Sleep Talk

“No worries, I’ll take my leave now.”

After a short handshake, Elaine watched as the man stood up from his chair and stepped out of her office. Only after he got out of sight did she pick up her phone from the table and answer the call of her husband who wouldn’t stop calling. She pleased the phone a few inches away from her ears.

“And what do I owe this pleasure?” A smile rose up her lips when she heard his chuckle from the other side of the line. She giggled, settling straight on her chair. “Why are you calling, dear husband?”

He hummed. “I kind of like that name, dear wife. What you doing?”

“Nothing. I just finished seeing a client off.”

“A client.”

“Yes. We’re signing a deal with another company for the fashion show. I can already tell that this will be a success.” Excitement was laced in her voice as she spoke. “Everyone is doing a great job in making the perfect designs. I’m going to draw out some more designs before the end of today.”

“Why do I feel like you’re overworking yourself? You’re not disobeying me and joining in the work, are you?”

Elaine grinned. “I’m not. The employees are doing all the work as you wanted. I couldn’t even get to make my own dress.”

“Perhaps it’s not relevant.”

“It is. My dress has to be flawless. If I want to convince our viewers at the fashion show, I have to look flawless.”

She heard a shuffling sound from his side like he just sat on his chair. She could imagine him seated in his chair with both his long legs crossed on his table while he spoke to her. She already knew the position he likes being on most of the times.

“You look flawless always, doll. Effortlessly.”

A blush crept up her cheeks. “I won’t if my dress doesn’t fit.”

“Anything you wear looks good on you. Do you see yourself in the mirror. You’re perfect.”

Elaine’s ears grew red immediately at his words. She found herself blushing hard and pressing a hand to her mouth to muffle her giggles. If he called her to tell her sweet things and make the butterflies in her stomach swim madly, it was working. The butterflies in her stomach were on all joy at every breath of his.

“Is this why you called, Xavier?” She managed to make her voice sound unaffected.

“Why I called? I seem to have forgotten. Right. I sent you lunch.”

Her eyes grew wide.

“You what?”

Before she could hear his reply, she heard a knock on her office door and Beth walked in with a food box in her hand. “Hey,” she greeted, stepping toward her and dropping the box on the table.

“The delivery guy brought this. Heard it’s from your husband.”

Elaine nodded, bringing the box to her side. “Alright, thank you.”

Beth gestured with her hand, telling Elaine to make sure not to finish the food before she turned and stalled out of the office. Elaine cleared her throat, returning her attention to the man on the other side of the call.

“I’m alright, you know that. You didn’t need to send me lunch.”

“I needed to. How is it? Do you like it?”

She rolled her eyes. “I haven’t opened it yet.”

“Make sure you eat the food. I’ll come get you soon, okay?”

“Okay.”

The call went off. She dropped her phone back on the table and began unboxing the food, her legs jiggling in excitement as the aroma filled the air. She was surely going to devour it.

******

A few hours later, Xavier strolled into her office only to find her with her head down on the table, facing the side. Her eyes wire closed and her hands were on both side of her head on the table. Slowly, he walked toward her, stopping when he got to her table. He stared at the woman beneath him, her hair covering the side of her face.

He pushed the few strands of hair away and smiled. How could anyone look so pretty even when they’re asleep. He could watch her all day long. Her beauty was unmatched. He wasn’t lying a few hours away when he told her that she was perfect.

He meant it. His wife was perfect in and out and like he said, anything she wore would look good on her. Surely, she was the most gorgeous woman he’d seen in his years of living and gods lord, she was beginning to get to him after occupying his head. She was beginning to get deep into him, in the places he thought didn’t exist in him.

Feeling the unusualness around her, Elaine’s eyes fluttered open, coming in contact with his waist path. She frowned in confusion, trailing her eyes uo his body until they landed on his face. At that instance, she sprang up and sat up straight, wiping her eyes and mouth in case there were any trace of drool. She looked up at the man.

“He…hey,” she muttered. “When did you come?”

“Enough time to hear you mutter my name in your sleep.”

She gasped. “Th…that was a lie. I don’t sleep talk.”

“How would you know?”

“If I have, Beth would have told me about it a long while ago.”

“You slept with Beth?”

She rose from the chair quickly and clasped his mouth with her palm. What was he doing speaking such thing loudly. If he was heard, people might think something else.

“Keep your voice down. Are you dumb?”

“Answer me, doll.”

“She’s my fiend. Of course we’ve shared a bed before.”
She smacked him on the arm. What was he thinking?

“That better be the case. Let’s go.”

“Go where?”

“Home.”

“It’s not yet close time.”

He raised a brow. “We agreed on closing early, didn’t we? You exhausted yourself, doll.”

“I did not.”

“I caught you sleeping.”

She avoided his gaze.”It was all because of you, because of the food you sent me.” It was true. It was as if there was a sleeping drug in the food he sent her that after eating, she started to feel sleepy. “It made me sleep.”

“I know you, doll. You find every excuse to escape situations. Not this time.” Xavier placed a hand on her back and the other around the back of her knees and in a swift motion, he swept her off her feet.

“Now, I’ll do the walking.”
