Xavier’s Threat
“What did you just say?” Margaret rose from the chair, her glare a hard stare with each second that passed that she stared at her brother. Her fist tightened as she resisted the urge to pick up a knife and piece it through his arrogant heart.
Xavier grunted. “Eish, sis. It’s fun to see you so worked up. Sit, alright? I’m not done. Since this is clearly a competition to you, I should as well play along.”
“You just see women below you. That’s who you are.
“Trust me, I don’t see women as such. It’s just you.”
“What?”
“It’s just you that I see below me. It’s clear as day, big sis. You’re way below me!”
They shared a stare, one that was passed enough messages and hatred that they’d been harboring for years. From the look in their eyes, Elaine feared that the cafe would suddenly blow up into flames.
“You’re disgusting. I’m way better than you and capable too. It’s because you’re a male.”
“Why don’t you prove it, hmm? Instead of whining all day like a fucking kid, why don’t you show everyone what’s in you? It’s not about words, Margaret. If you want to be qualified to join this lifestyle, you need to do less talking and more action. It is the only thing that can help you.” He took a sip from Elaine’s cup of tea and continued. “Being a child won’t give you the company that you want nor will it protect your loved ones.”
“You’ll hand it over peacefully or else…”
Xavier grabbed Elaine’s palm and rose from the chair. “I’ll be waiting, big sis. Do your best and try to bring me down. I’ll give you three months.” Leaning in closer with a sly smirk, he dropped the bomb. “If you don’t bring me down in three months, I’ll pull you all the way to hell.”
With that, he pulled Elaine from the table and guided them to the exit of the cafe, leaving Margaret standing all alone with her eyes that brewed with fire. She swept away the cups and plates from the table and let out a scream that got everyone looking in her direction, some grabbing their bags and exiting the place immediately.
Xavier pulled Elaine with him out of the cafe to his car. He only let go of her wrist when he was sure she was settled in the front passenger seat of the car. He walked around and got into the driver’s seat. His eyes caught sight of her hand bunching her clothes. “You can say what you want to say.”
“I’m…I’m sorry for not listening to you. I swear I didn’t mean to see her. It was a coincidence.”
He chuckled, clearly not buying the lie. “A coincidence? Tell me more, young miss.”
Realizing that he caught her even before she could say another word to try and convince him, Elaine sighed and stared outside the window, beginning to spill the truth that he wanted to hear.
“I didn’t want to go see her but she sounded so serious in text, like it was urgent. My curiosity…You know how it is. I just had to go to get my peace of mind.”
“And you couldn’t say anything?”
“I thought it would be swift. Go and come back before anyone even notices. I didn’t know she'd start saying shit like that. I’m sorry.”
“You really know how to get on my nerves so well, don’t you, doll? What do I do to you now, hmm? You never listen. Are you possessed or something?”
Her mouth fell open in surprise. “What do you even mean by that?”
“You know. When are you ever going to listen? He let out a sigh. Forget it. It’s never going to happen. The day you listen is only when you want something. It…”
His words were cut off when she pulled off her seat belt, pushed her body to his side, and kissed him on his lips, shutting him off. She giggled as she pulled back.
“Are you calm now?”
“Fuck, doll. What are you playing at now?”
“Nothing. Can we leave now? I need lunch for real this time.” All because of Margaret’s words, she was unable to fully eat the cookies and nice tea that she ordered. Margaret’s words had caused her to immediately lose whatever appetite she had for the tea in the first place. It was sickening.
“You’re starving as your punishment.”
“I know you can’t starve me, Xavier. You can’t even fuck me whennim hungry.”
With a shake of his head, he started the car and drove out of the cafe, heading back to his company.
“By the way,” Elaine started, twirling her hair in her fingers. “How did you find me? Don’t tell me you’ve been stalking.”
“Confident, are we? Sorry to disappoint. I was just passing by from a meeting. It’s an open space.”
“Should I really believe that?”
“It’s up to you. I was really passing.” He’d been passing by the cafe from a failed meeting when he’d caught sight of her fucking having tea with his goddamn sister. He’d immediately swerved the car to the side and stopped and threw himself out of the car. It was a shocking sight. It wasn’t every day that he got to see his grumpy sister having tea in an open space with anyone other than their mother to talk more about Elaine whom she hated.
“I believe you. By the way, where are we going?”
“My office.”
In no time, the car rolled into Xavier’s company’s parking lot and they both got out of the car. He held her wrist and led her into the company, ignoring the eyes of his employees as they watched them like a hawk, their eyes skimming from their faces to their adjoined hands.
The moment they got out of the elevator that led to the top floor, Elaine was surprised to see Sonia already waiting for them. She pushed herself from the wall and rushed to Xavier the moment the elevator door pinged open.
“Mr Romano.”
