My Own Way

“Huh? Why is everyone gathered here?” Ria asked as she got led into the room by a servant. Behind her was Jimmy who had a drink in his hand. He raised a brow as he assessed the situation before him with Ria, their eyes looking from one member of the family to another. “Did something happen?”

Ria’s eyes widened as they fell on the dress on the floor, a gasp escaping her lips. She bunched the side of her dress and realized she might have been caught, he brought a hand to the back of her neck and faked a laugh. “Oh my, it’s such a shame that the dress didn’t last long. I was admiring it. What’s wrong? Why is it on the floor in pieces? Is anyone going to say anything?”

Jimmy stepped up beside her. “Too bad, the dress didn’t even last up to a day. Such a waste.”

Mrs Romano’s eyes burned in anger and before anyone could stop her, she headed toward Ria and raised her hand. Her palm descended on Ria’s cheek, sending her to the floor in a thump. “You jinx!” She roared. “How dare you try to harm my daughter-in-law. Do you have a death wish?”

Ria held her cheek in her palm in shock as she raised her head to stare at the woman who had struck her before darting her eyes to the rest of the people in the room. She looked at Emily, waiting for her to step forward, and then at her mother-in-law. When no one stepped forward to speak for her, she gritted her teeth and fired. “What the hell? How did I try to harm her?”

“You’ll keep quiet and hear me speak or else, I’ll break your bones into tiny dirty pieces.”

“I’m pregnant. You have to be gentle,” she pointed at her protruded tummy. “Do you want to harm my baby? It’s your great-grandbaby.”

Mrs Romano stepped forward to strike the girl again but Jimmy swooped between them, stretching his hands forward to block her path from Ria’s. “Please calm down, grandmother. We’re trying to process the situation here. What did my wife do?”

“Why don’t you ask her yourself? Go ahead and ask this scheming woman. I won’t condone a lousy attitude in my home just because she’s pregnant. She’ll pay for this.”

Jimmy nodded and looked behind him. He asked. “Honey, what did you do?”

Letting out a scoff of disbelief, Ria managed to stand up from the floor. “That is all you can ask me? She struck me. You should be scolding her for hitting your pregnant wife.”

“Since she’s going to continue being a bitch, I’ll say. This girl here, put a fire reactor in Elaine’s dress.”

Jimmy and Ria’s eyes grew wide, one in disbelief and the other in fear. Ria stumbled backward, her eyes refusing to stare at anyone at the shame that she was caught red-handed.

“That is not true. My wife would never stoop so low.”

“Why don’t you ask her.”

Ria’s heartbeat increased rapidly. Her fingers clenched into a fist and she pushed a strand of hair behind her ears before replying. “Th…that is a lie. Elaine is…she’s trying to frame me. That’s all she always does. I wasn’t the one who brought her the dress.”

“It was Emily and Emily here says that you asked her to bring the dress to Elaine. Right, Emily?”

Emily swallowed as she stepped to where the women stood. “You’re right.” Looking over to Ria, she spoke. “Tell them how the dress got to your possession, Ria. We have to trace the real culprit.” But Ria looked away, her heels clicking with the floor. “It, don’t tell me that you did it.” Her eyes widened immediately.

Ria snapped. “Just stop it already. Stop!!” She clutched her hair in both her hands. “Mother,” she yelled at Margaret. “You’re not going to say anything? You’re going to watch them treat me so badly? I’m carrying your grandbaby.”

“That is your cup of tea to drink,” Margaret walked up to the dress on the floor. She gathered it in her hand and threw it at Ria. “Why didn’t you fucking come to me before acting rashly? This…. Is beyond my power. You’re going to take whatever punishment you’re given. And stop denying it already. You should be pleading on your two knees.” Although she wasn’t a fan of Elaine, she still wasn’t going to step up for anyone who crossed Xavier’s path. They should’ve known not to cross his path and Ria here was a huge problem.

“Enough.” Just a word from Xavier caused them all to freeze and stepped aside as he began making his way toward them. Once he got to them, he looked at his men who already surrounded Ria and two burly men stepped forward and grabbed Ria’s arms.
“I gave you enough time to speak. It’s over now so I’ll do it my way so that the next time you think of harming a member of this family, you’ll think twice.”

Ria’s legs trembled, shivers running down her spine. She knew what kind of monster Xavier Romano was and how he could wipe her off the face of the earth with just a snap of his fingers. Her entire body shook at the look in his head that promised something dangerous and harmful.

“Wh…what are you go…going to do to me?” Her words were shaky.

“Something you’ll remember even in your next life.”

“Uncle,” Jimmy stepped up beside Xavier, his head lowered in a bow. “Please uncle, forgive my wife for her crime. I’ll do anything. She’s carrying my child.”

“And who gives a fuck about your pathetic sperm? I warned you to make sure this banshee of a wife never crosses my path.”

“It’s my fault. Please punish me instead. Do not harm my baby.”

Just as the men began to pull Ria out of the room regardless of hers and Jimmy’s cries, Mrs Romano ran to Xavier and grabbed his arms. “Calm down, son. It shouldn’t be up to this.” There was a child involved. “For the sake of the child, we should let the police handle this, okay? We should just call the police instead.”
