You Can Fool Everyone Else But Me
“I’ve made this time and time again. No peanuts in food when we’re around and you fucking knew that.”
Elaine gasped, her eyes darting to the cake on her plate, clearly recognizing it as a peanut cake. Didn’t everyone in the Romano family know that she was allergic to peanuts? Plus she was pregnant. If Xavier hadn’t stopped her from taking the cake and she ended up eating the cake and getting a reaction, it might’ve affected her baby.
Realizing the danger around the situation, she averted her gaze to Margaret, awaiting an explanation.
Helen looked at everyone in confusion. “Why can’t peanuts be added to food here?”
Mrs Romano clutched her palm on the table and answered in a hushed tone. “Elaine is allergic to peanuts.”
She rolled her eyes. “It’s not everyone’s fault that she’s allergic to peanuts. We all like peanuts. You can’t stop them from cooking with something if….”
One glare, just a glare from Xavier and she clamped her mouth shut, straightening in her chair and deciding to watch the drama instead of putting her nose where it did not belong. After all, she wasn’t a Romano.
Margaret slowly stood up from the chair, meeting Xavier’s glare. “Helen is right. Everyone else liked peanuts. We all enjoy it. Besides, it’s been so long since I cooked here, I didn’t remember such little detail.”
Xavier sprang up from the chair, everyone doing the same at the impending danger that threatened to erupt from him. “Little detail? You call this little detail.”
“I didn’t remember her allergy.”
“That wouldn’t be what you’d be saying if she’d eaten of this cake of yours and got harmed.”
“It’s a mistake, I didn’t mean to have her eat peanuts.”
“Or you’re trying to harm my child,” he spat. Xavier looked at his mother. “I told you, mother. She’ll never change. You know how she is, she won’t back down until I force her to. I warned you not to do anything rash but you didn’t listen.”
Anger washed over Xavier as he yelled at his sister. He’d warned her to pull one of those tricks of hers, he’d fucking warned but she chose to listen to her goddamn head instead and plotted to harm his child. He knew he was a threat to her and her son and they might never back down until one of them gets ruined.
He rounded the table, coming to stand before Margaret. Before she could think of another excuse to sprout, he grabbed her arms, pulling her toward the door.
“It’s high time you get thrown out of the house forever.”
Everyone ran to them. Elaine immediately got to Xavier’s hand clutching his arms while trying to pull him away from his sister.
“Mother, see what he’s doing to me,” Margaret cried trying to pry herself from Xavier’s hold.
“Xavier, we can fix this, let go of her.”
“Y’all get out my way.”
“Xavier, let go of her, you’re going to hurt her,” Elaine persuaded.
Finally, his hands slipped from her hold and she quickly rushed to her mother’s side, pulling her into a hug and crying on her shoulders. “Mother, I didn’t really mean to do that. Xavier always acts like this, he never liked me.”
Xavier let out a short laugh. “Don’t try to pull the pity card now. I never started this feud between the both of us.” She never cared about anything else other than to be at the top, to get where she wanted to be through selfish means.
“That’s the truth, everyone knows it. You’re just using this as an excuse to get back at me. I even asked him for his forgiveness but he’d been harboring hatred in his heart. Mother, you see that?”
“Stop trying to manipulate her. You’re a grown-ass woman so behave like one. I fucking know you, Margaret. You can fool everyone else here but me.”
“What’s going on here?” Everyone’s gaze met with Mr Romano who stepped into the hall, his eyes darting from his wife to his children, trying to find the answers to his question. Margaret ran to him, hugging his arms to herself.
“It’s Xavier. I volunteered to be in charge of dinner today and forgot that Elaine is allergic to peanuts. He thinks I put peanuts in the cake on purpose.”
“Like you didn’t.”
“Enough. You’ll all take your seats. Come with me, Xavier, we’ll talk about this in private.”
Casting Margaret a last look, he glared at her before stepping out of the room with his father. Once they got out of sight, Mrs. Romano helped Margaret to the chair.
“It’s all your fault that dinner was ruined.” Elaine turned when she heard a voice behind her, her eyes almost rolling to the back of her head at the sight of the person behind her.
“Helen.”
“Yeah. You tend to make things all about you, don’t you?” Using your pregnancy to get his attention is a pathetic act, do you know?”
“Do tell me more since you seem to be a master of the act.”
Helen gritted her teeth.
“We’ll, I hope my Xavier finally realizes the kind of woman you are and throws you out in the street soon. Someone like you doesn’t deserve him one bit. All you want is money.”
Elaine raised a brow. Money? If there was anyone who was a gold digger between them, it should be Helen. She didn’t even have any source of income except her parents. While at school, Elaine was already making a living from her fashion designing.
“And you? What do you want?”
“Him and trust me, I’ll get him.”
“You both, stop whatever argument you’re making and come sit down. Elaine, come on,” Mrs Romano ordered. Helen quickly broke into a smile and returned to her chair, reassuring the woman that they were simply just talking and not arguing.
Before she could take a step to return to her chair, Xavier walked into the hall and grabbed her wrist. Mrs Romano stood up once he began leading her out.
“Where are you going? What’s wrong.”
“We’re leaving.”
