I Love You
“I don’t. This is happening all of a sudden. I have a condition,” Elaine suddenly blurted out. “I’ll forget about the divorce totally if my condition is met.”
“Anything. I’d do anything. I care about you.”
“What if care is not enough, Xavier?” Care was never enough.
“What do you want, doll?”
She took a deep breath, knowing fully well that the words she was about to say next might break or make them. Her legs trembled slightly and breaking her gaze away from him, she finally mustered up the courage to speak. “I…I’ll forget the divorce if you promise to love me, if you promise that you’ll at least try to love me, if not now, someday. If you promise me that, I’ll forget about the divorce.”
The silence that followed after her request was piercing and soul-shattering. With each second that passed with his silence, she felt her heart dropping to the floor and washing away with the water. Her eyes burned intensely as she blinked back the tears that already pooled in her eyes, her fingers clenching into a fist.
“It…It’s fine. Forget that.”
“There’s no need for that promise, doll.” He stepped forward and cradled her head in his palm, staring at her with those eyes that were almost enough to make her melt. “I don’t need to make that promise. My body, my heart and if you want, my life belongs to you already. I have no clue when it started but I’ve been a living dead since your absence and another day away from you would leave me crazy. The lack of you has stripped my world of color and made me realize just how much light you bring to my world. Perhaps there has been love since I first set my eyes on you when Jimmy brought you home but I knew since then that I needed to make you mine. It might not be a healthy behavior but it is all I have and my heart is yours to do as you choose.”
Elaine’s eyes immediately blurred as tears welled up in her eyes. She gazed at him with teary eyes at each word that he let out, her heart thumping in her heart so hard that she could hear it even with the flow of the shower. Xavier loves her! She chanted in her head again and again until the only thing she could think about was his words.
All these while that she’d been in love with him, he loved her back too. It wasn’t an unrequited love that they had. There was love between them. The truth is that she anticipated this moment day by day and now that it was finally here, she didn’t know how to react to it. Because before she knew it, the tears that she’d been holding finally burst out, her sobs echoing in the shower room.
“Don’t, baby.” Xavier stroked her cheek, her skin igniting at the soft touch of his. “What I’m promising is never to make you cry except while you’re underneath me again. I promise to make sure you have no reason to cry anymore, all your tears would be tears of joy from now on. Do you understand?”
She nodded immediately and wrapped her hand around Xavier’s waist, pressing her head into his chest while he patted her hair lovingly and kissed the top of her head.
“I…I love you too,” she cried. “I love you with everything in me. All…all these while I missed you…you so much.” She began hiccuping. “I don’t know how it started also but I know that I can't live without you. These past few weeks have been so depressing.”
He patted her back, hugging her tighter to himself like he wanted to be one with her. In the shower, their naked bodies pressed together as their hearts let out the love in them, leaving nothing out.
“You’re never going to leave again?” Xavier asked just to be sure. Like he told her when she left, his life became colorless, like a black-and-white movie. He didn’t know when the love with her started, all he knew was that no matter how much he tried to deny it, he was in love with her, more than he thought he ever would be.
He didn’t know when his obsessiveness and possessiveness with her turned into something else and he only realized it when he was already far too gone. Far too in love with her.
“I’ll never. You won’t either, right?”
“I’d rather choose death than leave.”
“I love you.”
“I love you.”
Her lips stretched into a smile and she let out a giggle. “Say it again.”
“I love you, Elaine Romano.”
“Again.”
“I love you.”
At the last words, Elaine stretched her heels and descended her lips on his, their lips immediately engaging in a tight intimate kiss. They barely kissed for a minute before Elaine’s stomach let out a loud roar of protest, the sound causing them to break away from each other.
“I think your little monster down there is hungry,” he teased.
“You mean my stomach?”
“Your stomach. Let’s go feed you.”
Xavier turned off the shower, grabbed a towel, and began wiping her body with it. Once he was done making sure she was dry enough, he led her into the walk-in closet and helped her into a black shirt of his. “This is yours,” she frowned.
“And I want it on you. You look gorgeous in my shirts.”
A blush crept up her cheek at his words and she let him button the shirt. He didn’t listen to her protest when she tried to stop him from helping her into her panties. He did exactly just that, not letting her lift a finger. He also got into a casual pant and polo before guiding her out of the closet and then out of the room to the kitchen.
“Is there any food?” She asked, her eyes skimming around the dry kitchen that looked like it hadn’t been touched for days if not weeks.
“I'll make us some sandwiches. You'd like that, right?”
“You’ll cook?”
