Very Ugly When You Lie, Doll

George’s face morphed into something else at the mention of Elaine’s husband but he quickly masked it up before anyone could notice. He stepped backward, giving her more space to stand on. “I’m sad that you’re leaving so soon.”

“I’m sorry. We can meet and have drinks some other time. How about that?”

“Is that a promise, Elaine?”

She sighed.
“Fine. You can give me a text. I’ll think about it. For now, I should leave.”

She picked out some dollar notes from her purse and slapped it on the bar table. But George pushed it back to her. “You’re in my bar. Bills on me.”

“Aww,” Beth couldn’t help but fawn over his act. “You’re quite the gentleman, aren’t you? Does that mean that we can come here for free drinks if we want?”

Elaine nudged her friend again. “We should just leave. Come on, girl.”

“I should see both ladies out.”

Like the gentleman that he was, he followed slowly behind them until they got out of the bar, stepping out to the roadside where their car was parked. Once they got to their car, Elaine swiveled around to George. “I guess we have to say goodbye here. Thanks for the drink by the way.”

“My pleasure. I’ll wait for our next meeting. I hope we get to sit and talk next time.”

“Sure.” Just before Elaine could get into the driver’s seat of her car, her eyes caught sight of a familiar Bentley parked at the other side of the road and a familiar figure storming across the road toward them. Shit, she groaned in her head before letting out a relieved sigh as George turned around and walked back into his bar.

She pushed a strand of hair behind her ears and forced a smile as Xavier stepped before her, his eyes scanning the place as if in search of something. When he didn’t find what he was searching for, he returned his gaze to her.

“Xavier, what are you doing here? Are you stalking me now?”

“I fucking texted. I only just traced your phone when I didn’t get a reply.”

“It’s been just a few minutes.”

“Enough for you to get into trouble. You’re done for the evening?” She thanked her stars that George left before Xavier could see him. She didn’t want to explain so much today.

She bobbed her hand up and down to answer his question. “We should leave, no? Or do you have something else to do?”

“Of course not.” She looked behind her for Beth only to find the girl rolling her eyes at them.

“I get it, I get it,” she whined. “You’re leaving me for this grumpy man again. All the time.” Goodness, it felt good to call him names. On a normal day, without Elaine standing with her, she wouldn’t dare call him anything other than his official name, and with respect too. But she knew that he wouldn’t do anything to hurt her as hurting her would mean hurting the woman who was his wife- everyone was aware of how much he dotes on her.

“You have to understand, Beth. I’ll give you a call when I get home, okay? You can take the car.”

“Until I like to return it, right?”

To compensate her friend, Elaine nodded. “Bye, girl. Make sure to drop a call if you get home first.”

Beth nodded her head, got into the car, and drove off, leaving Elaine standing together with Xavier. She locked her hand around his arms and pulled him to her side, peering up at him. “I missed you. Did you miss me too?”

He grunted. “This isn’t going to make me forget what I just saw.”

She immediately pulled away from him and scratched the back of her neck, looking away from him. “What do you mean?”

“Didn’t even try to deny it.”

“I’m not denying anything.” She swallowed at his piercing gaze. “I don’t even know what you’re talking about.”

A chuckle escaped Xavier’s lips. He shook his head and held her wrist, beginning to lead her past the cars on the road to his car parked at the other side. He opened the car’s door for her and led her in before walking around to get into the driver’s seat.

“You do know that you look very ugly when you lie, doll, right?” He spoke as he wore his seatbelt.

“What? I always look pretty. You said that yourself.”

“Well, in this case. You look ugly when you lie. Your little new friend must mean a lot to you, right? You’re even covering up for him.”

Her lips twitched. “Or you should stop trying to pick a fight with just anyone. We met by coincidence, okay?”

“You think that I care? Just don’t let me get to him. I’ll break his goddamn bones again.”

“Again? What do you mean?”

“Forget it.” He started the car, driving out for the premises and heading to their mansion. “Why were you at the bar? You reek of alcohol.”

“To celebrate. Wait, I haven’t told you yet.” She leaned away from the chair and angled her body to face Xavier. He should’ve been the first person to have found out about the news of Ria’s pregnancy.

“Told me what?”

“About Ria. Ria is not pregnant. She’s been deceiving us about her pregnancy all this while. She even used it to get out of the police after she tried to murder me. I’m so glad that her true color has been shown to the entire family.”

“I heard. They’re one pain in the ass. I’ll make sure that she goes back to the place that she dreads the most and spends at least ten years there.”

“Do you think she would come back to her senses if Emily and I tried to talk to her? She’s our sister and we all think that she should bring Ria back on track again. She’s still family.”

His hands closed around the steering wheel so tight that his knuckles almost grew white. “Make sure not to go close to her. Remember what happened the last time you got close to a family member that we don’t trust.”
