Vacation

“Why the hell do you look unhappy, Elaine?” Beth pondered as they carried the last of their suitcase into the trunk of the awaiting car once they both stepped out of the private jet. “It’s fucking Paris. You should be excited.”

Elaine took off her sunglasses and paused to turn to her friend. She let out a deep breath and placed both hands on her hips. “I’m unhappy and happy at the same time.” Happy to be in Paris but unhappy the trip was without Xavier by her side. He’s insisted that she leave without him, that he has something to settle that required her to leave the States. Somehow, she knew that something was wrong. There was something that Xavier wasn’t telling her.

After he’d announced it to her that day at the office, they’d had a huge fight that led them to stay apart for days. She didn’t want to leave without him but as always, Xavier’s words were absolute. He left no room for argument. But in all, she wanted to find out the reason he sent her away.

“How can you be happy and unhappy at the same time? Girl, you have to live, okay? Anyone will kill to be in your position.”

“You speak like you want to,” she rolled her eyes.

“Who doesn't? Something alike though.” She leaned into Elaine. “Let me tell you a secret, hmm? I’m busy sourcing the whole internet for men like Xavier.”

Elaine couldn’t help the crack of laughter that erupted from her. After her laughter died down, she shook her head and closed the trunk of the car. “I pray you do but I hope you can handle it when your husband sends you away from him with an excuse that he has some business to finish.”

“Perhaps it’s important? You know men of his group usually deal with dangerous businesses. He’s just trying to protect you.”

“Protect me my ass. Let’s just go.” She turned to Rigel who stood behind them with another security guard while they scanned the whole place. They were dressed in work suits and thick glasses that covered their eyes from the eyes of others. There was the main reason why Elaine was so worried that something was wrong back at him. Xavier sent his most trusted bodyguard, Rigel and for him to do that, it must mean that she needed as much protection as she could get.

“Can we leave, Rigel?” She asked.

“Of course.” He walked to the back door of the car and gently opened it for her. “Please get in so we can move to our destination.”

“Thank you.”

As Elaine got in, he shut the door close right before Beth could get in and she groaned as her fingers almost got stuck in between. “You.” She glared at him, her blood boiling at the fact that she was unable to see his eyes due to the thick glass that he wore. “Didn’t you see me?”

He looked straight ahead, not sparing her a glance while he spoke. “I’m not obligated to serve you. You can open the door yourself if you please.”

She scoffed, throwing her head back and letting out a low laugh. “I can’t believe this. I'm Elaine’s friend.”

“Not Mr Romano’s wife. Get in the car in five else we leave without you.”

“Trust me, I’m definitely telling your boss about this. How dare you disrespect me. I can’t believe this.” She kept grumbling at Rigel’s act toward her even as she opened the door and got in to sit beside her friend. If she was given the chance, she would take off those thick glasses around his eyes and smack him across his all-so-sexy face.

He was always a pain in the ass to her and she wondered how on earth they would spend the next days in his care. He was a killjoy.

“Stop grumbling. You’re making a noise.”

She turned her head to the side only to find her friend with her head on the headrest and a face cap covering her face from anyone’s view. She looked too pitiful for someone who had arrived in Paris for a vacation.

“God, I’m doomed. I don’t want to believe this.” Beth facepalmed herself. “Y’all are fucking ruining this for me. Urghh.”

Finally, after a few minute's ride, they arrived at the vacation penthouse. As Rigel swiped the card on the door and pushed it open for the women, they felt their eyes widen at the sight that they met with.

Beth had her hands around her mouth as she stepped into the penthouse, her eyes unable to stop staring around the room. She held onto Elaine’s arms and pulled her forward with each step that she took.

“Look at these interiors. Oh my, are we in heaven?”

“You’re sick.”

“This feels like heaven.”

“Or paradise?”

They looked around the house which was a perfect shade of white. Every piece of furniture was white including the piano that sat at the other end of the living room. It was like they’d been cleaned every single day.

“This penthouse belongs to Mr Romano. I do hope that this is to your liking. If it’s not, there are more.”

“What? There are more penthouses?”

“Way more than you can imagine. I picked this one because I felt it was the prettiest. Please check on it.”

“This place looks fabulous,” Elaine couldn’t help but comment. Just like Beth, she couldn’t stop staring around the apartment and from the look of things, she’d forgotten about the worries that had stood boldly in her head a while ago. She made her way deeper into the living room, opening the glass door of the balcony.

“This is such a nice view.” She scrutinized the place.

“I’m glad that you like it. If you need anything, I’m next door and there is a bodyguard right outside the door. Look for me if you need to get something.”

Before he could swivel around and head out, Beth butted in. “But why do you need to stay next door?”
