Come With Me
“I’m not going with you, Xavier,” Elaine refused, avoiding his gaze.
Xavier simply opened the car’s door for her and cast her a warning look. “I said, get in the car!”
Reluctantly, she got into the car and sat away from him. Xavier got in after her, closed the door and ordered for the driver to start the car. Elaine wrapped her hands around her chest, her eyes brewing in anger. “I don’t want to go with you. Why don’t you get it?”
“Sit quietly. We’ll continue this conversation at home.”
“Legs talk about this now and get this whole thing done with. I don’t want to….”
“Shut the fuck up, Elaine. You think it’s fun letting another man caress your hand when you’re married? You think it’s fun?”
“I don’t think it is. Besides, whether or not George held my hands is none of your concern.”
“Oh wow.” He let out a bitter laughter that rang through the confined space that they were in. “You’re even calling him by his name.”
“That’s his name. What else should I call him?”
“You’ll keep quiet.”
“I…”
“Elaine!” His head snapped to her, his eyes glaring daggers that were enough to shut her up and made her look outside the window. The rest of the ride went by in a blur and in no time, the car drove into the familiar private garage of Xavier. He exited the car immediately and began making his way to the mansion.
When he didn’t find her behind him, he stopped and turned before walking back to her side of the car and opened the door. “You’re not going to come out? I’m not going to repeat myself.”
Elaine let out a scoff and hesitantly stepped out of the car. She followed closely behind Xavier as he walked into the mansion, stopping once they got to the living room. Finally, he swiveled around to face him, dipping his hands into his pocket.
His eyes scanned her from her head down to her toes, taking in her appearance from a closer angle before his gaze skimmed down and settled on her finger. The air around them suddenly turned ten times chillier and Elaine took a step back as Xavier’s eyes darkened. “Where is your wedding ring?” He popped out the question that made her hide her fingers behind her back. “I asked a question.”
She took a step backward, making sure that there was a bit of distance between them and she replied. “I…I left it at Beth’s house.”
“On purpose or mistakenly. Don’t you dare lie to me.”
“I left it there on purpose. There’s no use for it anymore, right? You’re going to sign the divorce papers and we’re going to go our separate ways. Our arrangement is going to be over soon and I didn’t think that there was any need to keep wearing it.”
“You became even more stubborn, didn’t you? Even more than before, I’m impressed. Like I said, there is no way out of this arrangement. You’re going to continue living here like we used to and pretend like that incident never took place. Do you hear me?”
“Th…that’s impossible.” Elaine clutched her bag to her chest. How would they live together in the mansion without the memory of the incident living in their heads rent free. For all she cared, she would remember the incident for as long as she lived and it would end up breaking her each time.
“Whether or not it’s impossible is for me to decide. And make sure you don’t see that bastard again.”
“Why? He did nothing to you.”
“He's no good.”
“Stop it, Xavier.” Her voice raised. “Not everyone is like you, okay? Not everyone is as ruthless as you are. George is a nice person and he even risked his life to save me when a car almost ran me over.”
“What?”
Elaine gasped at his exclamation of surprise that traveled through the entire house. She didn’t know when the words had escaped her lips and had blurted it out without notice. She knew that Xavier wouldn’t let it go if he finds out that she almost lost her life to a goddamn white sedan. Just the first time in weeks that she’d decided to come out and do her business, she’d almost lost her life.
Even now as they spoke, the aftermath of the incident still traumatized her and her body still trembled as it had when George had helped her get away from the car.
“What did you just say?” She snapped back to reality at the sound of Xavier’s words.
“It’s no big deal. I took care of it…”
She hadn’t finished her words before his hands reached out to grab her arms and pulled her to himself. He immediately began examining her body for any trace of injury, turning her around and looking her over from her head down to her heel covered legs. He only let go of her when he confirmed that there was no injury in her body.
“The fuck happened? Did you get hurt?” He asked, his eyes wide in surprise. “Tell me what happens in detail already. I want to know all of it.”
“I’d been on my way from a meeting where I got stood up and I was waiting for a cab by the side of the road when a white sedan almost crushed me. But it’s no big deal and…and your baby is no longer in my womb so stop acting like you care about me.”
“Elaine.” He warned her from saying the words that were already at the top of her tongue.
“I know that was why you cared. Because your baby is in my womb. You can stop with the fake concern now. No one’s life is at risk anymore. Besides, I know that you want to blame me for what happened that day. I know it was my fault and I know what you want to say but before you do, I’ll just tell you that I didn’t mean it to happen.”
