Tell Me It’s Not True

The car swerved past the other cars, racing through the road in an attempt to get to the hospital faster. In less than ten minutes, the car stopped in front of the hospital’s building and wasting Jo further time, Xavier climbed out of the car with Elaine in his arms and placed her on the waiting stretcher and assisted the nurses in wheeling her to the emergency room.

“You have to stay outside, Mr. Romano.” The nurses stopped him from stepping into the emergency room with them.

Xavier stepped backward, slamming his back on the wall and he weaved his hand through his hair in frustration while the word ‘fuck, fuck, fuck,’ repeated in his head over and over again. If he’d arrived faster or if he’d shot Albeit like he did with the other men, she wouldn’t be in such a state, he thought.

He’d let him be for the fact that he was Elaine’s father and goodness, it came out to be a huge mistake. And the worst mistake was not finishing him off after he pushed his wife down the stairs. He hadn’t expected it to happen at all and so, he silent get prepared to shoot and when he did shoot, he missed the man’s head and ended up shooting him in his shoulder and leg instead.

It was depressing as fuck.

“Boss.” He turned his head to the side when he saw Rigel running toward him. “Is the madam alright?” He asked once he got to him.

“Fuck, I don’t know.”

Rigel’s eyes widened when they fell on Xavier’s shoulder. He immediately pulled him to sit on the waiting bench in front of the ER.

“Damn, you got shot. You should get treatment immediately. You’re bleeding profusely.”

Xavier shrugged his hand away from him. “I’m fine. I’m good here.”

“No, you’re not. Do you see the blood? Fuck, come on, if you loose more blood, it would get worse.”

Despite his blurry eyes and lightheadedness from bleeding so much, he still shook his head, rejecting Rigel’s suggestion. Just before Rigel could try and convince him again, the door of the ER opened and a female doctor stepped out. Xavier immediately shot out from the chair.

“How’s my wife?” He asked, a hint of urgency in his voice. His eyes darkened as the doctor’s face fell.

“I’m sorry.”

“You’re sorry what?” He almost ignored the fact that the doctor was a woman, his hands almost shot out to wrap around the woman’s neck as he knew that the words that would drop out next would be heart shattering.

“I’m sorry, we tried all we could. We couldn’t save the baby. Your wife had a miscarriage.”

Even though he’d expected the words, it still sent him kneeling on the floor, his heart on both sides of his head. For the first time in years, he felt a few droplets of tears stream down his cheek, the pain in his heart twisting knots in his chest.

“And the lady?” Rigel asked, his voice strained as if trying to control his tears. “Is she alright?”

“We can’t say yet. She’s stable for now but we’ll still watch over her for the next 48 hours or more. If she doesn’t wake up…”

“Don’t say if. Do whatever it takes to make sure she’s fine,” Rigel interrupted. When his eyes fell on Xaveir again, he wuickly rushed to his side and tired to hold him from falling. He’d lost a lot of blood.

With a yell, he called on the nurses who quickly rushed to their side and helped Xavier into a room, immediately starting treatment for his wound.

The beeping sound of a machine was the first sound that Elaine picked when she finally snapped back into consciousness. Slowly, her eyes fluttered open to stare at the white ceiling above her head. She first caught sight of the chandelier and then her eyes moved to the beeping machine beside her.

A frown settled in her forehead at the smell that assaulted her nose, one that seemed familiar and unpleasant to her. How did she get to the hospital? When did she got here and why was there no one around her? Those questions echoed in her mind over and over again until the answers slowly started flitting in.

The memories started filling her head and she’s found herself gasping for air. She could clearly remember what got her into the hospital, the whole kidnap, her father’s knife in her neck and how he’d pushed her down the stairs. She remembered it.

She managed to love her hand to her tummy and telling the flat surface instead of the usual bump that she’d gotten used to, she gasped. Where did her baby go? It can’t be right?

Like she suddenly became energetic, she pushed herself to sit up on the bed, her hand roaming around her tummy as if in search for the bump.

A choked cry escaped her lips as reality dawned on her. She shook her head, not wanting to believe that it was actually what she was thinking it was, her eyes brewing red in tears.

The door pushed open and a middle aged lady made her way in.

“Mrs. Romano, you’re awake after two days. Oh, thank goodness.” She rushed to her and placed her hand on her forehead, checking her temperature. “Do you feel any discomfort anywhere? Are you fine.”

Elaine stared at the woman with teary eyes. “Tell me it’s not true. Where is my baby? Don’t tell me it’s what I’m thinking.”

She waited for the nurse to tell her what she wanted to hear, to tell her that her baby was sound and healthy and that there was still a bump. She waited and when she only saw the woman’s head fall and he’d expression turned sour, she knew that she was not going to hear those words that she so desesperately wanted and the realization forced a chilling cry out of her lips.

“No. No, please.” Her tiny cries turned into loud sobs and before she knew it, her cries began echoing in the premises.
