Finding Out About The Kidnap
Acting as though nothing was wrong, Xavier guessed it would be the best decision. And that was exactly what he did. He stormed out of the study room immediately he heard of his mother’s arrival. Passing the servants a warning look, he walked to the living room, clearing his throat and fixing his appearance.
“Mother,” he called once he got to the sitting room, coming to stand before his mother. “What brings you here?”
The woman rose from the couch and stared at her son suspiciously, her eyes scanning the house. “You never asked me that? I came for a visit of course.”
“You know that you didn’t have to.” Xavier wiped his sweaty hands on his pants. If his mother knew that her pregnant daughter-in-law got kidnapped, hell would he let loose? She would be worried as hell and might not leave until she finds her daughter-in-law. No one wants the wrath of a soon-to-be grandmother.
“Of course, I have to. Why do I feel like something is off here?”
Xavier shrugged. He looked around, pretending to be surprised. “What is off? I can’t find anything abnormal.”
“Whatever. Anyway, where is my daughter-in-law? I brought her some supplements.”
“This is why you should call when next you’re coming for a visit.”
“What? Since when have you been thinking about this? Where is she?”
“She’s not here, mother. I’ll give you a call when she returns. You can leave now.”
The woman’s eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?”
“Elaine decided to see her mother.” He said so, looking away from his mother. Somehow, he knew that she wasn’t going to buy his lie. His mother was always the best at fishing out lies.
“I’m not convinced.”
“You have to be.”
“Say the truth, Xavier? Where is she? Is she hiding from me? I told her I’m not going to pamper her so much anymore.” She looked around the living room and the hallway for any trace of her daughter-in-law. The last time she was here, Eliane had made her feelings known to her. She wasn’t comfortable with her treating her like she was carrying an egg and not a human and she’s promised to make her less uncomfortable next time.
Perhaps she was shying away from her because of that?” The woman thought.
“That’s not it. I told you already.”
“I’ll find out for myself.”
Before Xavier could say anything or try to stop her. She hurriedly made her way to the stairs, climbing through the stairs and heading to the room the married couple shared. When she didn’t find her in any of the rooms upstairs, she made her way down the stairs but not without spotting the servants who seemed too suspicious to her. She walked to where Xavier stood with his fingers massaging the path between his brows.
“I told you she’s at the Rock mansion.”
“Firstly, I’m not that old that I’ll believe whatever comes out of your mouth. Secondly, I’m your mother, I raised you so I know when you’re lying. Thirdly, I know for a fact that Elaine isn’t on good terms with her family to go on a visit without you.” She for sure knew these things. Plus Xavier knowing the kind of family Elaine had wouldn’t leave his wife in their care all alone. He cared too much for her for that to happen.
“You know nothing.”
“Fourthly, the servants and everyone are acting suspicious. Don’t tell me…” The woman’s eyes grew wide, almost popping out of their sockets. She slumped on the couch while passing Xavier a devastated look. “Don’t tell me it’s what I’m thinking.”
“You’re right. But don’t worry, I’ll figure it out.”
“Tell me she didn’t get kidnapped?” The woman exclaimed.
“Mother, don’t stress yourself over this. I’ll sort it out.”
“Oh my god.” Her hands flew to her mouth, her shoulders trembling as she gazed into space in disbelief. “She’s pregnant, Xavier? How did this happen? What happened to your goddamn security?” He had a flock of security guards in his mansion. There were a lot yet they were unable to do anything.
“It’s a long story. Just go home. I’ll give you a call soon. Grace,” he summoned his housekeeper. “Make sure Madam Romano gets home safe and sound.”
“You can’t send me away just like that.”
He looked over to Grace. “Do your job.”
At that, he turned his back to her and made his way out of the living room, heading back into the study room.
“Did she leave?” Rigel made way for him.
“She would.”
Xavier returned behind the computer.
“That’s…”
“Leave, Rigel,” Xavier ordered.
“I think you need rest, Xavier. It’s been a whole fucking day.”
“I said leave.” Everything was finally getting to his head and he was becoming even angrier with each second that passed without his wife by his side.
Once Rigel hesitantly left the room, he continued with his work, tracing everywhere for his wife, and only after he became lightheaded did he finally rest his head on his desk and give in to his body’s cravings for rest.
The next day came and another search began. Xavier was determined not to back down until he found her. After hours of work, he finally found a clue, and the moment he did, he sprang up from the chair and stormed outside the study room.
“I found a clue. You know what to do.”
He spoke to Rigel who immediately informed the other men through the security phone.
Xavier climbed the stairs to the room that he shared with his wife and once he got there, he pushed the door open and strode into the walk-in closet. He pushed Elaine’s dressing mirror out of place and placed his hand on the wall behind It.
It was no ordinary wall as it parted in the mirror, revealing a small space filled with weapons, well hidden. He grabbed two pistols and placed his hand on the wall again, watching as it slid close.
