You’re Bad Luck, Elaine
“See what I told you, Emily. She's bad luck. It didn’t change at all. It never changed. I’ve been trying to convince Mother of this for the past months and I’m sure this would prove me right.”
“What are you trying to say?
Ria stepped forward, glaring at Elaine. “That once again, you’re the reason why we might’ve lost our father for good.” She hit Elaine on her shoulder, pushing her backward. Elaine staggered backward a bit before regaining her stand again. “You’re the reason why we couldn’t see him after he came back after so many years. I’m disgusted by bad luck like you.”
“Stop it!” Elaine yelled as the words hit her like a wave, drowning her in grief.
“What? I’m telling the truth. It’s crystal clear that you’re a jinx, a bad luck, a murderer. Tell me, where is father? It’s all because of you that we can’t find him for a second time. Also, where is your baby? Where is your husband?” She sighed. “I guess a jinx like you wouldn’t have the answer to such questions.”
“Ria, it’s okay.” Emily stepped in between them, pulling Ria backward.
“It’s not okay. I wonder why she was even born in the first place. Everyone has luck except her.” She swiveled again to stare at Elaine. “You know what I think? I think that your ill luck has succeeded in murdering your poor baby and chasing your husband away. No one around you lasts long, Elaine, don’t tell me you don’t know. Everyone around you ends up doomed one way or the other.”
Elaine had thought that her tears had dried up after crying for the whole week. She didn’t think that it was possible for her tears to stream so heavily down her cheek like she hadn’t cried for the whole week, yet it did at each word that Ria spat. At each jab, she let out a sob.
The words from her sister, from a family member made her realize that the voice in her head had been right all along. But didn’t Xavier once tell her never to dwell on emotions like that? At that, she stepped forward and pushed Ria aside.
“That is a lie. You don’t know what you’re saying,” She forced out. “If you’re here to plant these words in my head, then I should tell you that you’re doing a very bad job. It’s not going to work, not this time, Ria. Just leave already.”
She stepped to her door and pushed it open. She stepped into the house when the door unlocked and just before she could close it on them, Ria’s legs stopped the door from closing and she stepped in front of her.
“Running away like always won’t change the truth, Elaine. Your poor unfortunate baby must be blaming the almighty for giving it a jinx mother like you. I feel for it too.” Ria pushed her on her shoulder again. “I pray no baby will be unfortunate enough to be in your womb. You must be cursed.” At that, she struck Elaine with a hit again on her shoulder that sent her on the floor butt first, her items sprawling on the floor next to her.
Grabbing the hands of her sister, they walked out of the house together, slamming the door close behind them.
Elaine sat on the floor in tears, Ria’s words reverberating in her ears over and over again. She held her knees to her chest, bawling her eyes out, her tears wetting her clothes.
Maybe everyone was right after all. Her happiness never lasts. There wasn’t a time when she was truly happy without fear, there wasn’t a time when her life went as planned. Maybe she was truly a jinx, after all, she couldn’t help but think.
They must be right. First if was her father, then it was her baby, and then Xavier. She always inflicted harm on the people close to her all the time. She caused them pain and then, her poor baby. It didn’t even have the chance to see the light of day without getting hit by her bad luck.
It was her fault that her daughter was dead.
Suddenly, she felt her breath come in short rough gasp and she immediately began hitting her chest, trying to catch her breath. When it became even worse, she stretched toward the bags of groceries and grabbed an inhaler, promptly pumping it into her mouth. After a while, her breath stabilized again and she finally had the strength to stand up from the floor and headed toward the couch.
She grabbed the ultrasound photos from it and brought it to her face, staring at it with her tears resuming their roll all over again.
Maybe in another life, her baby would have a better Mommy and would have all the chance in the world to see the light of the day and live her life to the fullest.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the ring of her phone, indicating that a notification just come in. She brought out the phone from her hoodie and stared at the text. Wiping her tears, she read it.
Beth: Are you okay, Elaine? You sure you don’t want me to come over again?
She quickly typed back a reply.
Elaine: I told you I’m doing okay. Don’t come here. You know what happened the last time.
A few days ago, Beth had shown up in her apartment despite her numerous warnings to stay away. And when she eventually came, Eliane didn’t let her in. She’d stood outside for a while and after getting tired of convincing Elaine to open the door, she’s finally left.
Beth: I’m coming over tomorrow if you like it or not. I’ll knock on your door until everyone surrounds your house.
Elaine: I told you I’m good. I just want to have a good rest. I’ll be out soon.
Beth: Did you take your meds?
Elaine: I did. Good night.”
Throwing her phone where she didn’t care, she gripped the ultrasound report in her hand and hugged it to her chest, returning to the floor and closing her eyes.
