Your Husband Is Here
It has been two days since the attack and since Elaine learned the shocking news that turned her mobile. Ever since she learned about it, she became extremely quiet, speaking when only spoken to. She'd only decided to come out of her shell when the thoughts in her head became too much and she needed escape.
Staring at the few files on her desk, she sighed. There weren't a lot. At least Xavier kept to his words of taking care of things in her workplace. There weren't a lot of things to do.
“Elaineeee,” she raised her head when she heard Beth’s call from the entrance. Beth ran to her side, side hugging her and leaving kisses on her cheek.
“Why didn't you tell me you’ll be resuming work today?” She whined.
Elaine pinched the path between her forehead, a blinding headache threatening to pound at her head. Who wouldn't have a headache in her position? Plus she was pregnant for goodness sake. Hearing such news in her first trimester was no flex at all.
“I just planned to resume an hour after I woke up.”
“Are you resuming for real? I promise I'll take care of you and nothing will happen to the baby.”
“I'm resuming for real this time. I'm done sitting at home all day.” It was exhausting sitting at home with all the troubles staring at you.
“What did your husband say? Did he agree to let you be?”
“He has no say in my life. It's my workplace,” she said while flipping open one of the files on her desk.
“How have things been?”
“Fine as always. Things have been going pretty cool. He's taking care of everything in the dark.” Beth stared at her, her eyes half closed, examining her expression. “What's wrong, Elaine? Who pissed you off.”
“Nothing, Beth. I'm tired.”
Beth rolled her eyes.
“You know I'm not buying that. Did you fight with your husband?”
“I fought with no one.” For real, she wanted to tell Beth what it was that was bothering her but she didn't know where to start from or how to put it in words. Perhaps ‘Hey Beth, my husband is part of the mafia’ would do? Or ‘Hey Beth, my husband does illegal stuff?’ Beth would scream her heart out or probably run a million miles away from her, hiding where no one would find her.
“That's a lie. You look upset.”
Elaine shook her head.
“Fine. Anyway, I found a really good shop to shop for cute baby clothes.” Elaine raised her head, the topic seeming interesting to her.
“What shop?”
Beth squealed.
“The clothes I saw were so cute. You need to see them, girl.”
“But we don't know the gender of the baby yet and besides, it's barely three months.”
“It doesn't matter. Adds to the fun even. Right, I got you something. I'll be right back.”
“What is it?”
Beth sprinted out of the office soon returning with a cookie box which she placed on the table before Elaine.
“I was going to send this to you but you're here now. I made these cookies myself.” She opened the box. “See how cute they look in different shapes. It's healthy too.”
“Ohmigod, this looks sweet. How do you know I want cookies badly.”
Beth said in a hushed voice. “The baby in your womb communicated it to me of course.”
Giggling, Elaine picked a cookie and took a bite, the milky taste of it washing over her mouth. She moaned, looking over to her friend who watched her every reaction without taking a breath.
“This is so good, Beth.”
Beth finally took a breath of relief after knowing that her hard work paid off. She'd spent almost the whole night trying to make cookies for her friend.
“Are you sure you made this?”
Her lips twitched. “Of course I did. I spent the whole night on this.”
Elaine moaned, taking another cookie from the box, her worries flying out of the office. “You have to teach me this recipe of yours.”
“Only if you invite me to your house again.”
“Not after you stole my vases the last time.” Well, her friend has insisted on having a few golden vases seated at the side of the living room. She’d whined and refused to leave until she handed her at least two. She didn’t know what to do except to hand her the vases she asked for.
“Stole? You gave them to me willingly. Plus that wasn’t the only thing I wanted. There’s a lot in that house that I’d love to steal.”
“And then you’ll face Xavier afterward.”
Beth's smile faded at Xavier’s name. “Nah, I’d rather not steal than face that husband of yours. He’s too serious.”
Elaine laughed. “Serious, how?” To her, grumpy was the word.
“Serious with everything, like he can’t have a little fun in his boring life.”
“Grumpy?”
“Exactly. Grumpy as fuck. Oops, I have a lot of work to do. I’ll talk to you later.”
Elaine groaned. She didn’t want her to leave, not when she already became a good distraction to her. “You really have to?”
“If I want things to be perfect at work, yes. Bye.”
She gave Elaine a flying kiss before turning her back to her. Elaine watched as her friend strode out of her office, leaving her all alone to her thoughts again.
She slumped her shoulders, staring at the cookies that had become boring to her. She let out a tired sigh. A few seconds after Beth left, she returned, this time running into the office.
Elaine’s brows furrowed.
“What is it, Beth? Why are you running?”
“Elaine, he’s here.” Beth's legs trembled.
“Who?”
“Your husband.”
“What?” Her eyes immediately grew wide. What in fuck name was he doing at her office? She looked around her, searching for a place to hide but she found none. Groaning in anger, she faced Beth.
“Where is he?”
“He is making his way here already an..and he looked angry.”
