Family Heirloom
“Oh my God, boss. You won’t believe what is going on.” Eliane pried her phone off her ears at the excited screams of Bethel as she answered her call. Drying her hair with a towel using her free hand, she walked to her bed, uninterested in whatever topic it was that Beth had in mind.
“Just say it. If you called to make me do some guessing math, then I advise that you forget it.”
From her phone, she could hear her secretary's lips twitching at her response. Although Beth was her secretary, they were also friends and have been together ever since Elaine decided to start her own company. If loyalty was a person, it would’ve been Beth.
“This is very important, Boss. You’re going to scream at the news.”
“Say it already.”
“The news brought us massive help. Our investors are back, pleading at our feet to accept them.”
Her eyes grew wide at the news. She immediately stood up, staring at the phone as if she could see through Beth from it. “Tell me this isn’t a lie. Really?”
“I’m telling the truth, Elaine. After Ria’s wedding two days ago, the company has been receiving calls on calls, all investors and models returning to the rejected stone that has now become the cornerstone, and Xavier Romano. He has a big role to play in this,” Beth replied, speaking her words without so much as a full stop between them, her voice laced with joy and relief.
“Oh my God, this is good news. Like a blessing in disguise. I really wish I could hug you right now.”
“You better be with that man, he’s a fucking blessing. The moment he steps into your life, everything turned out to be fucking perfect.”
Without realizing it, Elaine ended the call as she jumped around her room in excitement, her robe bouncing with her. It was the best news she’s gotten for the past month. Her life was back on track, everything was falling back into place, becoming ten times better.
Letting out a big sigh, she yelled. “I swear, I’m back to my track.”
A sudden bang from the front door caused her to almost lose her footing and if it wasn’t for the couch beside her, she would have fallen to her butt at the sudden bang of the door. Was Xavier back? Didn’t he have work? She wondered.
Tightening the rope of her robe, she took steps to the door and opened it. Peeking through the small open space, she stared at the right side of the hallway.
“What are you doing?” Xavier’s voice caused her heart to disappear from her chest as he spoke from the right, her heart thumping at the abruptness. She looked him over down to the shopping bags that he held.
“I…I was just checking if it was you.”
A low chuckle rumbled through his chest. “Who else has the password to this house?”
“Who knows? What are those?” Her eyes were fixated on the female shopping bags in his hands.
“Here, they’re for you.”
Her breath hitched.
“What?”
Xavier dangled the bags in his hands. “The Romano family is holding a small family gathering this evening. We’re expected to be present. I thought to buy you a proper dress that fits the occasion.”
A deep frown settled between her brows as she tried to decipher his words. How was she part of the Romano family to attend their gathering and why was he only just telling her? She had plans to relax all day, you know.”
“But I’m not pa…part of the…”
“The moment I got you out of trouble that day at your company, you became part of the Romano family. You’re my finacée.” His eyes raked over her slightly wet hair to her toes that tightened at his looks. He returned his gaze to her. Turning around to make his way back to the living room, he announced. “Go get ready, Doll. We don’t have that much time.”
She wanted to argue but his tone was commanding enough for her to get that he wasn’t going back on his words. Was she prepared to meet his family? Absolutely no! She doesn’t even know what or how they looked like.
“Fine.” Rolling her eyes, she glided back to her room with the shopping bags in her hands. Letting the bag on the bed, she brought out its contents. Her hands ran through the diamond black dress that stood out amongst other items, her eyes sparkling at the sight.
It was a perfect size for her. How on earth did he even know her dress size? He must have looked into her dresses.
“Impressive.”
Getting rid of her robe, she slipped into the knee-length dress and unboxed the other items. White heels, white handbag. She just realized Xavier’s favorite colors. Must be white and black.
Slipping into the expensive items, she proceeded to do her makeup before finally striding out of the room. Although she'd not been prepared for the day’s event, she still rocked. Elaine Rock was known for rocking anything fashion. Maybe that’s why the almighty brought her into the Rock family.
“I’m ready.” Xavier’s gaze raised from his phone at her voice, his breath hitching as he took in her appearance. She was literally the most beautiful thing he’d laid his eyes on. Just how well anything she wore became gold in her.
“How do I look?” Elaine asked at his piercing gaze.
Easing from the couch, he took steps toward her. “Gorgeous, perfect, you name them.” He leaned in, sniffing the air around her. “And you smell exquisite.”
“Th…thank you.”
Just as she was about to make her way past him, his hand closed around her wrist. “You want something?”
“A minute.” Dipping his hand into his pocket, he brought out a small golden jewelry box. As he opened it, her eyes fell on the diamond necklace. Slowly, he took it out of its box. “That is for me?”
“The Romano family heirloom can and will only belong to you.” At that, he pushed her hair aside and wrapped the glittering necklace around her neck. “Now, you look complete.”
Her fingers came around the jewelry. “It…it’s pretty.”
“Come on, we must leave now.”
With her hand on his, they both walked out of the house to Xavier’s Range Rover in the parking lot.
In less than twenty minutes, they were driving into the magnificent Romanos ancestral estate. Xavier parked the car right in front of the building before they both proceeded to get out of the car, throwing the keys to one of the servants. With their hands locked together, they walked through the opened door, their footsteps echoing in the huge mansion.
“Look who's here?”
