The Attack
“I think this is one of the best Macaroni I’ve tasted in a long while,” Elaine moaned, seeming to not have enough of the bowl of macaroni and cheese. She raised her head to stare at Xavier only to find him looking outside the building, his eyes fixated on something.
Chills spread throughout her whole body as she felt the dark aura emanating from him all of a sudden. His eyes darkened, fist clenching on the table.
“Xavier?” She called. “Is everything alright?” She looked at the place where he was staring at but found nothing of interest. Immediately, he stood up from the chair, his fingers weaving through his hair and he looked panicked.
“Stand up, Elaine. Quickly,” he urged, fishing his phone out of his pocket, his fingers typing hurriedly in panic.
She stared at him in confusion.
“Why? I’m not done.”
“Fucking stand up,” he roared. But before her body could register his command and obey, he roared again, this time, his voice laced with panic. “Put your head down.” His hand held her head and pushed it down to the table and he squatted to her size, as she felt something whooshed past her head. She cocked her head to the side, her eyes widening as they fell in the bullet hole through the wall. Her body trembled.
Xavier pulled out of the chair to the floor, his body covering hers as he typed something on his phone. The sound of bullets and screams filled the restaurant, two parties exchanging bullets. Everyone had their heads down.
“You’re going to listen to me, doll.” Xavier started. She held onto his shirt, her body shaking in fear. “You see that door?” He pointed to the opened door at the side. “You’ll go in there. There is a secret passage out of this place, okay? Go now.”
She shook her head, her body clinging on to him. She could barely hear his words or anything in fact. She knew that she needed to stay with him to be safe. If she goes through the door, what if danger follows her and he isn't around?
“Elaine.”
“I…I can’t.”
Strings of curses escaped his lips, his hands angling her so that she was secured between him and the table and he brought his hand to his waistband, pulling out a gun. Elaine’s eyes almost popped out of their sockets at the sight of her husband cocking his gun, getting ready to engage in the combat.
“Boss, come with me.” Their eyes raised to the man in front of them. Xavier pulled her up carefully. The man blocked them, shooting at the opposites as they walked to the secret passage he talked about, climbing the stairs down. Once they got to the end of the stairs, Xavier pushed open an iron door, a bush part revealing to them afterward.
He held her hand tightly as they walked through the bush, his other hand typing something on his phone.
She was cold, so cold that she could feel her bones quivering, her body still trembling as an aftermath of what she experienced. She could still hear the gunshots even though they were halfway out of the premises. One minute she was enjoying her macaroni and cheese and the next, they were running out of the place with some people whom she guessed as Xavier’s men protecting them from behind.
The situation was unclear to her. Where did the men come from? Why were there people after them? Why was she almost shot back at the restaurant? What would have happened to her if Xavier hadn’t pushed her head down on time? The thought of that caused a sob to break out from her throat.
Finally, they got to the end of the bush, a black Range Rover waiting for them and slowly, Xavier helped her into the cat, settling beside her and ordering the driver to step on it. The car started immediately, speeding out of the premises at the speed of a bullet. She hugged herself.
Beside her, Elaine heard him release strings of curses, his body tensed and rigid. Finally, he turned his attention to her.
“You okay?”
She hugged herself tighter, her body shaking tremendously. “Turn on the car's temperature,” she heard him order the driver.
He pulled off his coat, wrapping it around her and pulling her to himself, her head on his shoulder. “You’re fine now, okay.”
The sob she’d been holding back finally broke out from her throat, tears streaming down her cheek as she held onto him tighter than ever, her hands wrapping around him. That was the only way she felt safe. With Xavier around her. He was the only one who made her safe and being close to him almost assured her that everything was fine and nothing was going to happen to her or their baby.
Xavier dialed a number in his phone. “Boss,” a voice rang from the other side.
“The fuck was that? What the hell I pay you for if you don’t do your goddamn job properly? You had one job, just one and you fucking flop?”
“It was totally unseen, sir,” the man spoke in urgency. “We were totally caught off guard by them. They were smart enough to come as ordinary people.”
“Who are they from? What bastard fucking sent them to attack me and my wife at dinner.” His hands trembled with the urge to harm something, someone. The urge to make the person who put his wife in the situation pay. And fuck, the Almighty knows the person was going to pay one way or the other. He would make sure of it.
“We couldn’t even get one. They’re fucking smart.”
“Damn it. I don’t care what you do. Find out, get one for fucks sake.”
“Yes sir.”
Ending the call, he dialed another number.
