Elaine’s Father
She looked around, searching for the secret that hid beneath the walls, and stepping deeper into the basement, she finally found the secret she had been searching for.
Elaine traced the sound, turning on the flashlight of her phone as everywhere got dark. Her eyes widened when she saw a figure, folded at the corner of the basement, the sounds coming directly from the fighter.
She gasped. What exactly was anyone doing in a basement and worst, in their home? Then, it all occurred to her that Xavier had kept someone in this basement. He was keeping someone hostage in their home. Slowly, she made her way toward the figure, her legs taking her closer and closer until she could see the person clearly.
His face was buried in between his thighs and he was cowering away from her in fear. His hair was sprawled messy around him and his clothes were torn, blood leaking from every corner of his body. Blood? Was he perhaps tortured by Xavier? From the amount of blood stains on the floor, she feared that he was going to lose his consciousness soon. There was too much blood.
“Mr…” she croaked out, her voice low and shaky. “Are you alright?”
He cowered further away from her. Elaine squatted to his size on the floor, angling the touch to get a better look at his face but he hid his face from her. Her heartbeat increased, as she saw the outline of his face. The figure seemed somehow familiar to her yet she couldn’t wrap her hands around it.
“Are you okay? You need a doctor. I…I can help you get out of here.” She knew that it wasn’t the right thing to do without Xavier’s permission but the thought of Xavier being responsible for someone’s death was unsettling to her. She still couldn’t believe that he had a dungeon in their house.
What more could he still be handing under each floor in the house?
“I can help you get away.”
Slowly, the man raised his head. “Really?”
Elaine’s blood ran cold as her gaze fell on the man, her eyes roaming around his face in shock and when she finally recognized him, she lost her posture and ended up falling backward in her butt. Her whole body trembled and her head spun. It can’t be… it just can’t be.
This really can’t be happening. She chanted in her head. It wasn’t real. But there was no way she could be mistaken. That face, she had it imprinted in her head and she could recognize it anywhere.
“Fa…father?” She stuttered.
The man only gazed at her in confusion. But she knew it was him. It was her father, the man that she’d seen last many years ago. There was no forgetting his face. The scar on the left part of his eye gave him away.
“Who are you,” the man managed to breathe out.
Her tears streamed rapidly down her cheek and before she knew it, she was sobbing hard, her cries echoing in the space. It wasn’t the way she expected to find the man. It wasn't the way she imagined at all. What was her father of all people doing in her husband’s basement? Although he'd abandoned her and her family years ago, he was still her father.
“It’s me.. it’s me, Elaine, father. Your Elaine.”
His eyes scanned her from her head down to her toes, widening when he recognized her. “Little Elaine?”
She nodded immediately. “It’s me, father.” She regained herself again and helped the man up, helping him adjust his clothes.
“It’s really you.”
“How did you get here?”
“I should be asking you that, Elaine.” He clamped her shoulders with his hands. “Did he kidnap you too? Did he fucking bring you….” Just then, his gaze lowered downward to his stomach, his sore eyes opening in surprise, groaning in pain afterward. “Don’t tell me you’re pregnant with that bastard’s baby.”
“He’s my husband.”
“What?”
“I…I can’t explain now.”
“Do you know who he is, Elaine? He’s a part of the mafia.”
“I know.”
“You fucking go…got married to…to such a dangerous man.”
She looked away, her fist clenching by her side. Who was he to tell her who she was allowed to marry or not? But still, he was her father and she still needed to protect him, at least for the sake of her family.
“We have to do something about you.”
“He’s more dangerous than you think. That man…. He’s the devil himself, I’m warning you. Why do you think I’m here? He brought me here, to…torture me for days and left me wi…without water or food,” his words were hardly coherent as his jaw hurt as hell from all the hits he received from Xavier before he left. He could still feel the piercing pain in his jaw each time he tried to talk.
“And you? You’re a part of the mafia too?”
He looked away.
“Answer me, father. You left years ago to chase your dirty desires? To live this kind of life?” She needed to address the issue. She looked at the man with blurry eyes, unable to control her tears.
He for sure wouldn’t understand what they had to go through after he left years ago. He just disappeared into the air without thinking of his family.
“Let’s get out of here first before that bastard returns.”
He attempted to take a step but his legs gave way beneath him and he ended up colliding to the floor again. But this time, Elaine didn’t bother helping him. She looked at him beneath her and demanded the answers that she’d needed almost all her life.
“Help me up,” he pleaded.
“Not before you tell me the truth. The truth on why you decided to abandon us.” Oh, how she wanted to hug the man and tell him how much she missed having him around, how much she missed having a father figure but the pain of many years ago was still fresh like it all happened just yesterday.
And honestly, she needed a remedy for it.
