grabbed her bag, and started making her way out of the room.

“I’ll give you a call if Mother wakes up,” Emily informed.

“Thank you.”

Stepping away from the room, she found Xavier walking toward her and she met him halfway.

“You’re done seeing her?”

She nodded. “And you? Are you done with the payments?”

“Yeah.” He chucked. “It’s only three thousand.”

“Five thousand?”

“Your sisters are something else.”

“They are.” The bill was a mere five thousand and her sisters demanded a million. They must’ve thought they were fools and would hand them whatever amount just because they claimed it was for the bills.

“We should leave.”

Before Xavier could turn, Elaine enveloped him in a tight hug, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her head on his chest. “Thank you.” She muttered.

“For what?”

Her tears began again, streaming down her cheek and soaking Xavier’s shirt. She sniffed. “For everything.”

“The fuck? Are you crying? Did they bully you again?”

She shook her head. “Let’s stay like this for a while.”

He patted her head while she cried in his chest, soaking his shirt and tightening her hands around his waist. The feeling of him around her was soothing to her. His scent made her want to sleep and the tiny pats on her back reassured her. He was helpful to her, really helpful.

She pulled away after a while and stared up at him. “You’re done crying?” He wiped the remains of her tears.

“You want me to cry more.”

“Of course not. We don’t want you falling sick, do we?”

“We should leave.” The smell of the hospital was already making her nauseous. She didn’t want to stay for another minute.

He wrapped a hand around her waist as he led her out of the hospital to their car. Once they got to the car, he led her in before running around lightly to get to the driver’s side.

He hopped in next to her, started the car, and drove out for the hospital premises.

“It’s not your fault that your mother had a heart attack, okay?”

She cocked her head to the side to stare at him. “I know. I…I just feel like I made her feel so.”

“Your sisters are at fault in this. If they hadn’t had an argument with her, she would be fine. You weren’t there.”

“Right.”

“Don’t bother your pretty head about anything, hmm? Don’t forget you have a fashion show next weekend.”

Right! The thought of her fashion show was enough distraction and she found a smile rode up her lips. Her company was having the biggest fashion show in its history. She was excited of course.
