Tell Xavier The Truth
Elaine finally justified her distaste for parties, gatherings in fact. She finally realized that they weren’t for her and although it would be hard, she would try her best and avoid future parties like a plague. Here she was, standing in the middle of the Romano family hall, glued to Xavier’s side and smiling at everyone that came their way. For the past 25 minutes and 30 seconds, since they walked into the hall, she’d been smiling non-stop as expected of the newlywed wife of Xavier Romano.
She was glad though, she wasn’t the only one in the same position. From the occasional groans and irritated sounds escaping Xavier’s lips, she could tell he was no social butterfly just like she wasn’t. They both were around only because of the responsibility.
The only reason she was ignoring the urge to go upstairs and abandon every responsibility was the scent of the different dishes that managed to get her liking. The aroma from the fruity snacks hits differently. Well, ever since the baby in her clocked eight weeks, she’d been eating like she was born just for that.
The baby was going to make her become twice her size by the end of the pregnancy if she couldn’t find a solution to her constant eating habit. Xavier too was noticing the change in her eating habits and he was starting to get suspicious of her.
No need to hide it further. She was planning to let the cat out of the bag at the end of the party, letting him know about the baby he put in her and accepting the consequences afterward. Sooner or later he would find out anyway. She needed to tell him before her bump started protruding further.
“Elaine dear.” Elaine broke away from her thoughts at the sight of her mother-in-law stepping toward her, clad in a fine fabric dress and the designer bag she got for her. Once Mrs. Romano got to her, she engaged her in a tight hug. “Look how pretty you are, my dear.”
“You look pretty yourself, mother.” They broke away from the hug.
“Tell me, has my son been treating you well? I know he’s a dick.”
“Mother,” Beside them, Xavier protested.
“What? You’re lucky she’s glowing. I would’ve spanked your butt for not looking after her.”
“Good, she’s fine as you can see.”
“Are you okay, dear? You’re not drinking.” The woman grabbed a glass of wine from the waiter and handed it to her. She slowly accepted it. “Come on, don’t be scared. You’re not going to get drunk from drinking a glass of wine. And even if you get drunk, my son is capable of taking care of you.”
Xavier rolled his eyes at their exchange. Before Mrs. Romano could continue doting on Elaine, two women her age walked toward them, each clad in designer wear and heels that seemed too high for their age.
“Roberta, congratulations on your son’s wedding,” the first greeted, passing a flying kiss to her.
“Thank you so much,” she beamed. “This is Elaine, Xavier’s wife.” Holding her forward, she introduced.
The women let out pretentious gasps like they hadn’t seen the news and exactly what Xavier’s wife looked like.
“She’s stunning.”
“She’s pretty.”
Both eyes rode downward until they settled on Elaine’s flat tummy. “Will there be an heir soon? I mean, after marriage, an heir should be the next thing, right?”
Mrs. Romano giggled. “Perhaps they’ll give us an heir soon. What do you say, Elaine?”
Elaine’s heart skipped a beat at the piercing eyes staring at her, especially the dark ones beside her, eyes she knew belonged to Xavier and Xavier alone. She felt her knees weakening. How was she going to reply with the amount of eyes on her? What exactly do they want to hear from her?
“Ehh..eh, I…”
“It’s not important for now.” Xavier interrupted, his voice cold and pressing. “We’re not in a hurry for now.”
At that, the woman asked no further questions, nodding in agreement.
“We should see the guests, Roberta. Come on.”
“I’ll see you around, child,” Mrs Romano said before walking away with her friends.
Elaine felt her heart shattering into pieces, Xavier’s words echoing in her ears. It wasn’t important, a child. He didn’t want one, she knew that from his tone. How his lips twitched at the mention of a child like it was the biggest distaste of his life.
Good lord. What was he going to do when he found out that she got pregnant from a sex they had at the spur of the moment? Would he ask that she abort the child, that he wasn’t ready to father a child?
Instinctively, her hand flew to her stomach. The child has already become a part of her. Would she be able to let it go?
Lost in her thoughts, she didn’t notice when Xavier whispered a ‘I’ll be right back’ into her ears or when Ria’s friends approached her.
“What’s with you?” The first girl hit her lightly on her shoulder to get her attention back to the party.
Finally, she snapped. “Wh..what?”
“I know you’re the reason why Ria couldn’t attend this party. Such a shame.”
She ignored them, looking at the platform where Xavier stood. He was raising a toast.
At some words he spoke that she didn’t hear, everyone raised their glass to their mouths.
“You’re not going to drink? Don’t tell me your dear husband is going to scold you like a child?” Ria’s friends taunted.
Before she knew it, the hand gripping the drink raised to her lips and she emptied the contents of the glass in her mouth.
