Ria’s Threat

In another part of the city, loud noises reverberated from the room of a certain company. They were screaming at the top of their voices at each other, throwing things at each other and the house figuratively shook at the intensity of their fight.

“You better stop hitting me. I’m letting you be because of your pregnancy,” Jimmy yelled at the top of his voice as he snatched the pillow that Ria had been using to hit him. He threw it to the other side and held her hands from colliding with his face before pushing her to the side. If you don’t stop this right now, I won’t hesitate to give you a piece of my hand. I don’t hit women but you’re pushing me far,” he roared.

“Piece of your hand? I want to see you dare. Come on, do it.” She stepped closer to him, this time, not raising her hand to hit him but shoving her body to him, daring him to hit her as he threatened. “I want to see you hit me and let’s watch how you spend the rest of your miserable life in jail.”

“What will you do?”

Ria threw her head back and burst into cruel loud laughter that echoed in the whole room and house. “Want to know what I’ll do? I’ll give the police a call and tell them that you’re an abusive bastard. Dare me and I’ll show you what I’m made of.”

Jimmy ran his hand through his hair and let out a breath of frustration, his eyes dimming and his heart beating so fast in anger. He felt like snapping the tiny neck of the woman who was his wife and he would have done that if she wasn’t unfortunately carrying his baby.

If there was something that he regrets the most in his life was getting married to a woman who was a mini banshee. Just like now, she would scream at him even when she was wrong and threaten to call the cops on him. And each time, she always seemed to step out victorious and get him wrapped around her fingers again and again.

He was far too gone to think of a way out now.

“You’re sick, you know that, right? I’m fucking scared that our baby will take after your disgusting character.”

“If there’s anyone with a very disgusting behavior between us both, then it’s you. Your brain, the refrigerator, and your pocket, I wonder which one is emptier.”

“You’re the one who’s at fault here, Ria, don’t forget. You stole my money, my last money, and instead of apologizing for it, you’re fighting with me?”

“Your money is my money and why on earth will that be your last money.” Ria’s breath came in rough hard gasps as she punched Jimmy’s chest in anger. He clenched his fist to control his hands for descending on her. “You better ask your goddamn mother for money, shares, anything. Ask her to give us something if y’all still want this baby alive.”

His eyes grew wide. That was new. She was now threatening him with their baby? “Really? You’re going to use the baby for your evil now? By the way, lower your goddamn voice, mother is in the same house as us.”

Right! They’d moved from their house due to their inability to pay the rent and it was a good thing that his mother had taken them in for a while. He’d come home today only to find his safe empty with all his savings gone and when he decided to ask her about it, she raised her voice and began calling him names. Like a ducking lunatic!

“And how does that affect me? If she’s in this house, she better know that her grandbaby is in danger,” she raised her voice the more as she spoke and wrapped her hand around her baby bump. “I can do worse things than anyone can imagine so you better ask her for money before I get angry.”

“Or you tell me what you used my money for. My whole savings.”

“Shopping, of course.” Ria looked him in the eyes, ignoring the fact that she looked disheveled, that she was still in her night dress and hadn’t taken a bath since the morning, and that her hair was splattered around her hair like an angry bird nest. She looked like she had fallen into dirt. Yet she didn’t care and looked Jimmy in the eye.

“You a whole fifty thousand to shop?”

“A whole? Don’t be stupid. Fifty thousand is small.”

They both jumped in surprise when their door was flung open abruptly. They turned, looking at the new comer that had interrupted their heated argument and the sight of Margaret caused Jimmy to freeze and stepped forward. From the look on his mothers face, he knew that he was about to get chased from the house. His mother hated noise like she disliked her very own brother. It had taken him a lot of time to convince her to give them a space in her home.

“What is this noise about?” Her voice was laced with venom. “Do you want to be chased out to the streets? What is this about, huh?” The temperature in the room dropped with every syllable from the older woman. “You both know that I don’t appreciate noise here. And you..” She turned to Ria who didn’t seem as tense as Jimmy was. “You want to use the baby on us?”

“I didn’t mean it that way,” she fired back. “I’m tired of leaving like I was a peasant before getting married. Don’t I deserve better?”

“You just have to be patient for a while and everything will fall back in place.”

She rolled her eyes. “Wasn’t that the same words that you used two days ago? Yet you still lost to Xavier Romano in the boardroom. What a failure.”

A muscle worked in Margaret’s jaw. “Do not dare insult me.”

“All I'm saying is that, if I don't get a hundred thousand before next week, I'm taking your heir out.” A smirk settled on her lips once she finished her threat.
