I Am George Dean

“Watch your mouth,” Ria snapped. She might not be the best daughter and sister, but she wouldn’t watch an outsider say shit about her family, or insult them. She might be broke, poor, and homeless but she is still Ria and is ready to fight at the threat of danger. The routine continued and as they say, silence was the proper answer.

After she refused to answer the girls and their provocations, they shamelessly left her but not without leaving her with words that would make her cry and drink all night. They called her names she never imagined she would be called in this lifetime and reminded her how much of a betrayal she was.

They were right though. There was no denying it. Finally, she finished shopping and made her way out of the shop with a large cellophane bag in her hands just in time for her phone to vibrate in her pants pocket indicating that there was a call. M

She paused, carried the bags in one hand, and fished her phone out of her pocket with the other, her eyes widening at the sight of the called ID. Why was she calling her? Emily?

She didn’t want to pick up the call but she didn’t know when her fingers pressed on the green button and she brought the phone to her ears.

“Emily?” She muttered, her voice shaky at the call of her sister’s name. Why was Emily calling? To scold her? To remind her how much of a loser she was? To tell her even more mean words than the girls had said? She wasn’t sure that she would be able to handle it if she heard such words from Emily of all people, her favorite person.

“How have you been?”

“Mmm, I’ve been living fine, really fine. Why do you call? If you’re calling to scold me or to tell me shit, I must as well tell you that I’m living a good life,” she lied. She was living anything but a good life right now. “I’m not broke and I eat more than three meals every day.”

“That’s great to hear. But I didn’t call because of that. There is of course another reason.”

“Nah I know what it is?”

“I’m getting married. I got engaged.”

Silence followed after Emily’s words. Ria froze, her eyes staring into space as the words melted into her ears. Emily was getting married. Her sister was going to get married and fuck, she didn’t know how to feel about it.

She’s envisioned hearing about Emily’s engagement in different ways but never in a way that didn’t require them to be together. She weaved her hands through her hair and nodded. “I’m glad to hear that. Congratulations to you.” How she wished Emily would be before her and she would be able to wrap her hands around her in appreciation.

“Thank you. Not just that, Ria. I have something else to say.”

She paused and waited for Emily to let out the words. “I was wondering if you’ll be able to make it to my wedding. I’m sorry if I’m asking for too much but before the fight, we were sisters and we had a lot of fun times together. If you can please think of the good times we three shared, you’d show up at my wedding. I already can’t wait.”

“I’ll do my best.”

“Thanks Ria. I hope that we meet soon.”

The call ended and she continued her journey back to Iris's house. Perhaps the girls were right. Her sisters had their shits together but not her. She still was struggling every fucking day of her life. She was at least happy for Emily though. Her sister deserved the love that she got.

“Hey.” Ria’s heart somersaulted at the call from the side. She could recognize the voice wherever she heard and as she saw the person from the corner of her eye, she felt her heart skip a thousand beats.

She pretended not to hear the call and fastened her steps, determined to get to the house sooner. It was only a few blocks away.

“Hey,” the person called for the second time, and just like the first, she ignored and kept on making her way forward. “I know you can hear me, Ria. You better stop this instant.”

At the sound of the biting command from the man, her feet automatically froze on the floor like it was his and not hers and slowly, she turned to face him, her trembling hands hidden under the cellophane bags that she held to herself. She summoned all the bravery that she had in her and swiveled around to face the man, putting in a confident look. If there was anything that she hated, it was how she looked pathetic whenever she’s scared.

“George, it’s you.” She faked a smile. The man stepped up at her, grabbed her arms and pulled her toward his car. Once they stood before his car, he shoved her against the door.

“What did I say about ignoring me? You’re fucking with me?” George’s eyes flared with fury and flames. His grip on her arm was so tight that she felt her blood gathered to her upper arms. She was sure that after now, she would find it hard to use her hand.

“I haven’t been ignoring you. Fuck, let go of me. You’re hurting me.”

“What happened to my calls then? Care to explain?” He twisted her arms further, causing her to wince in pain, her eyes welling up in tears. “Speak, now!”

“I swear, I think it’s my phone. It must have issues. I haven’t been ignoring you.”

“This is my last warning, Ria,” he gritted his teeth, pressing her against his car. “If you ignore me one more time and try to run away from your duties, I won’t hesitate to wipe your miserable self out of the face of the earth. Do you hear me?”

She nodded severally.

“Use your words.”

“I promise. I won’t ever ignore you. Now, please let go of me. It hurts.”

Finally, George pulled away from her and straightened himself, watching as she winced in pain yet tried to balance herself. She darted her hand upward to rub on her now swollen arm and she raised her head to glare at him. “What do you want now? Didn’t our business already end?”

“You owe me a debt that you need to repay. It’s time.”

“What? I already paid you the debt. I did as you asked the previous time.”

“Your debt is not paid until I say so. I did a lot for you.” Yeah, it was only rescuing her from the hands of the enemy but she’d have been dead if it wasn’t for him that day. He’d saved her and made sure that her enemies were no more.

Ria chuckled. “If you think that I’m going to keep doing as you asked just because you helped me one time, you lie.” She stared at him face to face, eyes to eyes as she spoke. “I’m not a pushover.”

He stepped closer to her again and towered over her with his height. She clenched her fist in anger and fear. To the outside world, the man before her was a goddamn saint and savior, she’d thought so the first time that they met too. But it was only a facade and she soon found out.

The man was anything but a saint and she learned it the hard way. Only her and a few people knew what kind of man George was. He wasn’t the good man that he claimed to be.

“You must have forgotten who I am and what I can do,” he reminded. “I’m George Dean and my word is law. You’ll do as I ask and repay your debt to me.”

“What do you want this time?”

“You know what I want, you always do. Don’t worry, you’re my favorite game.” He raised his hand and patted her hair. Only the almighty knew how much she wanted to slap his hands away from her skin and call him all the ill fated names that she had for him.
“When I get to the top of this city and throw him off position, you’ll be by my right side, okay? Tell me you understand.”

“I understand.”

With a nod, he shoved her off his body and she managed to stabilize herself.

“Tomorrow at the city park. Eight pm.” Those were his last words before he slipped into his car and drove away, leaving her standing there and watching the path where he drove off from. Was he finally going to make the move that he’d been planning for months.

She knew that when George sets out for a mission, he never stops until he wins and she had a feeling that this time, it would be way more bloodier and tougher. It might be a matter of survival. Because George meant destruction!
