I Doubt You’re Fertile
“Congratulations, Mrs Romano. You’re pregnant.”
Elaine stared mutely at the doctor as she announced the one news she prayed to the almighty that she didn’t want to hear. Her eyes grew wide at his announcement, her heart pounding every second that passed. Finally, she blinked.
“Ar…are you sure?”
The woman smiled at her, handing her the pregnancy report. “I’ve never made such a mistake in my life. Here is it.”
“How many weeks gone?”
“You’re seven weeks gone, Mrs Romano. This is a great news.”
Elaine gasped. They did it just one time. Just one time she had sex without protection and she got pregnant? Oh almighty, why did she have to be so fertile? Or was it Xavier’s? She groaned inwardly. His goddamn sperm must’ve been overly fertile to get her pregnant that easily.
For all she cares, she can’t have a baby yet, not in the means of all the chaos. Not when she wasn’t sure of her and Xavier’s future. She has no intention of bringing her child up to the knowledge that her parents were total strangers who knew nothing about each other.
“Mr Romano?” The doctor called when she sensed her lack of consecration. “Mrs Romano?”
“Ye…yea?”
“You’re back. I know this is big news for a first-time mom like you. You must be so overwhelmed.” Grasping her hand in hers, the doctor continued. “Your baby is healthy.”
Letting go of her hand, the doctor scribed something into a note and handed it to her. “Please purchase those drugs from the pharmacy on your way out of the hospital.”
Without waiting for another word from the doctor, she snatched the paper from her and stormed out of the office, the door closing with a loud bang. With shaky fingers, shaky legs, and emotions that were all over the place, she dropped the paper at the pharmacy, waiting patiently as the salesperson packaged the drugs written on the paper and placed it before her.
“50 bucks, ma’am.”
She scoffed. 50 bucks? For a seven-week-old baby? Having a child was even expensive to add to her misery.
Dropping the cash on the table and grabbing the drugs, she started making her way out, heading toward the exit of the hospital, her gaze fixated on the report given to her by the doctor.
“Seven weeks gone, healthy baby,” she read out loud.
As she rounded a corner, she didn’t notice the woman coming from the other side and they ended up bumping into each other, growing at the collision.
“The fuck? Can’t you fucking wal… Elaine?”
Her head raised to see the woman before her, eyes widening at the sight of her. Immediately bunching the paper up to the size that fits her fist, she slipped it into her handbag. “Ria.”
“Why the hell did you bump into me? Were you trying to kill my baby?”
Just then, Elaine’s gaze lowered down to Ria’s stomach, gasping at the obvious bump that she flaunted.
“Elaine, what are you doing here?”
Her attention turned to the person beside Ria, sighing afterward. They never leave each other, right? They were joined to the hip. To think that Ria had been hiding her pregnancy all this while. It was sickening to her.
“I see you both are here.”
“Did you bump into her on purpose?” Emily asked.
“Of course not. She’s so insignificant that I didn’t notice her presence at all. Anyway, congratulations on your baby, Ria,” she faked a smile.
Ria gave her a ridiculing smile, her hands on her baby bump, patting it gently. “Aww, my baby just kicked at your words. I’m sure he must be dying to kick you in your face for real. He’s four months in.”
“Your humor should increase now that you’re pregnant. I’m disappointed.”
“I’m sure you are. After all, I doubt you’re fertile. You know, Jimmy was so happy when he heard that I was pregnant, he booked a whole restaurant for me and we had a romantic dinner. I don’t think you’ll ever be able to relate though, considering you might not be able to have a baby after whoring around all these years.” Suddenly, a gasp escaped Ria’s lips. Her eyes drifted down to Elaine’s stomach. “Is that why you’re where? To confirm if you’re fertile or not?”
Elaine rolled her eyes. “You wish.” She would have loved to see the expression on Ria’s face when she found out that she was carrying a seven-week-old baby in her supposed infertile womb. But it was irrelevant, not when she hadn’t even come in contact with the fact that she was carrying a child now.
Ria continued her act, twirling her hair while making sure to flaunt her little bump.
“I’m sure Jimmy would take me on a helicopter date after I have the baby. He loves babies a lot.”
A roar of laughter erupted from Elaine. She wrapped her and around her chest afterward. Glaring at her sister beneath her, she spat.
“I’ll just act like I don’t know Jimmy is broke as fuck or that you’re practically living the life of a church rat, thinking whether to fall on my husband’s feet and ask for his help. Pathetic.”
Ria’s hand shot up, intending to smack Elaine on her cheek but Emily quickly held her hand, stopping the fight like the big sister that she was.
“Behave yourself, Ria. You don’t want to get arrested by the police for disturbing the peace of the hospital,” she warned. To Elaine, she spoke. “Just go your way. Stop bothering Ria, she’s pregnant now.”
Ria peeled her wrist from Emily’s hold.
“Why did you stop me? Ugh. I’m so angry.” She shoved Emily aside. “I asked you not to come to the hospital with me in the first place. Just stay here, I’ll go in myself. Besides Elaine, hope to see you at the family’s get-together week.” Passing her sisters a glaring look, she continued on her journey to the doctor’s office for her appointment.
Elaine sighed, stepping out of Emily’s way and storming out of the hospital.
“Ouch.” Elaine groaned, almost listing her footing as she patted her toes through her shoe, pain spreading to every path of her body from kicking the wall. She was fuming.
Getting her phone out of her bag, she placed a call to Beth.
“Hey, can we meet up? I’ll send you the address.”
For real, she needed someone to talk to else she was going to lose her mind. That was if she hadn’t lost it already.
