Sperm Donor
“See? I told you I’m completely fine. Do you believe me now?” Elaine asked the man beside her. A deep frown settled on his face as he started the car, driving out of the hospital. “You’re convinced now?” She pressed further.
“I’m not yet convinced. You still have to be watched.”
She rolled her eyes.
“You don’t believe anyone, not even the doctor.”
“Not when you’re so clumsy. What if something had happened?” Xavier glared at her from the side. “I told you you’re not trustworthy to look after my child.”
“Oh really?” She snapped. She’s spent hours convincing Xavier that there was nothing wrong with her. It had been only a week and a few days since he found out about her pregnancy. These days, her morning sickness became worse which she heard was pretty normal for pregnant women in her trimester. In the morning, she’d slipped on the bathroom floor, point of correction, almost slipped. Xavier had caught her on time and since then, he’d been insisting that there was something wrong and wouldn’t let it be if she didn't go with him to the hospital.
Well, she agreed and as she predicted, she was completely fine. Her baby was fine and so was she but the man was adamant pointing out how clumsy she was repeatedly. It wasn’t like she planned her fall or something.
“Since you don’t trust me with your child, how about you look after it instead? Should the pregnancy be transferred to you?”
He swept her a glance. “I meant that you should take care more.”
“And you think I’m not taking care enough? Don’t forget the child is in my womb. I’m the one doing all the work.”
“Yet not doing anything at all. The previous day, you went to the beach with your friend without my fucking permission. What if something had happened?”
“It was just a beach. Why do I need your permission to go to the beach.”
“You’re carrying my child, doll. It was cold at the beach.”
“Not cold enough to cause harm.” What the hell was wrong with the people around her?” She groaned in annoyance. She was carrying a life, a life not a toy. And for notice, she could take care of her baby just fine.
“Still,” he refuted.
“We have to get this clear, Xavier. I’m the one doing the work, the one carrying this baby in my womb. You’re merely a sperm donor.”
His head snapped to her immediately, his gaze piercing at her. But she refused to cower down.
“What did you say?”
“You heard me. If you want to be given credit for this work, come carry then any on your womb yourself.”
Suddenly, he turned the car to the side, parking right at the side of the street.
“What? You’re going to kick me off the car when it’s almost twilight? Fine.” She grabbed her purse. Right! What had she expected from their relationship? It only ends up in fights and quarrels all the time anyway. He drives her crazy all the fucking time.
“Stay the fuck still. The fuck is wrong with you?”
“You’re what is wrong with me. You’re the one who made me angry, speaking about protection like you’re the only one who cares. You’ll never know what it feels like to prepare to have your body expand in two. You just sit and sprout whatever the fuck you think. In fact, I’ll just go away.”
She intended to step out of the car, burning in anger but before she could open the door and climb out, his hand snatched her arm, pulling her back to position.
“Where the fuck do you think you’re going?”
“Anywhere without you. Isn’t that why you stopped the car? For me to get out?” She knew she was overreacting at the moment but whatever. He knew not to piss a pregnant woman off. Especially doubting her care for her child.
“We’re continuing this conversation later.”
He got out of the car, walked around to her side, and opened the door for her. Only then did Elaine realize that he stopped in front of a restaurant.
“What are we here for?” She asked.
“To have dinner, of course. Stop carrying that frown, ain't cute at all.” He held her hand and led her inside the restaurant, the security guards bowing at them at their entrance. Right then, she felt her heart fluttering and every trace of anger she had in her disappearing into thin air at his act.
She’d been angry at him, pissed in fact but he still noticed how hungry she was and still brought her to a restaurant after having such a heated argument with him.
“Welcome Mr and Mrs Romano,” the waitress greeted ushering them into the waiting space. She set out the menu on the table.
“What do you want, doll?” He asked, passing the menu to her. But she immediately shook her head and pushed it back to him. “You order for us. Anything without eggs.” She could barely stand the thought of them not to talk of the smell. It was offensive to her nose.
Xavier swiftly placed an order and in no time, the waitress returned with their food, gently placing them on the table. Realizing they were comfortable, she lowered her head and retreated to her position.
Elaine wasted no time in digging into the macaroni and cheese, one of her favorite meals. Putting a spoonful of food in her mouth, she stared at her husband.
“Why are you eating?” She asked, the food in her mouth muffling her words.
“More satisfying watching you eat.”
She shrugged her shoulders before returning her attention to the food before her, eating twice as much as she used to before she got pregnant.
Xavier continued watching her, taking spoonfuls at intervals. Just as he decided to focus on his own meal, his eyes accidentally caught sight of a figure outside.
