The Drama

“If you're not embarrassed by my family’s behavior,” Bianca muttered, her head lowered in embarrassment. “I hope you’ll come back for another gathering some other time. Hopefully, this time there won’t be embarrassing people.”

From the displeased look on the man’s face when the drama unfolded before him, she could tell he would do anything to not be at their house again. He was disappointed.

“I’ll think about it, Mrs Rock.”

Her eyes darted to Elaine.

“Me too, mother. After everything that happened, I don’t think we’ll make it some other time.”

“Please think about it. Goodbye.”

Elaine smiled at her mother for the last time before entering the backseat of the waiting car, Xavier after her. Once their car drove out of the mansion, she breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, she was out of the place that threatened to take her life. Looking over to Xavier, she crossed her hands under her chest.

“You didn’t have to drag me out of there like a kid,” she spat. Every little thing annoys her these days. The breath of her cousins at the Rock mansion, their moans when they fuck, the smell of Xavier’s cigar at night, every little thing adds to her anger. Must be the pregnancy hormones.

“Why? We had to leave.”

“I wasn’t done. Besides our luggage…”

“On its way to our house. Any other reasons?”

“The drama. I wasn’t done watching my family make a fool out of themselves. It was only just getting spicier.”

“You want to go back?” Without lifting his head from his stupid tablet as Elaine always calls it, he asked.

“I don’t want to. I’m Just saying, in case of next time. I prefer watching dramas rather than participating in their making.”

“So you could learn from them? Want to be among the husbands snatching women?”

Her frown deepened in disgust at his words. She would rather die than become something like Diana and the likes of her. Sleeping around wasn’t something she found funny. Who goes around fucking their husband's cousin without an ounce of remorse. Those women were something else.

“That wasn’t funny.” She looked away from him.

Xavier grunted. “I need to wash my eyes and erase the memory of your family from my head. How the fuck you managed to be with them for years?

She threw her head backward and burst into laughter. If there was anything she enjoyed at the gathering, it was Xavier getting irritated either by the dramas or by her cousins overbearing attitudes. She warned him not to accept the invitation, but he was being ‘Mr keep to my word.’

“Not funny, doll.”

“Very funny, trust me. I told you that my family is different from other families. You wanted to see it for yourself. How was it?”

“Pretty messed up. Bunch of snitches.”

“Point of correction, den of snitches.”

He shook his head and returned his attention to his tablet, scrolling through the stock market and accessing the charts.

The rest of the ride went in silence.

Finally, the car pulled over in the parking lot of Xavier’s mansion. Without waiting for a second, she opened her side of the car and hurriedly made her way into the house.

“Careful doll,” Xavier warned behind her when she almost tripled over.

She was eager to breathe in the scent of her home again. Right, after she left for the Rock mansion, she finally realized where her true home was. At Xavier’s mansion, nowhere else. It was the only place she considered home.

“Welcome, Mrs Romano,” Grace greeted just as she stepped into the house.

“Hey Grace, I missed you. How have you been?”

“I’ve been doing alright, thanks for your concern.” She lowered her head.

As Elaine made her way into the living room, her eyes immediately caught sight of the small delivery box on top of the middle table.

“There’s a delivery?”

“Yes ma’am,” Grace replied beside her. “For you.”

“For me? I didn’t order anything.” It was clearly from a designer shop. Making her way toward the box, she loosened the ribbon and opened it, the sight of a luxurious gown caused her to gasp.

“Omo.” She carefully unfolded the dress, mouth wide open at its expensive feel in her hands. By the side of the box was a pair of black shoes and a designer bag. Another luxury to add to her wardrobe. But who was it from? Perhaps Xavier?

Her intuition was proved right when she turned around to find Xavier staring at her with his hands buried in his pocket.

“You got me these?” It was more like a statement than a question.

He took steps closer to where she stood with Grace. “We’re having a party in two days?”

“What party?”

“The company’s anniversary.”

She nodded. “You didn’t have to buy me a new dress. These probably cost a lot.” She stared at the black ankle-length dress, the diamonds embroidered on it sparkling just like its price.

“Money is no problem to me, Doll.”

Her lips twitched. “I guess so.” After all, she spent more at the all that day. Xavier Romano had no problem spending money.

Just then her stomach rumbled, her head whipping to the side to stare at Grace. She didn’t have anything to eat before leaving the Rock mansion, after all, they ruined breakfast with their ill characters.

Xavier raised the box Bianca had handed him before they left. “I guess this is food?”

“Right. We should set it out immediately.”

She took the box from him, heading toward the dining room and unboxing it, her stomach rumbling further at the aroma of the food.

Her mother wasn’t so cruel to her after all. She packed all her favorites.
