Emergency Room

Right after the girls left, a nauseous feeling washed over Elaine and she found herself stepping backward, heading toward the stairs that led to the rooms in the Romano mansion. She used the railings for support until she got to the end of the stairs, striding through the hallways that led to Xavier’s room. Luckily, she still remembered the route to his room from her last visit to the mansion.

Once she got to the door that creaked open with a push from her, she stepped in, running into the bathroom, bending over the sink, and trying to get the alcohol out of her system but it was all to no avail.

She brought two fingers into her mouth, deep-throating them, desperate to puke but right when she needed it, it did not. She’d been vomiting for the past few days, why can’t she, now when she needs it? She didn’t know what came over her that she had to gulp down a whole glass of wine without thinking. Fighting back the nauseous feeling that threatened to overtake her, she splashed water onto her face, not caring about her makeup.

A gasp escaped her lips from how pale she looked compared to how she left home for the party. She’d been excited to attend and had dolled up but now, she looked pale in comparison.

Elaine grabbed a towel and wiped her face with it before supporting herself with the wall out of the bathroom.

The pain in her head consumed her and she felt the room spinning before her eyes, overcoming her every being, her head pounding painfully. Although she tried to keep awake, it was all to no avail as her eyes soon grew heavy. She could barely make out the furniture and admirable interiors of Xavier’s room, or the way his childhood picture was hung on the wall beside his bed.

Suddenly, the door of the room kicked open and Xavier rushed in, marching toward her, a frown settling on his face at the sight of her

“What’s wrong with you, Doll?” He asked, his voice laced with concern. “You’re okay? You look pale.”

Finally, her eyes closed and she succumbed to the darkness, her legs giving away, too wobbly to keep her standing for another second but before her body could collide with the floor, he caught her, resting her body with his.

“Elaine,” he called once, twice, and when she remained unresponsive, he scooped her into his arms and dashed toward the stairs, his feet hitting the steps two at a time. Everyone’s attention shifted to him as he ran past them.

“What's wrong with her?” His mother asked right as he breezed past her.

He carried her out of the mansion, bellowing on top of his voice at the driver who came to a screeching halt in front of the mansion, the door swinging open in unison. Without a single glance at the party’s guests, he jumped into the car and gently lowered Elaine onto the seat.

“Drive quickly, at the highest speed,” he ordered.

In less than ten minutes, the car stopped in front of the hospital, the nurses opened the car’s door and got her out of the car on the stroller which they immediately wheeled to the emergency room, Xavier behind them.

“Please wait here, sir,” a nurse stopped him before he could get in.

“Get the fuck out of my way.”

“You can’t go in, sir.” She pushed him out of the room, closing the door behind her and stepping forward to the other nurses.

Outside the room, Xavier ran his hand through his hair in frustration, wondering what on earth had happened to his wife all of a sudden. She’d been fine when he left her side to the platform.

After he’d finished with the toast and greeting of the guests, he’d started making his way to the spot where he left her only to see her at the top of the stairs, climbing weakly. He’d noticed that she looked deadly pale, clutching her gown with one hand, and with the other, she’d held onto the railing for her dear life. He’d pushed everyone out of his way and ran toward the stairs, to his room where he knew she would go only to push the door open and see her almost as pale as a ghost.

What would have happened to her if he hadn’t found her on time? If he hadn’t seen her climbing the stairs. Just the thought of that was enough to have him punching the wall at his side.

His little intriguing wife was lying in the emergency room, probably fighting for her life and there was nothing he could do.

“Xavier?” He turned at his mother’s call. She took fast steps toward him. “What happened to her all of a sudden?”

“I don’t know. She suddenly fainted.”

“Oh my God. I hope it isn’t serious.” Her hands flew to her mouth. “I called the best doctors in the city, the best nurses, and even the best professors.”

“She’ll be fine, mother.”

“She suddenly fainted.” Like a bulb suddenly lit up in Mrs. Romano’s head, she stared at Xavier in shock. “Could it be that ….that she’s pregnant?”

Right then, the door of the emergency room pushed open and the doctor stepped out, taking out his gloves.

“Where’s the patient’s family?”

Xavier stepped forward. “I’m her husband.”

“Please come with me. We shall have a discussion in my office.”
