The Reunion
“It’s fine, Emily. I understand you. Ria had brainwashed everyone.”
“I was so stupid,” Emily cried. “She came to me that day that you had bullied her for so long. Even though I knew you would never do such a thing, I let her deceive me. It was all my fault for not realizing it sooner. Ria is truly someone else.”
“Emily, you’re making this so emotional. It’s in the past now. All that matters is that she’s been found out and everything will fall back in place now.”
“I’m so sorry.”
To relieve Emily, she stepped forward and embraced her, letting her place her head on her shoulder while she patted her back. “You can stop feeling so much guilt now. It feels good to be in your embrace again after so long.”
“It feels so good. I missed us.”
“I missed us too.”
Bianca stepped toward them just in time for them to break away from each other. She smiled at her daughters and began. “I’m sorry also, Elaine. If you’d find it in your heart to forgive me, I’d be most grateful. We had been fully blinded by Ria and it pains me to see my daughter as a complete opposite of what I raised her to be.”
Elaine angled her body so that she was facing directly at her mother and with an excited grin, she pulled her into her embrace. How nice was it to have her family again? How nice was it to have people who love and trust her? At least, she could sleep peacefully at night knowing so well that her family was right behind her again.
“Mother, it’s fine. I’m just so happy that we’re back together again. If we want to be so strong, we should learn to trust each other. And about Ria, we haven’t lost her. She’s our family and we will do whatever it takes to bring Ria back to her senses.” Family was family, after all. Ria was her very own sister.
Finally, the mother and daughter broke the embrace but their hands remained circled on each other’s waist.
“And about father,” Emily brought in a different topic. “I didn’t mean what we said the other day about you being the cause of…of father leaving us while we were young. I know I shouldn’t have said that. Father…father left because he didn’t want us anymore. Right now, if I see him after what he did to you, I’ll strangle him myself.”
Elaine couldn’t help the tears that broke out from her at the mention of her father. She brought her hands to her eyes and tried to push her tears backward as the memories came flooding into her head. Emily was right. If she sees the man ever again, she will make sure to strangle him to death this time. She would do anything to avenge her child.
“Enough tears and memories. We should eat lunch together and you know, catch up with a few things,” Emily suggested. “Come on with me to the kitchen. Mother made your favorite cookie. It’s as if she knew you’d come.” She pulled Elaine, guiding her to the kitchen. From behind them, Bianca admitted.
“Something in me told me that my daughter showed up today. I just had to do it according to my instincts.”
Just like Emily said, as they walked into the kitchen, her nose was filled with the scent of the most milky and delicious cookie that she knew of. One made by her mother single-handedly. She walked to the plate of cookies on the island table and squealed excitedly.
“It’s a lot, Mum. Did you plan a feast?”
“You can take some home. I’m sure your husband is going to like them.”
Her lips twitched. “Xavier doesn’t eat sweets. But not to worry, I’ll take them home for myself. I missed the taste of your cookies.” She waited for no one to tell her before she sat on the chair and took a cop lie in between her fingers, brought it to her lips, and took a bite, crushing it with her teeth as the taste washed over her mouth. She moaned in satisfaction.
“Mother surely has magic in her hands.”
Emily shook her head and placed a cup of tea before her. “This tea, Mother told me that she got it directly from Japan. I still can’t understand her obsession with this tea, you know. Have some.”
Bianca and Emily took their seats beside Elaine and together they ate the cookie and drank from the mug of tea before them. Elaine’s lips stretched into a smile. She wished that things remain like this and that nothing comes between the bond that she finally created again with her sister and mother. All that needed to complete their family at the moment was Ria. They needed to get their sister back on track with life again. And somehow, they all knew that discipline or words wouldn’t work on the girl. They needed to find a better way.
“Mrs Romano.” Elaine’s head whipped behind her to stare at the servant who had just walked into the kitchen, her head lowered while awaiting her reply.
“Speak, please.”
“Your assistant is here. May I escort her in?”
“Beth?” Her face lit up. “Sure, escort her in.”
A few minutes after the servant walked out of the kitchen, Beth slowly made her way in, her eyes tracing from Bianca to Emily before finally settling on Elaine. She raised a brow. “Did I miss something here? Mrs Rock, Miss Emily.”
Bianca shook her head. “Don’t call me that anymore. I changed my name already.”
“What?”
“I can’t keep answering the name of the man who hurt my daughter. Besides, our marriage ended when he left us to fend for himself. Even though we never had a divorce, I’ve decided to change my name back to my maiden name. I’m also planning on moving out of this mansion. I got mine.”
Everyone’s mouths fell open in disbelief. They stared at the woman like she’d grown ten heads. It was the same woman that had refused to change her name previously even after many years since her husband left. What changed?
