Mother Had A Heart Attack

“You’re going to avoid them.” Xavier said once they got into the car, his body trembling in anger and frustration. “Margaret, Helen, Amar, my father, avoid them all. You’re going to turn your back and walk in a different direction when you see anyone from my family other than mother and grandmother, do you hear me?”

“What’s going on, Xavier?”

“Do you hear me?”

“I heard you. Margaret said that it was a mistake.” Elaine said.

“She lied? What don’t you get?”

“We should see it from the other side, too. What if it was a mistake and we’re all blaming her for it. Besides, it was my fault for not noticing that there were peanuts in the cake and rejecting it.”

“And you didn’t notice there was peanut butter in every snack in there?”

Her eyes widened but she managed to handle her surprise, standing with whatever she said before. “Even though. She might have meant no harm.”

Xavier rolled his eyes, his gaze on her while his fist clenched the steering wheel tightly. Only he knew the kind of person Margaret was and how she could go through any lengths to get what she wanted. Whatever she said about forgiveness and hatred, all of that bulshit. To him, she was pretending and meant none of it from the heart, she wanted to get him to let his guard down before striking. Too bad for her, he didn’t buy her words. He knew the woman like the back of his palm.

“Whether she meant harm or not, you better walk in a different direction from her. You don’t want to get me angry.”

Elaine’s shoulder slumped. “Fine.” She wondered what was the feud between Xavier and his sister and why they never got along. Why do they hate each other so much? Well, it wasn’t a big deal to stay away from her, after all, she didn’t like her either. They just didn’t click. Maybe staying away from her was the right thing to do even though she didn’t want to make enemies with any member of Xavier’s family.

“Good. You okay?” He finally asked.

“Ye…yes. I’m okay.” She avoided his gaze.

“Why aren’t you looking at me? I’m speaking to you.”

She fisted a handful of her dress, a blush creeping up her cheeks from the way he stared at her. “Perhaps my eyes too pretty for you to stare at today?”

He chuckled, the anger he had in him immediately dissipating. “Tell me more.”

“Let’s just go, okay”

“No. You made me interested. I want to hear more, hmm?”

She bit her bottom lips.

“I’m tired. An..and sleepy too.” She wanted him to tear his gaze off her, the looks that made her conscious of her environment. If he kept staring at her like that, she wouldn’t be able to stop herself from throwing herself at him.

“Alright, let’s leave.”

He leaned closer to her, his body raising a bit to her side and his face drawing closer to her. Her heart immediately got wild and her eyes fluttered shut. She could feel his breath fan her face, her lips instinctively parting to await his lips on them.

But after a few seconds of waiting, she heard him chuckle before her seatbelt buckled around her. Her eyes slowly opened to stare at him, his face still close to hers.

“I…I wasn’t waiting f…for a kiss,” she stuttered, her entire face red in embarrassment. She cursed him in her mind. He knew what he was doing. How dare he mocks close to her and leave her hanging.

“I didn’t say anything about kissing did I?”

“Of…of course you didn’t.”

“Or you want it.”

“I don’t.” She dead panned. “Move away.”

But he didn’t. As their eyes locked, he dipped his head down and took her lips in his, engaging in a slow passionate kiss with her. She parted her lips, giving him entrance into her mouth. A few seconds later and the intensity of the kiss increased, Xavier angled her head to the side to get a better entrance into her mouth.

A blaring sound from Elaine’s bag broke them apart. Xavier immediately returned to his seat. Elaine’s hands shook as she dug through her bag, fishing out her phone, her eyes widening at the caller ID. Emily? Why on earth was Emily calling her? What exactly does she want? She wondered. She took a deep breath, contemplating whether or not to pick the call from her sister and after a brief moment of contemplation, she pressed on the green button and brought the phone closer to her ears.

“Elaine, Elaine, there is an emergency.” Elaine shifted on her seat at Emily’s hurried words, her breath rough and fast.

“What is wrong? What emergency?”

“Mo…mother, mother…”

Elaine’s heart raced faster. “What happened to mother? What’s wrong, Em?”

“Mother had a heart attack. Come to the hospital, quickly.”

Elaine’s eyes grew wide, her eyes snapping to Xavier who’d heard the conversation. He quickly started the car and drove out of the Romano mansion at speed. Once the car stopped in front of the hospital, Elaine ran out, rushing into the hospital, to the desk of the receptionist.

“Bianca Rock, where is she?” Her breaths were fast and loud.

“At the emergency ro…”

Without waiting for the desk woman’s words, she raced toward the Emergency Room, cocking her head left and right for any trace of her sisters. She sighted them from afar, her legs racing toward the Emergency Room. Just before she could get close to the door, Ria suddenly sprang up from the bench she’d been sitting on and blocked her path, her arms spread wide.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“Where’s mother?” She tried again, to push past Ria but she swiftly blocked her path yet again.

“Where do you think you’re going after causing trouble? You think you deserve to watch mother fight for her life in the ER?”

“What are you saying Ria, get out of my way.” She resisted the urge to push her sister out of her way.
