The Absence Of Love
Meanwhile, miles away from the Rock mansion, Ria stood before a bridge, staring at the river below. In between her fingers was a cigarette which she brought to her lips and puffed air out. Beside her was her car, the only possession that she held at the moment.
She’d lost everything. She lost everything even before she could get them fully in her hands. Her home, her fake baby, and her husband. Her life was doomed at the moment. After she left the scene of the argument, she’d gotten into her car despite Jimmy’s yells and driven directly to this place, to stare at the only thing that could give her a little bit of peace at the moment- the river.
Dipping her hands into her pocket, Ria fetched out her phone and placed a call to Iris. The call went through and at the third ring, the girl’s voice rang in her ears. “Ria, the only girl who can shake an entire family. Is there something that you want me to do? I’ll show up right away.”
“Iris,” she lazily called.
“Yes, dear. The fuck is wrong with your voice, hmm? Did someone offend you despite knowing that you’re pregnant? Not literally, you know.”
“I got caught.”
Thick fog of silence was the only answer that Ria received after she dropped the bomb. She’d expected it, you know. Considering how careful she was and how smart she was concerning stuff like this, it came as a blow to her that she got caught before she could get to the end of the show. It was so sudden.
Finally, after a long while of silence, Iris spoke. “What?”
“You heard me, I got caught by my mother-in-law. Not only that, she dragged me to my mother’s house and exposed me in front of everyone.” She let out a chuckle. “Worst, Elaine was there.” There was a particular thick bite in her voice that came with the mention of Elaine. She spoke the name like it was some sort of forbidden name that shouldn’t be spoken. The hatred that she harbored in her was evident.
“Elaine? But how?”
“The bitch has been keeping tabs on me. She came to expose me to everyone but to her delight, my godforsaken mother-in-law beat her to it.”
“Girl, this is bad. I never imagined this. What are you going to do now?”
“Can I come crash at your place for a while? I can’t go home right now.” Iris was the only real friend that she had, the only friend that she could ask for a favor shamelessly. The rest of them were simply just gold diggers who were friends with her for the benefit.
“Of course. My house is always open to you.”
“That’s great. I’ll be there in a while.”
With that, she ended the call and slipped the phone back into her pants pocket before returning her attention to the river below her. She tightened her hands against the railing with each second that passed. Would her life issues end if she took a jump? Will she finally have peace if she jumps down there and lets herself go? She could feel the force, the pull of the river, and at the back of her mind, she could hear the voice asking her to jump already.
If and only if she had enough courage to end her own suffering.
Suddenly, she felt a hand snatch her arms and pull her backward, forcing her to step away from the railing. She swiveled around, her eyes rolling when they came in contact with the man before her.
“Let the fuck go of me,” she snatched her arm from his hold and wrapped them around her chest. “You have no right to touch me anymore.” She threw her cigarette on the floor and extinguished it with her foot.
“Ria!” Jimmy snapped. “The fuck were you trying to do by the river? Don’t tell me…”
“Oh please, don’t go there. You of all fuckers know that I’m not such a loser to give up so easily. This is a battle that I’m ready to fight, you hear me?”
“Okay, I hear you. Let’s talk.”
“There is nothing that we have to talk about, Jimmy. Look, I tolerated you because of your family’s benefit. While you dated Elaine, I was so fucking jealous of how you looked at her, how you speak to her, and how wealthy her man was. I seduced you and you like the pussy chaser that you are, fell for my charms. But that’s it. In the absence of the love, the monetary benefit, and everything that Elaine has, there is nothing between us.”
Jimmy swallowed, his fist tightening inside his pocket as he clenched his jaw so tight. “I should be the one feeling angry and fucking betrayed.”
She shrugged. “It’s your life. You can feel whatever you want to feel. I don’t give a fuck.”
“You fucking lied about a baby, Ria. It’s a life. I told everyone that we are expecting a baby. I fucking loved a baby that didn’t even exist. I…” He heaved a deep breath and blinked as his eyes burned with the attempt to push back his tears. He threw his fingers into his hair and let out a frustrated groan. “This is the height of your deceit, Ria. I never expected this from you.”
“Well, now that it happened, you can go on with your life. Go back to the person that you love. “
“So this is about Elaine?” Of course, it was.
She looked away.
“So this is fucking about Elaine? You lied to me about our baby because you were fucking jealous about your sister? It’s high time that you stop this obsession with her. Christ, she’s your sister. You’re only making yourself seem pathetic.”
“Pathetic?”
“You’re fucking pathetic, Ria. And trust me, you’ll never be able to live up to Elaine’s way in anyone’s heart. No one wants a jealous lying bitch. It’s disgusting as hell.”
