Why Can’t We Share A Hug?

Ria stormed into the Rock mansion with Emily, slumping on the couch as Emily followed behind her.

“You shouldn’t have said all of those to her. It was kind of too harsh,” Emily scolded. “That was a sensitive topic.”

“Sensitive? I only just told the truth. Besides, you’re starting to become softhearted again. You know what happened the last time. She caused us to lose our father again.” She pulled the hem of her maxi gown and brought the bottoms to her thighs.

“Even at that. She just lost her baby. You’re going to be a mom soon, you should know how sensitive that is.”

“Not my problem.”

“At least feel a little bit of remorse, Ria. You went out of the script. We went there to only mock her about returning to her apartment, not to insult her about losing her child. You went totally out of the script and it’s not cool at all.”

Ria sprang up from the chair to challenge her sister. “Now you’re going to scold me because of the lowlife?”

“I’m just trying to make you see reasons with me. This shouldn’t repeat itself next time,” Emily warned.

“And if it does.”

“Don’t forget you’ve not given birth yet. Anything could happen.”

“Oh, now I understand. You’re casting an evil eye on my baby, huh? Now I get it.” She leaned closer. “You’re just a jealous ass bitch. I hope you know.”

At that, she swiveled around and took the stairs, heading toward her room where her husband was. Once she got in, she grabbed Jimmy’s hand.

“Let’s leave, immediately. I can’t stand this place.”

“What’s wrong?”

“I said, let’s leave.”

She pulled him out of the room down the stairs and out of the mansion to their car.

“Who angered you again? What is wrong.”

“Nothing. Let’s just go. Didn’t you say you want to have a drink in a newly opened bar? Let’s go there.”

Jimmy started the car and drove out of the Rock mansion.

“You know you’re pregnant. You can’t drink.”

“I’ll take soft drinks.”

“Fine.”

In less than fifteen minutes, the couple arrived at the club, their hands around each other as they made their way into the club, passing the clubgoers, and heading to the bar. They soon got to the bar and took their seats.

“A glass of vodka and a glass of soft drink for my wife here,” Jimmy ordered the bartender.

Once their orders came in, Ria couldn’t help but eye the vodka that Jimmy brought to his lips, taking a sip at a time. When had it been since she last had a taste of alcoholic drink? She missed it like mad and the soft drink? She glared at it in disgust. She’d been having too much of it for the past few months and truly, she was way tired of it.

“You didn’t tell me about your meeting with Elaine. How did it go?”

“Oh.” Ria frowned at his question about Elaine but she still replied. “Our meeting with her went pretty well. We told you she returned to her apartment right?”

“Yeah, heard that before.”

“Not on that, she lost her pregnancy too.” Ria burst into low laughter, her head thrown backward.

Jimmy gasped, his eyes wide. “Really? Did she really lose her pregnancy?”

“That’s right. I saw it with my own eyes, her tummy was flat and she looked miserable as hell. Like she couldn’t wait for the grim reaper to visit her soon.” She twirled the soft drink in her hand. “I must say that today was one of my favorite days. I got to see her shed those lousy tears of hers after I mocked her about losing her baby.”

“Aww. But that’s a little too harsh, you know.”

She rolled her eyes. “You too? Now I’m really pissed.”

“It’s not like that.”

“Then what?” She snapped. “Don’t tell me you still like her.”

“Lower your voice. The fuck is wrong with you. I don’t like her and you know that, hmm? Come here.” He rose from his chair and drew closer to her, snaking his hand around her waist. “You look gorgeous, you know that right? I want to kiss you senseless.”

His lips rose down her neck and when he tried to pull her closer to him, she pushed him away and stepped backward.
“Stop it.”

Jimmy threw his hand through his hair at the interrupted making-out session that he was about to have with her and before he knew it, he let his anger take over him. “The fuck you let me touch you no more?” He inquired.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, why the fuck you don’t let me touch you anymore. When I try to touch you, you move away from me. For the past few months, you haven't even let me share a hug with you. Did you forget that we’re married?”

“It’s for the safety of the baby.”

“Sharing a hug now hurts.”

“It might escalate. There are only a few months remaining. Why are you complaining now?”

“There is only so much that a man like myself can take. In fact, just forget it. I’m done here.”

At that, he turned around and started making his way out of the club, snaking past the dancers on the stage. In no time, he was out of the building and a few meters away from the car. Ria raced after him.

“Jimmy, Jimmy,” she called right before he could enter the car.

“What do you want now?”

“What kind of man leaves their pregnant wife in a place filled with strangers? What the fuck?”

“Pregnant wife, that won’t let her husband share even a hug? From the books I read about pregnancy, I heard that pregnant women are fond of letting their husbands close to them for support. I wonder why your case is so different.”

“Are you doubting me?”

“I’m not. I’m just trying to say that if I don't get what I want from you, I can get it outside.”
The moment the words left his lips, her palm collided with his cheek in a tight slap even before she knew it. She only realized and tried to fix the situation with a choking cry.

“I’m pregnant and you’re going to look for other women to satisfy you?” She cried, her tears beginning to stream down her cheek profusely, her chest heaving up and down. “I’m not enough for you, I’m never enough.”

The anger in Jimmy quickly dissipated at the thin sobs that broke out from her lips and the pitiful look that she gave. He immediately stepped forward and placed his hands on her shoulders.

“You’re very okay to me. You’re enough.”

“If I am, you wouldn’t think of being with anyone else.”

“I’m sorry for being rude.‘it’s you that I want, it’s you that I love, hmm.” He wiped her tears. “Don’t cry anymore. Come, let’s go in again. I’m sorry.”
