Don’t Leave My Sight

“Fucking. Sit. Down.”

His command forced her to sit down, her body trembling. He was angry, that she could tell. Xavier had never raised his voice like that to her, he’d never stared at her the way he was right now and only the thought of that was enough to have her trembling all over.

Xavier stormed toward her, his huge body quickly invading her personal space. She flinched when he raised his hand and touched her head.

“Stay still, I’m not going to hurt you.”

Like he said, he didn’t hurt her. He placed a hand on her forehead, cursing at the feel of her temperature. “See?”

He moved over to the other side of the room and came back with a glass of water in his hand. “Drink,” he ordered.

Grabbing the glass with trembling hands, she brought it to her mouth and consumed it, her eyes fixated on him.

“You’re carrying my baby, from now on you’ll not act rashly or make me yell at you, understood?”

She immediately nodded. “So…so, I’m not going to have an abortion?”

“Are you crazy? If anything happens to that child in you, you’ll have yourself to blame, get it?”

Again, she nodded, still trying to process his words in her head. That was it? He wasn’t going to yell at her for not taking a plan B and getting pregnant? She thought. He wasn’t going to force her to have an abortion? It sounded too good to be true, after all, he didn’t want a baby. They never even talked about having a baby.

“What you looking at me for?” At his words, she tore her gaze away from him, staring at her perfectly manicured leg.

“Hence, I’m in charge of you. You’ll not leave the house without my permission and you’re not allowed to leave my sight, do you understand me?”

She nodded.

“Words, Elaine. You’re not fucking dumb.”

“I…I understand.”

Xavier snatched the paper from the bedside table and handed it to her. Elaine’s eyes skimmed through the power, her eyes widening, trying to process what was written on them.

“Wh…what is this? I don’t understand.”

“The doctor said you have a complicated pregnancy.”

Her mouth fell open. “Com…complicated? Nothing happened to the baby right?”

“Nothing happened but he’s at risk. You’ll have to be extra careful to prevent miscarriage or other complications. You don’t want those, right?”

She shook her head. “Good. That is why you have to stay on my watch all the time. I don’t trust you with that child and what you did at the party. Don’t fucking try it again.” He was referring to the alcohol that she’d drunk without a second thought.

“I…I said it was unintentional.”

“Intentional or not, don’t.”

Right before she could reply, their eyes flew to the door at a sound. A middle-aged short doctor walked in. It was the same doctor that had announced her pregnancy to her.

“You’re awake already, Mrs. Romano. How are you feeling?”
She asked, taking steps toward her.

“Better.”

After checking her temperature and heartbeat, the woman returned her attention to her. “Everything is normal for now.”

“Is she good enough for a discharge?”
Xavier asked from behind her.

“We’ll still watch her temperature for tonight and in the morning, I’ll check again and inform you.”

“Alright, thank you.”

Once the doctor disappeared, Xavier walked to her side, helped her to her, and covered her with the blanket. She peered at him. “Sleep.”

*****

The first person Elaine saw when her eyes fluttered open in the morning was Xavier’s mother. She held two food boxes in her hands and raised them at her. “Tada.”

“Mo…mother,” she croaked.

“Oh child, how are you feeling? Are you feeling any discomfort? Do you want me to call the doctor?” The woman dropped the food boxes on the couch beside her and rushed toward Elaine.

“I’m fine.” She struggled to sit up on the bed.

“Wait.” Roberta pressed the corner of her bed and it raised, angling her in a sitting position. She placed a pillow on her back.

“Are you sure you’re okay, darling? You look pale.”

“I don’t feel any discomfort. Did you just come?”

“Yes, dear. Sorry I woke you up but I brought food.”
She raised the boxes again, seemingly excited to show Elaine the food that she cooked with her very hand. “Now that you’re carrying Xavier’s child, I have to take care of you. Nothing can happen to my grandchild.”

Elaine watched as the woman excitedly took a picture of her. “Just to send to my friends. Everyone needs to know that I’m going to be a grandmother soon.”

“Not the world, mother,” Xavier’s voice rang from the entrance of the room. He strode in. “Everyone doesn't need to know. It’s my child, not yours.”

“My grandchild.”

“And you’re not going to tell anyone until I permit.”

Her face fell and she looked like she was going to cry. “What?”

“You heard me.”

“Not even my friends?”

“Not even your friends.”

She looked at her phone, eyes staring at the congratulatory messages she was already receiving. “Well, I already sent it 1.1 seconds before you arrived.”

Xavier let out a frustrated sigh. He walked toward the box of food his mother had made and opened it, nodding at her choice of food. Immediately, the woman swooped to his side.

“I’ll do it.”

She placed the box on the hospital’s bed table and placed it in front of Elaine.

Elaine picked up a spoon but before she could even lift a finger, Roberta snatched the spoon from her.

“I’ll feed you. Don’t do anything, you hear me. Just sit and care for the baby.”

“Mother.” She could feed herself.

“Don’t protest, okay? Let me do this.”

Bringing a spoonful of soup to Elaine’s lips, she smiled at the pregnant woman who consumed it.

“From now on, you’re going to be spoon-fed. You can’t lift a finger.”

Elaine gasped. She was carrying a life, a baby not an egg.
