Xavier’s Exes

“Who would have thought that you’d do this good on your first day in the cooking class.” Elaine smiled at a compliment from her mother-in-law as the cooking class rounded up. She smiled and turned her head to the woman, chewing on the soft bite of meat that she took from her hot pot.

“It’s all thanks to the guidance of the instructor. She’s one good one.”

“Oh, Rita? She’s a sweetheart. I love her a lot.”

Once their food had been submitted and corrections given, the women made their way to the couches again, tasting each other’s food and passing out compliments. Just before they could get to the couch, Kate turned in Elaine’s direction. “Your food was really nice, Mrs Romano. Mr Romano must be so lucky.”

Elaine did the laughter that she’d been faking since she stepped into the hall. “Thank you.”

“Anyway, I heard about your loss from your mother-in-law. My condolences on losing your baby.”

Elaine froze at the woman’s words. Everyone’s conversation froze with her and they shifted their attention to her, their eyes flickering over to their stomach.

“Oh my, is that true? You lost a child?”

“That’s so sad. How careless.”

“Children these days no longer take care of their babies.”

She felt her heart shattering into pieces as the judgy words of the women pierced her right where it was supposed to hurt. It hurt even more knowing that they were women, yet they weren’t hesitating to blame her for the loss of her baby without even knowing what happened.

Clutching her purse tightly, she faced her mother-in-law. “I’m sorry, mother. I’ll be right back. I’ll just go to the restroom.

With hurried steps, she stormed out of the hall and traced her way until she got to the bathroom. Slamming her hands on the sink of the bathroom and staring at herself in the mirror, she let out an exasperated sigh, the words of the women echoing in her head over and over again.

They said that it was her fault that she lost her baby, implying that she was a bad mother who couldn’t protect her baby as she could and just the thought of that alone was enough to make her breaths came in a rough harsh gasp. She dropped her purse beside her, turned on the tap, and let the water pool on her palm before splashing it on her face. She did it a few more times before finally staring at her ghost-like self in the mirror.

She was done letting people’s words get to her. The issue had been solved and although she loved her child to death, she couldn’t help but wish to forget about it, about the pain.

Just as she dipped her hand into her purse and fished out a lipstick, the door of the restroom pushed open and three girls filed in. Elaine’s head angled to the side and she watched them step to the mirror, their heels clicking with each step they took.

All three girls were exes of Xavier according to their mother and just the thought alone made her heart burn badly.

“It isn’t our fault that she lost her baby. See Ria? Her baby is healthy. They got pregnant at the same time,” the first girl spoke, bringing out a blush and brush from her bag which she dabbed on her face.

“Right. I think she’s going to act like we helped her act careless.”

The third girl spoke as she applied lip gloss to her lips. “Xavier must have been so heartbroken. We all know how he loves children.”

“Children? No, Monalisa. Xavier didn’t like children while with me. We spent a pretty long while together.”

“How many months?”

“Three. That’s pretty long for him. I doubt he lasted a month with you both.”

Both girls rolled their eyes at the other girl’s words. Their eyes burned in jealousy. They didn’t even have more than two weeks with the man before he outrightly dumped them and reminded them that their relationship was just about sex and nothing more.

“Don’t be so full of yourself. He didn’t get married to any of us, after all. I can’t believe he chose someone like her after everything. Fucking disgusting.”

That was the last straw to Elaine’s anger. She slammed the lipstick on the wash table and angled her body to stare at the girls. They wrapped their hands around their chest and angled their bodies to face her.

“Y’all know I’m here, right? I doubt you were taught any morals.”

“Morals? You speak about morals,” Monalisa chuckled and stepped forward. “Don’t be so full of yourself. We four know that Xavier would dump you like trash when he’s done with you. Right girls?”

“Right.”

“Right.” They agreed in unison.

“A piece of advice, Elaine. Start looking for a plan B now so that if eventually Xavier leaves you, you’ll have a solid shoulder to cry on.”

Elaine’s fists clenched. She found her hands closing tightly around her handbag on the wash table. She passed them a glare, not giving them the satisfaction of seeing that their words affected her. “It’s quite baffling to see children of prestigious families act this way. Like pathetic cheap whores. I and Xavier are now married and we’re going to stay that way for as long as possible so get that narrative out of your goddamn heads.”

“Don’t you dare call us whores when you’re the same. Who knows what you were doing when you had that baby.”
Monalisa let out a deep chuckle that echoed through the room. “You should feel grateful that we’re trying to tell you about him instead of getting too forward with yourself. You want to know what I think?”

“I don’t give one fuck.”

“I think that you’re also a pathetic whore who couldn’t be faithful even while pregnant. Perhaps that’s why the poor baby left, don’t you think? It’s no flex having a mother who’s a who….” A resounding slap from Elaine caused her remaining words to flutter and her head flew to the side, the gasps of her friends reverberating in the restroom.

“That’s a warning never to talk about me like that ever again.”
