Emergency
She was surely going to party hard after the success of her biggest project. Nothing was stopping that. Not after she’d made preparations for so many months. She planned to take her employees out to party all throughout the night.
“Your man is here.”
Elaine turned to look behind her at Beth's words. Her eyes lightened when she saw Xavier at the entrance. He strode toward her, his hands buried in his pocket. Letting out a fleet of giggles, she met him halfway, wrapping her hands around him and hugging him to herself. She breathed in his scent, the stress of the day suddenly dissipating into thin air.
It must be her baby wanting her to snuggle into him more and breathe in his scent like it wasn’t already enough for her. She didn’t know if it was the baby or it was her but she found herself leaning into him more while he patted her hair and delivered kisses at the top of her hair. She smiled.
“You’re doing a good job, aren’t you?” He asked once they broke away from the hug, but her arms were still wrapped around his waist. She didn’t want to break away from him.
“Mm,” she nodded. “Did you see? Everything is going as planned.”
“Even more than planned. I’m proud of you, wife.” He pecked her on her forehead.
“It’s all thanks to the employees also. If they hadn’t joined hands in this, it wouldn’t have been a success at all.”
“I know. But you did the most job. By the way, don’t tell me you’ve been overworking yourself.”
He stared at her from her head down to her heels, trying to find a trace of exhaustion and when he found none, he returned his gaze to her eyes.
“I’m not overworking. Except for my swollen feet, there’s nothing.” It was the truth. Her legs were hurting already from standing too much. It was due to her feet being swollen as a result of her pregnancy. She could barely walk freely without feeling so heavy and tired. The only thing that kept her in place for the night was the thought of her fashion show that was going along smoothly.
It was the only thought that kept her standing and diligent in her work.
“Swollen feet again?”
“It never left. It’s been like this for a week.”
Xavier pulled her hands from his waist and led her to a chair. She understood and took a seat, her eyes on Beth who walked to them and handed her a bottle of water.
“I’ll go supervise the event.” She walked out.
Once Elaine was done with the bottle of water, she handed it to Xavier who closed the cap and placed it on the nearest table.
“I’ll massage your feet once we get home. How does that sound?”
“I’d love that. Can I ask for something?”
“Anything.”
“Umm. Once the event ends, I’d love to take the employees for drinks. I won’t take that much time.”
“For drinks, why?”
“They’ve done their best for the fashion show. It’s only right that I relieve them with a few glasses of wine.”
He patted her well-trimmed hair that glistened in the light. “Fine. As long as you take care of yourself.”
She nodded immediately.”I’ll definitely take care of myself. I was sad thinking you won’t be able to make it here.”
She reminisced about the time when she sulked after he announced it to her. It would have made her sad if he hadn’t shown up.
Before Xavier could reply to her words, the sudden blaring of his phone reverberated in the space that they were in. He dipped his hands into his pocket and brought out his phone, his shoulder tensing at the sight of the caller’s ID.
“What’s wrong? Who is it?”
He forced a smile at her and swiped on the green prom, placing the phone close to his ears.
“Report,” he ordered.
Elaine watched with furrowed brows as Xavier’s shoulders tensed more at each second that passed. His eyes darkened and with clenched fists, he barked.
“The fuck, you couldn’t even report early?”
She stood up from the chair. Seeing the worry on her face, he raised a hand, signaling her not to come forward and he backed away from her to the other side to continue making his call. Even though he was a few meters away from her, she could still hear him.
“If this gets ruined, I’ll fucking break your bones, trust me,” he roared with enough bite to signal a world war. “I’m coming. Call for backup immediately.” She wondered what the issue was. What was it that must have happened to make him this disoriented?
He weaved his fingers through his hair in frustration and cursed for the last time before ending the call. Her worries remained deep on her face, instantly wondering what exactly went wrong. It shouldn’t be so bad, right?”
“What’s wrong, Xavier? Did something go wrong?” She hurried toward him, clutching his suit.
“Don’t bother yourself with it.”
There wasn’t an ounce of sweetness in his tone.
“But you’re going to leave. Is it that serious?”
He placed a hand on her shoulder.
“It’s serious, doll. But don’t worry, I’ll fix it immediately, okay? Once you’re done here, go home and wait for me. I’ll wrap up soon and meet you.”
“Xavier.”
“Listen to me. Enjoy your day and don’t let this bother you, do you hear me?”
She nodded, slowly.
He kissed her forehead and without a second look, he stormed out on her, his footsteps hurried and loud. He walked out just in time for Beth to walk in. He breezed past her and she was left looking back in confusion.
She rushed to Elaine whose face fell.
“Elaine, what’s wrong? Why is he leaving so angrily.”
Her shoulders slumped. “There is an emergency that needs his attention.”
“What sort of emergency? Are you okay with it?”
“I guess I am. Enough about it. Let’s focus more on our show. I have to go give my speech now, right?”
“Almost time. Did you write it out?”
“I did.”
