A Boy
“Do you think it's a boy too?” Elaine cocked her head to the side, staring at the man behind the wheel. They were on their way to the hospital, for the doctor’s appointment. Xavier had insisted on going with her. According to him, if they were going to learn about their baby’s gender, then he must be there.
She couldn't stop him, after all, she wanted him to accompany her too.
“Nah, I think it's a girl,” Xavier disagreed.
“A girl? Why do you think so? I'm the one carrying the baby so I tell you, it's a boy.”
They have been arguing over this topic for the past weeks. Three weeks have passed since the week she planned to have her fashion show. Well, as her baby would have it, she fell sick some weeks back and had pushed the date of the fashion show three weeks forward.
It was now convenient for her as she would finally be having the most awaited show in the city in two days.
“I'm the father, so I think it's a girl.”
Her lips twitched. She usually heard girls were messy and attention-seeking. It was her first time being a mom and she couldn't help but get nervous at the thought of not knowing how to handle a baby.
But as Xavier always says, he was there for her, right?
“Whatever. I can't wait to find out, anyway.”
Finally, the car rolled into the parking lot of the hospital and Xavier immediately climbed out of the car, rounding it to get to her side of the car which he opened.
“Thank you,” she whispered and slowly climbed down. Being four months pregnant and at the beginning of her second trimester was no joke at all, no one warned her about it.
Her body was three times heavier and she found it hard to carry herself about these days. No one warned her that pregnancy would be so hard that she would be unable to take steps without stopping midway to pant for air.
With his hand on her waist, Xavier led her into the hospital, getting the go-ahead from the receptionist and they stepped into their doctor’s office.
“Welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Romano, please take a seat.” The doctor stood up to greet them, offering them a handshake each.
“Thank you, doctor,” Elaine took her hands.
“You're glowing, Mrs Romano. I can tell that your baby is alright. Please come with me.”
The woman led them to the small bed at the side of the office and she signaled Elaine to lay on it. She did as she asked and once she was settled and Xavier was standing beside her, the doctor raised her blouse and poured a cold liquid on her belly. She flinched.
The doctor placed the ultrasound machine on her stomach and gestured for them to look at the small TV-like screen on the opposite wall. Elaine gasped, staring back at the doctor for an explanation.
“Do you hear the baby’s heartbeat?”
Her mouth fell open. “Is it the baby’s heartbeat we are hearing?”
The doctor nodded in all smiles. Elaine’s hands clutched Xavier’s palms beside her, emotions immediately washing over her and she found herself holding back her tears. The faint sound of heartbeat filled her ears and heart and she swore that she would remember the sound for as long as she lived.
“Xavier you hear that?”
Xavier nodded his attention to the screen. “What is that on the screen?”
The doctor laughed. “Oh, that's the baby.”
“The baby?”
“The baby?”
The couple exclaimed in unison, their gazes fixated on the fetus on the screen. The doctor moved the ultrasound on her stomach and it revealed a different part of the baby.
“Here comes the result. Congratulations to you both, you're having a girl.”
Elaine squealed in excitement while Xavier let out a laugh. Although she'd said that she wanted a boy, she knew that she would love the baby regardless and was only scared and the thought of having a girl excites her. She wrapped her hand around Xavier's arms, side-hugging him while laughing. It was a happy moment.
“Your baby is healthy for now, Mrs Romano. You've taken care of the baby and have avoided further complications. But keep in mind that it has to remain so as a little complication might make the inevitable happen.”
“That is not going to happen,” Xavier cut the doctor shut. Not when he'd sworn to protect his woman and daughter with everything in him. The sight of the family he was building made his heart flutter. He was finally feeling something in his numb heart again.
“It's a girl,” Elaine couldn't stop squealing. “A baby girl.”
Before she knew it, her laughter turned to tears of joy. Her tears streamed down her cheek with each second that passed as she stared at the screen. Her baby was beginning to form. It was so cute and small that she wished she could hold it in her hands sooner. She wanted to have the baby girl in her arms as they were speaking.
And she swore with her life to protect the baby.
Her tears continued streaming down her cheek, her sobs filling the once-silent room.
“What's wrong, doll? Why are you crying?” Xavier hugged her to himself, her head buried in his chest.
“I…I can't stop crying. I'm so ha…happy.”
“I am too. We're having a princess.”
Elaine nodded.
“The baby looks so cute. It's not even out yet. Look at it.”
“She'll look cute of course. She's inheriting our genes. I can't wait to have her in our arms.”
“Me too.”
The doctor went ahead to print out the ultrasound photos and handed a copy to them. Elaine’s emotion was all over the place and she couldn't stop herself from shedding tears at every look at the pictures.
She'd come this far and surely she would go extra lengths for her baby, protecting it with everything in her. They say pregnancy is hard but the results is worth it!
