Elaine’s Anger
Elaine had only asked her husband to go away for a while not to disappear for a good three days and leave her all alone in the mansion. The whole house had been empty with a few of the servants but not Xavier. After she’d come around the previous day, she’d waited for Xavier to show up at the house but he didn't. Not even a call.
It was the funeral of Albeit Rock and it was a small affair. The Rock family had insisted on not inviting anyone except the immediate family members. Not only had they refused, Bianca had slept and refused to attend his burial.
Elaine and her sisters with a few of their relatives stood before the grave and watched as the priest said the last prayer for the deceased and poured holy water on it before announcing that the family could drop their last gifts. Everyone else but the daughters of the man refused to move from their spot. They were the only people who didn’t come with flowers and other gifts.
Once everyone was done gifting the deceased, the funeral came to an end and everyone parted ways. Elaine turned, clutching her black umbrella as she began to make her way out of the place, not sparing the grave a second chance. If it was possible, she would’ve spat on the grave and told her father just how much she hated him for killing her baby.
The least that she could do for him was wear black to his burial ceremony and at least play the path of his daughter. After now, she would never return to the grave again. It would be a betrayal to her daughter who never had the chance to see the light of day.
“Elaine.” She paused when she heard Emily’s voice from behind. She turned.
“Emily.”
“How are you doing? Are you okay?” Emily pulled her into a short hug. After they pulled away from the hug, she looked Elaine over from her head down to her toes. “I didn’t think that you’d wear black.”
“What was I supposed to wear? Everyone is dressed in black.”
“Considering all that father did to you… I didn’t think.”
“Just because he’s my father. Now that we’re fatherless, I feel a bit of weight lift. I wonder who else out there has their father as their worst enemy.”
“It’s fine, we’ll be fine.”
They held their hands and gasped lovingly at each other as if wanting to console the other and share their pains. Their moment was broken by the sound of chuckles from the side followed by claps.
“Look who's here.”
They cocked their heads to the side, their eyes rolling backward at the sight of the people before them.
“Diana, Luke,” she acknowledged.
“It’s a good thing that you still know our names,” Diana scoffed.
“Of course I will. I know the names of all my enemies.”
“Quite impressive. By the way, where is your darling husband? I can’t find him here. Oops, did he finally decide to abandon you? It’s no surprise at all.”
Elaine’s fingers curled into a ball and it took everything in her power not to descend them on her so-called cousin.
“Thanks for attending my father’s funeral. If you’re done, please leave.”
“Too bad that I came to the funeral only to spy on y’all. And it seems your husband finally decided that you’re good for nothing. I’ve always known that he’ll abandon you after everything.”
Elaine sighed and placed her hands around her waist. “It’s a wonder how you all are still married after everything. Considering what happened the last time, I didn’t expect that you both would still be married.” She averted her attention to Luke. “How shameless.”
“Don’t cross the path,” he spat.
“What? Scared everyone is going to know? She cheated with your cousin, didn’t she? Such a chaotic marriage.” They came to her first to begin speaking shit and since they were up for trouble, she was ready to give it to them however they wanted. She wasn’t going to let them ever trample on her again or speak shit.
“Are you so hurt that your husband dumped you again? Considering how you can’t even give him a baby, it’s no surprise he’ll find one elsewhere.”
Emily stepped between them and pushed Diana. “Watch your tongue if you don’t want my wrath. You don’t speak to either of my sisters that way.”
“Oops.” Diana darted her hands forward to cover her mouth mockingly. “What is it that just happened? You sisters are back together? What happened to the fight between you all? Honestly,” she leaned in. “I enjoyed it when y’all fought with each other. It was one moment that everyone appeared to like the most in the family. Too bad, y’all outgrew the fight.”
“Get out of the way.”
“And if I don’t? Will you create a scene in front of your father’s grave? Do it then.”
Both sisters clamped their eyes shut. They had the urge to pull the girl’s hair and show her that they weren’t the Emily and Elaine that they used to be months ago. But they didn’t want to fight in front of graves. They weren’t so disrespectful to the dead.
“I’m waiting. Fight me.”
Just before Elaine could give in to Diana’s wishes and lunged at her to vent all her pent-up anger at her, a voice rang out from behind Diana.
“Do you have a death wish?”
Everyone stilled including Diana and as she turned to see who it was, she gasped and moved to the side, lowering her head. Elaine raised her head and instinctively let out a sigh.
“Mr Romano.”
“Mr Romano,” Luke and his wife greeted in unison. “We were only saying hi to Elaine.”
“I heard otherwise.”
Luke faked a laugh. “Of course not. We were just grieving with our Elaine. You know that it’s so sad losing one’s father so early in life.”
Xavier nodded and stepped up to Luke. He placed his hand on his shoulder and smirked as the man flinched. And then, his hand tightened on his shoulder, getting a hold of the bone and pressing on it until he screamed in pain. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I swear.”
It was only after they began getting attention from the other people did he let the man go but not without a warning. “Next time I see you in my wife’s zip code, I won’t hesitate to end your miserable life. Do you hear me?”
“I swear, I’m sorry.”
Without even waiting for his wife, he scrambled out of the place, running out of the cemetery followed by Diana. Once they were out of sight, Xavier settled his gaze on Elaine who didn’t share him a look and only just locked her hand around Emily’s arms. “We should go, sister.”
“Your husband is here.”
“I can see him clearly. But I want to go with you. Let’s just go.”
But Emily was scoffed and peeled Elaine’s hand from her arms. “Don’t be an angry nagging wife for so long and go to your husband. My fiancé is here too. I’ll give you a call when I’m home.”
At that, she raced out of Elaine’s face before she could try to call her, leaving Elaine all alone with her husband. She wrapped her hands around her chest and threw her gaze to the other side of the place.
“We should go home, yeah?”
“Home,” she scoffed. “I don’t think I have a home.”
“Don’t start.”
“Don’t start? Really.”
Xavier massaged his temple and sighed. He knew that he would have a lot of groveling to do after sending his wife away from home all of a sudden and knowing her, she would give him a hard time before thinking of forgiving him.
“Let’s talk about this at home, okay?”
“I don’t know which home you’re talking about. I think I’m better off at my mother’s home.”
“You wouldn’t do that, babe. I’m sorry, okay? You can punish me and do whatever you want with me but don’t leave. I’ll make it up to you.”
“Where have you been throughout the week, huh? Do you think it’s right to go and come back whenever you want? You toss me around and expect me to be in the same position when you return?”
“That’s not true.”
“Then where were you?”
“I was…”
“Oh, you were busy frolicking around with other women, or trying to make yourself an heir because I couldn’t take care of ours?” Elaine yelled. She knew that she was overreacting but she couldn’t stop herself. Her anger issues were something that she hated most about herself. “You’re unbelievable. Here I was thinking that I bagged myself a husband different from the rest but it turns out that you’re the same as the other men who are cheaters. What sane man goes away from his wife for three days without a word? Just return to wherever you’re coming from.”
