The moment they got out of the elevator that led to the top floor, Elaine was surprised to see Sonia already waiting for them. She pushed herself from the wall and rushed to Xavier the moment the elevator door pinged open.
“Mr Romano, you’re here,” she stood by his side, her finger swiping through the file in her hand. Elaine couldn’t help but scoff as she accessed the woman’s clothing. Like always, she was dressed in a short tight skirt, a skimpy blouse that pushed her full boobs upward, and a loafer shoe. “I was just about to give you a call in your absence. I’ll inform you of your schedule now. You have a meeting with the CEO of RM by two and another by three. Mr Diego’s booked appointment is thirty minutes from now. What do you want me to make? Tea or coffee?”
Xavier and Elaine walked into his office with the woman trailing behind them, waiting for his answer. “Cancel all, Sonia.”
“What?”
“You heard me. Postpone the meetings. I’m in no mood to see anyone else, right now. Do you hear me?”
“Yes sir.”
“I’m not going to take it that you see my wife beside me. She’s as much of your boss as I am. Don’t make me repeat myself.”
Her head lowered. “Forgive me, sir. She cocked her head to the side to stare at Elaine. “I’m sorry for not acknowledging you, Mrs Romano. My apologies.”
“It’s fine. You can leave now.”
Sonia opened her mouth to say something but as Xavier stopped, she immediately clamped her mouth shut and swiveled around, heading toward the door. Xavier’s voice resounded from behind just before she could get to the door. “And next time, make sure not to leave your desk during work time.”
Her legs shook as she scrambled out of the office, letting out an inaudible curse as she returned to her desk, her fist clenched and her eyes burning in anger.
Inside the office, Elaine walked to Xavier’s table and sat on it, facing his chair. Her eyes widened as they fell on a box of cookies. She quickly grabbed it and brought it to her face. “What? How did this get here?”
Xavier shrugged. “I was going to bring it home but since you’re already here, you can have it.”
“This cookie,” she examined the box, turning it from side to side. She gasped when she realized it. “Don’t tell me this is from where I’m thinking. Is it the same cookie that they advertise on TV? The one with the most creamy taste in the world?”
“It is. Do you like it?”
“Xavier, you got a cookie all the way from London? Oh my goodness.” She opened the box and carefully took a cookie from the box, bringing it to her lips. Elaine moaned as the delicious taste washed over her taste buds. She stared at Xavier with wide eyes. “This is really from London?”
“When I saw it on TV, I thought of you. Your skin in particular. Creamy and delicious as fuck.” He stepped to his chair and settled on it, leaned back on the chair, and crossed his legs together.
A blush immediately crept up her cheek
“Stop being so romantic. You’re making my cheek hurt from blushing too much.”
“Then I guess I’ll keep making them hurt for as long as I love. From smoking of course.”
“How did you think to get me this cookie when she hated the one Beth got for me? The one she invested her all in.”
“That was then. I figured out how much you like cookies. Don’t worry about peanuts too. I made sure there were no peanuts in it.”
She pulled away from the table and leaped into Xavier’s thighs, wrapping her arms around his neck and peppering his face with kisses. “You’re the best, Xavier. What can I do without you? Nothing, I know.”
“You won’t have to be without me. I love you, Elaine Romano.”
“I love you more.”
He turned her around on his thighs so that her back was to his chest and he buried his head on her neck, sniffing the scent that sent his mind haywire. “You’re not going to work? Your new secretary sounded like you have a lot of work to do,” Elaine asked as she propped a bite of cookie into her mouth, crushing it with her teeth.
“You’re more important. I want to work with you around me.”
He pulled her closer by the waist with one hand and with the other, he began working on his computer but all the while peppering kisses on her neck and collarbone.
After a while of silence between them, Elaine spoke again. “I met him again.”
Xavier stiffened, his fingers coming to a stop. “Who did you meet, doll?”
“The guy who saved me from the sedan that day. What was his name again? Right, George. I met with him again and he saved me a second time. Funny how I only meet him when I’m in need of some sort of help.”
“What did he help you with this time?” Xavier’s voice was rough and restrained as he resisted the urge to yell. His hands loosened around her waist and he clamped his eyes shut in a futile attempt to control the anger raging in him. “I fucking asked you to stay away from him.
“It was a coincidence. He helped me when my car broke down in the middle of nowhere.” She couldn't keep it from him. “Trust me this time, Xavier. He’s not as it seems. He's helped me twice and we should be grateful to him instead of accusing him of having ulterior motives.”
