Your Tummy Got Bigger
“That is enough, Margaret,” Mrs. Romano cut in, beginning to serve food on their plates. “We’re here for your mother's birthday party. Anyone who messes up will have me to contend with and this time, I mean it with everything in me. Do you all understand.”
Everyone gave a curt nod except Margaret. She pouted her lips forward with a deep frown settled on her face. “They were trying to make it seem like I wanted them dead. Even though we have differences, it’s not enough to think of me in such a way. I’m not a fucking psychopath.”
“Margaret! Mind your language and keep shut or else,” Mrs Romano warned, her head snapping in Margaret’s direction to give her a warning stare. Once she got the idea, Margaret nodded.
“Fine.”
Elaine’s cheek burned bright red as Xavier stopped her fork from digging into the meal. He took a spoon from the table and tasted each and every one. Only when he confirmed that they were safe for her did he let her eat them?
After having a fill of the food, Elaine rose from the chair and made her way to the adjoined kitchen, stepping to the sink to wash her hands. She turned on the tap and let the water cascade over her palm. She’d stepped out mainly because the silence in the hall was quite uncomfortable. She’s been finding it hard to swallow her meal due to the eyes on her. If it wasn’t Margaret, it was Xavier’s father, and if it wasn’t him, Jimmy and his wife who was her sister.
She needed a breath of fresh air.
Just as she wiped her hands with a tissue and turned to walk out of the kitchen, she felt someone walk into the kitchen. Her eyes raised to meet Ria’s. Ria’s lips curved into a friendly smile as she stepped toward Elaine.
“Hey,” she greeted. “It’s good to see you again.”
Elaine’s gaze skimmed down to her tummy. “Your tummy got bigger.”
Ria smiled and wrapped her hands around her belly, patting it lovingly. “The doctor said that my baby is growing so healthy. There is no complication and all I need is rest and lots of love.”
Elaine nodded at her obvious display. “That’s relieving to hear. All the best, anyway.”
“You’re such a sweetheart.” Ria walked to the sink and washed her hand before wiping it with tissue afterward. “Anyway, Elaine. About what we discussed the other time, I’m still leaning on you for your help. I and Jimmy are truly sorry for what happened. The whole drama and all. We don’t know if you’ll be so kind to help talk to your husband about our case
“You can speak to him yourself, Ria. My husband and I don't talk about people’s issues.”
Ria sighed, pulling her hair into a bun. She stepped up to Elaine and held her palms. “The thing is, your husband thinks we’re not remorseful. If you speak to him, it will be easier.”
“I’ll think of it.”
“What is going on?”
Ria immediately let go of Elaine’s palms at the sound of the deep voice that sounded at the entrance of the kitchen. She lowered her head and greeted. “Mr Romano.”
Xavier stepped up to Elaine’s side, grabbed her wrist, and brought her to his side. Passing Ria a glare, he began guiding her out of the kitchen and walking out of the dining hall. He led her to the stairs and pulled her in front of him, gesturing for her to take the stairs.
Elaine didn’t complain. She simply took the stairs and kept walking, stopping once she got in front of Xavier’s room which he pushed open and led her into.
“What was it that she was saying to you?” He asked, losing his tie and throwing it to the floor.
“Nothing much. Just her usual tricks to try and bring me to her side.”
“Elaborate.”
“She said something about me helping her plead with you about a company or stuff. When she speaks, I don’t pay that much attention so the details are quite unclear to me. Though I told her that I can’t be of help to her.”
“That better be a joke. If I see either of them close to you again, I won’t hesitate to act. You stay away from them and they stay away from you.”
“I always do.” She finally had the chance to look around the room, nodding at the clean sight that she met with. The room was sparkling clean, a proof that it had always been looked after. “I need to take a shower before bed.”
She darted her hands backward and zipped down her dress, stepping out of it, revealing herself in just her panties and matching blue bra. Right before she could step fully into the bathroom, she turned and looked back at him. “Want to join me?”
“Fuck.”

A loud banging at the door woke Elaine the next morning. Letting out a loud yawn, she threw the comforter off her body and sat up on the bed, her hair pooling around her face like a ten-year-old bird nest, messy and dry as fuck. Darting her eyes to the other side of the bed where her husband had laid a few hours ago before her eyes drifted to sleep, she sighed when she found it empty.
Her hands found her phone on the bedside table, eyes widening as she stared at the time. She immediately sprang up from the ends and raced to the door. She’d slept late enough. It was grandmother’s birthday party and there was a lot to do.
Unlocking the door, she popped her head out, a gasp escaping her lips when she saw who it was at the door. She opened the door wider. “Emily?” She frowned, her eyes skimming down to the dress on her hand. “When did you arrive?”
“A few hours ago. Ria invited me. I was asked to go bring you this dress. From your mother-in-law.”
