Where Is Elaine’s Baby
~T-Plus 7 Days~
It had been a whole week since Elaine got out of the hospital and for the first time in a week, she stepped outside, for the first time in a week, she saw the outside world instead of being confined in her room all day.
Dressed in a gray hoodie and black sweatpant, Elaine dropped her shopping cart in front of the checking officer in the grocery shop that she was in. Her eyes were swollen from having cried too much and her head was covered with the hoodie cap. She looked barely recognizable and maybe that was the reason no one recognized her as the owner of one of the biggest fashion companies in the country.
“Your card, ma’am,” the salesperson requested. She dipped her hand into her pocket and pulled it back, two cards in her hand. Slipping the black card back into her pocket, she handed the other card to the salesperson. The black card belonged to Xavier and she wasn’t going to use his money to shop for her grocery items right?
They were married in name only now.
“Thank you,” she offered a low bow of greeting to the salesperson, and slowly walked out of the shop, beginning her journey back to her apartment, with two shopping cellophane bags in her hand.
If it wasn’t for the few necessities that she needed, she didn’t plan to step outside. She’d planned to stay home until she could no longer bear the air in the space. But she was only just human and after using all the tissues, and wipes and consuming all the food in the house to stay alive, she realized that she needed to step outside but only when it was dark.
Her apartment was only a few meters from the store and after using all the tissues to wipe her tears, there was none to use. It was a necessity.
Finally getting to the apartment’s building, she got into the elevator that led to her block, her body wavering a bit in exhaustion. Aside from crying being one of her problems, she also caught a fever a few days ago and had been taking medications like her life depended on them.
Once the elevator door slid open and she got out, her legs froze on the floor when they caught sight of the figure standing before her door. Not figure, figures. She frowned, her eyes accessing them as they stretched their necks, trying to look through the peephole of her door.
Slowly, she took steps to them, her footsteps flattering when she finally recognized who they were. She stopped, contemplating turning around and escaping them but before she could actually act on her thoughts, their heads turned to her.
No, she wasn’t ready for them, she wasn’t ready for their drama. She didn’t want to talk to them, not today, not ever. Not when she looked like she just walked out of a horror movie.
They folded their hands under her chest as if waiting for her to step forward and like her legs had a mind of their own, they began making their way toward them.
“Oh look who’s here,” Ria exclaimed the moment she stood before them. She looked at Elaine from her hood-covered head down to her flip-flop-covered feet. She let out a light mock laughter. “Look who isn’t married anymore. I didn’t see this coming, I swear.”
“What do you want?”
“No more rich husband, huh?”
Elaine turned to stare at Emily instead and asked the same question. “What do you both want?” Emily was more sensible than the childish Ria. But it didn’t seem so this time as Emily let out a similar chuckle.
“What we want? Trust me, we want nothing from you. You’re worse than a puppet. Right, Ria?”
“You’re right sis. I can’t believe that the wife of such a man would end up this way. Back in her apartment, looking as miserable as ever.”
For the first time in years, Elaine agreed with the words of her sisters. They were right. She did look miserable. Puffy eyes, swollen face, trembling body. She looked ten times worse than she’d ever looked in her entire life and so, they were right. She still wondered how she became this way. Just a few weeks ago, she was still the wife of Xavier Romano.
They lived happily and she for sure had been happy. She didn’t even have the chance to enjoy the fame that came with completing her fashion show and making a huge sale. Her highest day came out to be the worst day of her life. It was far more depressing than she thought.
“Is that what you came here for? To find out my miserable state?”
“Part, yes. And you look even worse than we expected.”
She nodded.
“I agree too. I look so miserable. Now that you’ve seen my miserable state, viola. You can leave.”
“Not before… oh my god.” Ria’s eyes fell on her stomach and she let out a loud gasp. She pointed same to Emily whose hand clasped her mouth in shock.
“Oh my God.”
“Sister Emily, do you see it?”
“I see it. Where is Elaine’s baby?”
“I thought it was simply just a rumor. I’m so scared.” Ria’s hands flew to wrap around her swollen stomach as if scared that she would lose her own baby after Elaine.
Elaine swallowed as her eyes skimmed down to Ria’s protruded stomach, her heart clenching at the sight. Only she knew how much she missed having her baby bump, she hadn’t missed anything as much as she did with her baby and Xavier. He missed them both to death and the sight of Ria’s stomach caused her to blink back her tears.
“Can you both leave?”
“See what I told you, Emily. She's bad luck. It didn’t change at all. It never changed. I’ve been trying to convince Mother of this for the past months and I’m sure this would prove me right.”
