Xavier Sees Women Below Him

Finally, Elaine stepped into the agreed place of meeting with Margaret. She looked around the place, her eyes immediately catching sight of Margaret at the other end of the cafe. She sat with class, her legs crossed around each other as she scrolled through her iPad. Her eyes sparkled as they fell on Elaine who stepped forward to her table and sat on the chair astride her.

“Hey,” Margaret greeted. “I thought that you’re not going to show up. Thank you for acknowledging my invitation.”

“I'm only here for a few minutes and I hope it will be very useful. Please say whatever you have to say now. I have to leave in twenty minutes.”

“There’s no rush. From what I know, your lunch break won’t end until forty minutes. It would be so wrong to have lunch now that you’re here. Please order something. Bills on me.”

Elaine wanted to ignore her words and snap her to say whatever it was that she invited her for. But she stood herself halfway and waved her hand for a waiter. After her order of tea and chocolate biscuits that excluded peanuts, she sighed and crossed her legs together. If she wanted to leave right on time, it would be smart to just order instead of arguing with her. She was taking a risk sitting in the space as Margaret despite Xavier’s warnings and she knew he would be furious as fuck if he eventually finds out that she saw his sister behind his back.

“I’ve ordered now. Can we get to the topic of today? I don’t have all day.”

“You’re right.” She leaned in closer to Elaine and held her palm softly. She began. “You know when my brother first said he was getting married to you, I was shocked. But I wasn’t shocked at the fact that he decided to get married after so long. I was shocked that he picked you. You see, you’re not usually his type of woman and I feared that you wouldn’t be able to handle him. He’s unhinged, too smart for his good, bratty, possessive, and overly controlling. Too dark for your sweet soul, dear. But unlike what I thought, you were able to handle him so well and turned him into who he is right now. For that, I’m sorry for doubting you.”

Elaine nodded at each word that she spoke, trying to register the words into her head. It was the first time that Margaret was at least telling her a sweet word. It had never happened before and she never thought that it would. Slowly pulled her hands away from Margaret’s hold and rubbed it slowly. She avoided the woman’s gaze. “So why are you saying this?”

“So that you understand how much of a girly girl I am. I wanted to save you from my brother. Though, I don’t want to anymore as I can see you both are a power couple. What I’m trying to say is that I’m a woman just like you and vice versa. We women understand each other so well more than anyone else.”

Elaine still didn’t get what she was driving at. She could tell that Margaret had other things hidden that she wanted to say and she was only just waiting for the right time and introducing the first path of her words first. She was being careful with her words before she dropped the actual bomb.

“I get you, Margaret. But I still don’t see why you call for this meeting if you’re only going to tell me about how much of a girly girl you are. I mean, we’re all girly girls, aren’t we? I advise that you go straight to the point as I don’t have all day.”

As the waiter brought in her order, she smiled at him and took a sip of the tea, moaning at the taste. It almost had the same taste as the tea that her mother-in-law had given her when she was pregnant. At the taste, she couldn’t help but think back to her pregnancy. She missed the tiny bump that had accompanied her day and night. It was becoming depressing to go to bed every night without the baby bump.

“I’ll go to the point since you’re insisting. The issue is that Xavier sees women as unequal to him!”

“What?”

“You have to believe me. He sees us below him. People he can control whenever he wants, people he can bend to his rules at every time. That’s who your husband is. You know why he doesn’t let women engage in his business, why he never tells you anything or gets you involved as his wife, it’s because he sees you as incapable, someone unworthy of his business and below him. He’ll never get you involved even when it’s urgent. That’s just who my brother is, a gender discriminator. Not just him, everyone else in the family.”

“That’s because he’s trying to protect us. He didn’t want us involved in the business because he thinks it’s dangerous.”

“Dangerous for us and not for him? Grow up, alright? I used to think that’s the case too. Until it became clear to me the kind of person he is.” Margaret let out a chuckle. She took a sip of her coffee and brought a cookie to her mouth, taking a bite and chewing before she continued. “You see, my brother and I used to be as close as every other sibling out there once in a while. Until our father decided to hand him the family’s business even though Xavier had his. Why does he handle two when he can let the other one go?”

“These questions can’t be answered by me, Margaret.” Elaine was getting uncomfortable with the information passed to her. She shifted uncomfortably in her seat with each second that passed and she found herself grabbing a cookie and stuffing it into her mouth, her legs tapping on the floor countless times.

“They can’t be answered by you but you can help change the situation.”
