Look Pretty And Show Up

Xavier's hold on Elaine’s wrist tightened as he led her out of the manor, his footsteps fast and angry. She tried to keep up with his footsteps, her heels slowing her movement. Just as they got to his car parked right outside the building, she yanked her wrist free from his hold, taking a position in front of the car.

“What was that, Xavier? You can't talk to your family like that,” she scolded, her fingers caressing her sore wrist which he had held too tight.

“Like how?”

“My wedding is in a week. Do not attend,” she mimicked. “Or whatever it is that you said back there.”

He grunted.

“I was only referring to Margaret and her likings, not everyone. Of course, my mother would be present.”

She sighed in relief. The last thing she wanted was to make more enemies than the ones she already had. Well, it was a good thing that Margaret wasn't going to be attending their wedding. She would rather have real people around on her big day not fake judgy people who only know how to bully.

“I…I thought…”

“Get in the car, doll. We’re done here.”

At his command, she rounded the car to the passenger side and settled in same time that he got behind the wheel, getting ready to start the car.

“I have a question.”

His eyes snapped to her, his annoyance evident.

“What now?”

“Are we really getting married like in a week? I mean, I haven't prepared anything yet. There's no wedding card, guest lists, wedding planner, and all of that. These things are pretty important.”

“Are they?”

Elaine bobbed her head up and down. She wanted to have a dream wedding, you know. Even though it was for business, it wouldn’t hurt if she was happy, would it?

“Well, I already have those things prepared.” Her eyes widened at his words. “You don’t have to bother about anything. All you have to do is look pretty and show up on our wedding day.”

She gasped. “Re…really?”

“Enough question for the day.” Xavier started the car, his eyes on the road as he reversed the car backward, heading to their home.

She tightened her fingers around her dress trying to stop herself from squealing in excitement. Was her marriage going to be like those marriages where the woman just has to look pretty while the man provides everything? From Xavier’s words and actions, she could tell that he was a provider, a fucking provider.

He’d even given her a black card, unlimited. ‘Good lord,” she squealed inwardly. ‘I just hit the jackpot.’ He was her jackpot.

*****
“Finally, we’re home,” Elaine exclaimed as the door was opened for them by the servants. Xavier’s home suddenly became hers too. Maybe because the big block of ice beside her felt so much like home.

As they made their way into the living room, her eyes fell on the items that lay prettily on the middle table.

“What is that?”

Xavier looked in the direction. “Oh, it arrived already.”

“What is it?”

“Go see for yourself.”

She walked to the table, eyes widening at the sight of the cards on the table. “Is it what I’m thinking?” She grabbed a card, her eyes skimming through the hard paper. Written on it was a ‘wedding invitation.’ It was their wedding invitation card, the words written in gold, the cover ethereal.

“Oh my, this is so pretty.” She turned the card to the back, smiling in satisfaction. Why does it seem that all her dreams are coming to pass?

“You like them?” He asked, coming to stand before her.

“I love them.”

“I thought as much. You can write a list of the people you’d love to invite. If the cards ain’t enough, I’ll get more. You just have to say the word.”

“Thank you, thank you so much.” She can’t wait to deliver the cards.

“As long as you’re happy.”

“You know me so well. I only have a few friends I’d love to invite. Perhaps a few business partners. Are we having like a big wedding?”

“What do you want?” He asked.

“It’s your wedding too. It doesn’t have to be what I want only if you know what I mean.”

He cocked his head to the side, staring at her from a better angle.

“What do you want, Doll? Name it.”

“Fine then.” She shrugged. Since he didn't care, they should do it her way then. “If you’re not that interested, we can have it my way. Hmm,” she clicked her tongue. “I think I want a small wedding in terms of people. Just a few people and lots of cameras. I want to show the world.”

“Noted.”

“Then I want it flowery, vanilla scented and the walkway should be blue. As for the wedding hall, perhaps a tall building, with floor-to-ceiling windows, expensive. You’re fine with these?”

“Definitely.”

Elaine's eyes popped. He was a golden retriever to her. All he wanted was to fulfill her wishes.
“Your wishes are mine, Doll,” he added.

Just then as if to ruin her mood, her stomach grumbled loudly, the sound reverberating in the air around them, her hands covering her face in embarrassment.

“There’s a box of food beside the cards. I made an order on our way

She stared at the box of food she didn’t realize was there. Opening it, she spread out the different dishes on the table. Rice, spare ribs, fish soup, and sauce, she listed the dishes inwardly, her eyes fixated on the sauce. He knows exactly just what she likes.

“The sauce looks good.”

“Try it out.”

Taking a spoon from the box of food, she dipped it into the sauce and brought it to her mouth, savoring the delicious taste that washed over her taste buds. Humming in satisfaction she turned to Xavier. “This is soooo good.”

Xavier’s gaze traveled from her eyes down to her lips. His eyes darkened as they fixated on the sauce on the side of her lip. With his throat bobbing, he pointed to her lips.

“Get rid of it!”

She frowned.

“Rid of what?”

“You know what I’m talking about, your Lips.”

She touched the other side of her lips. “I can’t find anything wrong with them.”

Sighing, he took a step forward to stand closer to her. Placing his hand on her hair, he angled her so close to his face. With a swipe of his tongue, he licked off the sauce at the side of her lips, nodding in approval.

“Not bad.”

Elaine stood still, staring into space even after he let go of her and made his way to the dining with the food. Did he just, lick the sauce off her mouth? Her heart thumped loudly, fingers caressing her lips. Xavier Romano might be the end of her.

“Come eat, Doll. I wouldn’t mind finishing these.”

Immediately, she broke away from her thoughts.
“Don’t you dare”
