Elaine’s Refusal

Just as Beth finished speaking, the door of the office banged open, revealing the angry man at the doorstep. Glaring at the two women in the space, Xavier stepped in
Beth flinched, lowered her head, and made her way out of the office, escaping the eyes of the man who threatened to eat her raw with his eyes. The way he was glaring at her, he’d never looked at her in such a way before.

Once Beth was out of the office, Elaine straightened her back, rising from her chair slowly.

“What are you here for?” She eyed him.

“What I’m here for? You dare disobey me, doll?” He stepped further into the room until there was only just the table separating them from each other.

“I did and if time whined, I’ll do it again.”

He placed a hand on the table, leaning in, his gaze piercing, burning with enough fury and anger to get her legs trembling. But she wasn’t going to let him intimidate her, right? At least not this time. She straightened her back so that she looked up at him, her gaze unwavering. “What did I tell you? You’re not allowed to work nor leave the damn house without my permission.”

“And why aren’t I allowed to do so, huh? Because you’re Xavier Romano? Let me tell you, I’m done letting you control my life and damage my mental health.”

“I damage your mental health?” He raised a brow.

“Now you’re going to act like you don’t know how overbearing you are. Even the walls know, everyone and everything knows how overbearing you are.”

“You had just one rule, Elaine. Did you forget what happened a few days ago?”

“The same shooting sphere you called nothing?” She folded a hand under her chest. “We’ll, I decided to follow my husband’s words and believe it’s nothing.”

“You’re coming with me.”
He rounded the table, walking to her side until he stood face to face with her, towering over her.

“I’m not leaving this place.”

He grabbed her arms, intending to force her out of the office but she was relentless, this time not willing to agree to her husband’s words, and to his detriment, she forced her arms away from him, staggering backward a bit and raised her head to glare at him.

It was like a glaring competition, the other waiting for the other to give in to their wishes. They stared at each other, eyes brewing in fury. “You’re being disobedient. It’s unsafe for you outside the house.”

She scoffed. So he was just going to lock her in his pretty castle, provide her with everything, and expect her to sit still. In fact, before he came into her life, her life was peaceful and bearable, she thought. There had been no one trying to lock her up and definitely no marriage that keeps her tied.

“It’s unsafe with you around. And if you’re doing this because of the baby in my womb, then you’re just wasting your precious time. It’s my baby and I’ll protect it,” she spoke right in his face. “We don’t need you or your stupid secret organization.”

“Elaine,” Xavier warned.

“For your information, Mr Romano. I have things to do, as you can see. If you don’t mind, I’ll take my seat, my legs hurt.” She did just that, settling on her chair and opening the box of cookies Beth had made for her. She brought a cookie to her lips, humming in satisfaction as she took a bite from it. If there was anything good about the day, it was the cookies. The man remained standing next to her, his gaze fixated on her.

“You’re going to do this? Act like this?”

Elaine swiveled her chair to face him.

“Like how? Tell me. How am I acting?"

“Disobedient. You know I can easily peel you from that chair and drag you with me, right?”

“Of course I do, it’s you after all.” She maintained eye contact. “Try and you can watch me run into the middle of the road.” She paused. “With your baby in my womb.”

“You...”

“I think you're forgetting something, Xavier. Our marriage is not real.” His eyes widened at the mention. “We got married for a purpose and it isn’t enough for you to lock me, boss me around, and act like you own me. You don’t. I’m done buying your bullshit. If you’re done, find your way out of my office.”

Elaine swiveled her chair back to its original position, facing the table, the files on them.

“You’re not going to leave?” She asked when he remained still, staring at her as if plotting the thing he would do to her in his head. “Then I guess I’ll have to call the security then.” She stood up from her chair and walked toward the door, flinging it open, and calling for Beth.

“Call the security.” She ordered. Beth stared at her in surprise.

“Why are you staring at me like that? I said, call the security.”

“Yes.”

Elaine walked back into the room. She was done listening to the man before her, following his rules like she had none of hers. And so, right now, it was all about it here. She wasn’t letting him speak or dare to boss her around.

She knew that she managed to make him speechless when he opened his mouth to speak but no words came out. Folding her hands under her chest, she moved to the side, opening the way for him.

“The guards are on their way. You better leave before they arrive.”

“Are you chasing me out?”

“Of course. Does this look like a joke to you? Oh, they’re here.”

Before Xavier could say anything more, the door of the office was flung open, and three large security guards walked in.
They surrounded him.

She raised her brow at him, her lips riding up into a smirk.

“Take him out, please,” she ordered the men.
