Returning To Work

And so, she kept on smashing, imagining that whatever she was smashing was the head of her father. She smashed and smashed until there was nothing else to smash. Finally, she stopped and stared at her handwork, and for the first time since she lost her baby, Elaine let out a genuine smile.

The smile stretched on her lips with each passing second that she spent staring at the broken glasses.

“That’s not all, girly. Come this way.” Beth offered Elaine her side of the Rage room. She watched as Elaine wasted no time
In stroding to her side and beginning he smashed on the glasses.

Elaine’s heart filled with even more rage as she hit every piece of furniture in the room. It was enough. None of it was enough to cool the rage that she now felt in her heart. She needed to see red, she needed to see blood. Blood for blood. If there was anything she wanted right at the moment, it was revenge for the baby she failed to protect. She wanted blood for blood.

Her hits on the table became harsher, she used whatever strength she had in her and smashed down on it, the table crumbling to the floor at the first strike that she released.

“It’s enough, Elaine. It’s enough.” Beth got to her and grabbed the mallet from her hand, holding her in place. “You’re doing this too hard. It’s not good for your health yet.”

Elaine shook her head. “I’m not done. There are still things that need to be taken care of. I need to smash them all.”

“It’s enough. Let’s leave already.”

“Beth,” she refused, her hand coming to hold on to the mallet in Beth’s hand but the grip on it was too strong for her.

“I would let you be if you’re not in this condition. You’re not in perfect health. I only brought you here to take out some of the rage that you feel not to exert all your energy here.

Reluctantly, she listened to Beth and took off her hand glove and helmet. Once they got outside the rage room, they both pulled away the protective suits and handed them back to the men at the door.

“Thanks for bringing me here,” Elaine muttered once they stepped out of the premises, making their way along the amusement park. “It was relieving.”

“See? I told you, didn’t I? You just have to come out and everything will be fine. Once you’re fine, we’ll come here again to make sure that you vent all your pent-up anger.”

“I would love to come here again.” If Beth had not stopped her from smashing the remaining things in the rage room, she would have smashed everything until she was satisfied. Now that she thought about it, why hadn’t she thought of it sooner?

“That’s great. Do you want to like, walk around and grab ice cream? I heard that they make the perfect ice cream here.”

“So they? But I’m not…”

“You’re never in the mood until you try, girl. We are on a mission to bring you out of your shell and this is the only way to accomplish that. Come with me.”

Before Elaine could say a word or try to reject her friend’s offer to walk her around, Beth dragged her forward with her hand around her wrist and led her to the fun places where the kids and other people had fun.

As they walked past the roller coaster and other children's games, Elaine couldn’t help but feel the tightness of their chest. The laughter of the children and their cute smiles filled her head and she wished she could travel back in time and stop the unfortunate incident from happening.

She’d anticipated her baby’s voice for so long. She’d imagined her laughter, her cries, and her first word. Whether she would call dada or mama first, Elaine had imagined it all. But now that there was nothing else to imagine, she felt how empty she was.

Finally, they got to the ice cream shop, standing in the queue of people who were also waiting, eager to purchase ice cream from the renowned ice cream shop. It eventually got to Beth’s turn and she grabbed two flavors of ice cream and returned back to Elaine.

“Here. I brought you your favorite flavor.”

Elaine sniffled the scent of the ice cream, her eyes glistening as she stared at it. Caramel flavor is one of the best ice cream flavors in the entire world.

“Thank you.”

“Anything for you, bestie. Let’s go. We still have a lot to catch up on.”

Side by side, they turned away from the ice cream shop and began making their way to the place where their car was parked.

All of a sudden, Elaine felt a soft force crash into her, wrapping itself around her body. Slowly, she brought her head downward to look at the cute little girl who’d just rushed into her. The child had her hair tied in a tight bun as she stared upward at Elaine. “Auntie, Auntie. Please help me.”

“Wh..what happened, honey? What do you need help for?”

“I want my Mommy.”

Elaine frowned. “Where is your Mommy? Did you linger away from her?”

“Mommy was standing here.” The child began demonstrating with her hand. “I was standing here and all of a sudden disappeared.”

“Garbi?”

Their eyes raised at the loud call from the other side of the playground to meet with a slightly older woman making her way toward the. Once she got to them, she snatched her daughter and bowed her head a bit. “Thank You so much for looking after my daughter. We’ll leave now.” With her hands around her daughter, the woman made her way out of Elaine's side.

Once they got out of sight, a single thought ran through Elaine’s mouth. Turning to Beth, she announced. “I’ll be returning to work from now on. Good idea, right?”
