Mental Stress
“I’m grieving and you’re asking me to fucking sign some silly papers? What is wrong with you.”
“It should be what is wrong with you. I understand that you’re not in the best condition now. But acting like this ain’t the solution to the problems at hand. You don’t think your company is functioning well without you, do you? We’re just mere employees and we can’t handle the company as well as you can.”
“No, you can.”
“You don’t want to see the company you spent fucking years building crumble because of this, right? You think your baby would want this for you if she was here? That she would want you to abandon everything and fall into depression? You have to get yourself back, Elaine.”
Elaine turned her back to Beth, her body trembling at the words that echoed in her ears again and again. After the death of her baby, nothing else mattered to her. Nothing in the world interested her nor did she have any zeal to run her company anymore. There was no motivation, and all she felt was emptiness. She no longer has any good reason to live and each time she thought about that, it only sent her into depression all over again.
“Leave, Beth. We’ll talk some other time.”
“I go nowhere, girl. There’s no way I’ll watch a good friend of mine fall into depression. That’s why. To get you out of your shell.”
Elaine turned to the side and side-look her friend. “What?”
“We’re going out. I mean, I’m taking you out of the hellhole of a house.”
“You..”
“Whether or not you agree.”
At that, she stormed into Elaine’s room and marched to the closet, she opened it and her eyes scanned through the few clothes and sweatpants that lay neatly in the closet. Since most of her belongings were still at Xavier’s mansion, she only had a few items.
Finally, Beth stepped outside once she picked a gray dress for Elaine but her eyes widened when they fell on Elaine who lay limply on the couch. She frowned and tapped her slightly.
“Elaine? Elaine, are you okay?”
Elaine shook her head slowly, her eight blurry and her head, lightheaded. She clutched her best friend’s hand.
“Are you okay? Have you been taking your medications?”
Her eyes skimmed through Elaine’s medicine bag at the other side of the room.
“Just… a…a few times.”
“Fuck.” Strings of curses flew from Beth’s lips and she quickly helped Elaine up, grabbed her bag, and headed to the door. “Hang in there, okay? I’m taking you to the hospital now.”
She supported Elaine out of the house and through the elevator that led to the last floor. Once they got to her car, she opened the front passenger seat door for her and helped her in before rounding the other side of the car and entering, quickly starting the car.
Elaine’s head settled on the window, her eyes looking outside as she tried to stabilize herself. Beth’s hands fell on her thighs as she swerved the car, overtaking the other cars and heading to the hospital at full speed. She knew that she needed not to waste a single time in getting Elaine to the hospital.
For someone who just had a miscarriage, they had to do anything in their power to make sure that she gets emergency treatment when needed.

“Mrs. Romano is suffering from mental stress and her body is simply just fighting to accommodate it,” the doctor announced, scribbling something in his note. “Everything else is fine except mentally. This is quite serious.”
Beth let go of the palm of Elaine who laid on the bed weakly, her eyes on the doctor as if trying to register all that he’d said in her head.
“What does that mean?”
“It simply means that Mrs Romano has to be watched from now on. Her blood pressure is high and this could lead to something else if it continues.”
“Okay, thank you, doctor.”
With a nod, the doctor stepped out of the room, leaving the two girls to themselves. Beth returned her gaze to Elaine and glared at her. “I told you, didn’t I? You’re going to kill yourself if you don’t stop all of these, best friend.”
“I…I can’t help it,” she forced out.
“You can. Only you can end this going on in your life right now. Did you hear what the doctor said? Your blood pressure is high, you’re going through emotional stress and I think you might slowly be sinking into depression. To stop this, I thought of a solution.”
“What solution?”
“You’re moving in with me.” Even before the doctor had announced the truth of Elaine’s blood pressure, she’d expected it. She’d expected the doctor to say it and now that he had, she couldn’t help but take the plan seriously. If Elaine was left alone, she might fall into depression and might do something that they both would regret.
“I’m moving in with you?” Even with her low voice, she managed to sound audible. “Why? Care to share?”
“It’s crystal clear. That way, I’ll be able to take care of you and make sure that you take your medications steadily. Does that answer your question? There is no room for opposition, Elaine. If you’re going to punish me later for forcing you into doing this, then feel free, but later. After you’re fine of course, so that we’ll be able to continue bantering from where we stopped.
“Fine! But just for a few weeks. I’ll stay for a few weeks until I get better.”
“Good fucking idea. By the way, did I tell you? He wants a meeting with you.”
Elaine frowned. “Who?”
“Fred. He’s been calling me nonstop for the past few weeks to ask about you. I even told him that you’re too busy to show up for a meeting but he still insisted that we set a meeting between you both. He wants to finalize a deal but I don’t buy that lie. I’m sure you don’t either, right?”
